    "text": "## CHAPTER XII.\n\nBuilding a Kosmos.\n\nIt is not possible, at our present stage of evolu-\ntion, to do more than roughly indicate a few points\nin the vast outline of the kosmic scheme in which\nour globe plays its little part. By \" a kosmos\" is\nhere meant a system which seems, from our stand-\npoint, to be complete in itself, arising from a single\nLogos, and sustained by His Life. Such a system\nis our solar system, and the physical sun may be\nconsidered to be the lowest manifestation of the\nLogos when acting as the centre of His kosmos;\nevery form is indeed one of His concrete manifesta-\ntions, but the sun is His lowest manifestation as the\nlife-giving, invigorating, all-pervading, all-control-\nling, regulative, co-ordinating, central power.\n\nSays an occult commentary: Sftrya (the sun),\n\nin its visible reflection, exhibits the first or lowest state of\nthe seventh, the highest state of the universal Presence, the\npure of the pure, the first manifested Breath of the ever un-\nmanlfested Sat (Be-ness). All the central physical or objec-\ntive Suns are in their substance the lowest state of the first\nPrinciple of the Breath,*\n\nare, in short, the lowest state of the \" Physical Body\"\nof the Logos.\n\nAll physical forces and energies are but transmu-\ntations of the life poured forth by the sun, the Lord\n\n* Secret Doctrine ^ i. . p. 309.\n\nTHE ANCIENT WISDOM,\n\nand Giver of life to his system. Hence in many\nancient religions the sun has stood as the syrabol of\nthe Supreme God — the symbol, in truth, the least:\nliable to misconstruction by the ignorant.\nMr. Sinnett well says:\n\nThe solar system k indeed an area o£ Nature includingmoro\nthan any but the very highest beings whom our humanity is\ncapable of developing are in a position to investigate. The-\noretically we may feel sure — as we look up into the heavens\nat night--that the whole solar system itself is but a drop in\nthe ocean ot the kosraos, but that drop is in its turn an ocean\nfrom the point of view of the consciousness of such half-\ndeveloped beings within it as ourselves, and we can only bope\nat present to acquire vague and shadowy conceptions of its\norigin and constitution. Shadowy, however, though these\nmay be, they enable ua to assign the subordinate planetary\nseries in which our own evolution is carried on, to its proper\nplace in the system of which it is a part, or at all events to\nget a broad idea f the relative magnitude of the whole sys-\ntem, of our planetary chain, of the world in which we are at\npresent functioning, and of the respective periods «E evolution\nin which as human beings we are interested.*\n\nFor in truth we cannot grasp our own position in-\ntellectually without some idea — however vague it\nmay be — of our relation to the whole; and while\nsome students are content to work within their own\nsphere of duty and to leave the wider reaches of life\nuntil they are called to function in them, others feel\nthe need of a far-reaching scheme in which they\nhave their place, and take an intellectual delight in\nsoaring upwards to obtain a bird's-eye view of the\nwhole lield of evolution. This need has been recog-\n■ The System to -which -we belong, p. 4,\n\nnized and met by the spiritual Guardians of human-\nity in the magnificent delineation of the kosmos\nfrom the standpoint of the occultist traced by their\npupil and messenger, H. P. Blavatsky, in the Secret\nDoctrine^ a work that will become ever more and\nmore enlightening as students of the Ancient Wis-\ndom themselves explore and master the lower levels\nof our evolving world.\n\nThe appearance of the Logos, we are told, is the\nherald of the birth-hour of our kosmos.\n\nWhen He is manifest, all is manifested after Him ; by His\nmanifestation this All becomes manifest. *\n\nWith Himself He brings the fruits of a past kos-\nmos — ^the mighty spiritual Intelligences who are to\nbe His co-workers and agents in the universe now to\nbe built. Highest of these are \"the Seven,\" often\nThemselves spoken of as Logoi, since each in His\nplace is the centre of a distinct department in the\nkosmos, as the Logos is the centre of the whole.\nThe commentary before quoted says:\n\nThe seven Beings in the Sun are the Seven Holy Ones. Self-\nbom from the inherent power in ^he matrix of Mother-sub-\nntance. . . . The energy from which they sprang into con-\nscious existence in every Sun is what some people call Vishnu,\nwhich is the Breath of the Absoluteness. We call it the one\nmanifested Life— itself a reflection of the Absolute.\n\nThis \"one manifested Life\" is the Logos, the\nmanifested Grod.\n\nFrom this primary division our Kosmos takes itr.\n/^venfold character, and all subsequent divisions in\n\n^ Mundakopanishad^ IL ii. lo.\n\n314 THE ANCIENT WISDOM.\n\ntheir descending order reproduce this seven-keyed\nscale. Under each of the seven secondary Logoi\ncome the descending hierarchies o£ Intelligences\nthat form the governing body of His kingdom:\namong These we hear of the Lipika, who are the\nRecorders of the karma of that kingdom and of all\nentities therein ; of the Maharajas or Devarajas, who\nsuperintend the working out of karmic law ; and of\nthe vast hosts of the Builders, who shape and fash-\nion all forms after the Idea^ that dwell in the\ntreasure-house of the Logos, in the Universal Mind,\nand that pass from Him to the Seven, each of whom\nplans out His own realm under that supreme direc-\ntion and all-inspiring life, giving to it, at the same\ntime, His own individual coloring. H, P. Blavatsky\ncalls these Seven Realms that make up the solar\nsystem the seven Laya centres; she says:\n\nThe sevea Laya centres are the seven Zero points, using the\nterm Zero ia tbe same sense that chemists do, to indicate a\npoint at which, is Esotericism, the scale of reckoning of dif-\nferentiation begins. From the Centres — bej'oad which Esoteric\nphilosophy allows us to perceive the dim metaphysical outlines\nof the \"Seven Sons\" of Life, and Light the seven Logoi of the\nHermetic and all other philosophies— begins the differentiation\nof the elements which enter into the constitution of our Solar\n\nThis realm isaplanetary evolution of astupendous\ncharacter, the field in which are lived out the stages\nof a life of which a physical planet, such as Venus,\nis but a transient embodiment. We may speak of\nthe Evolver and Ruler of this realm as a planetary\n'Secret Doctrine, i., p. i6a.\n\nTHE SEVEN GLOBES. 31$\n\nLogos, SO as to avoid confusion. He draws from\nthe matter of the solar system, outpoured from the\ncentral Logos Himself, the crude materials He re-\nquires, and elaborates them by His own life-energies,\neach planetary Logos thus specializing the matter of\nHis realm from a common stock. \"* The atomic state\nin each of the seven planes of His kingdom being\nidentical with the matter of a sub-plane of the whole\nsolar system, continuity is thus established through-\nout the whole. As H. P. Blavatsky remarks, atoms\nchange \"their combining equivalents on every\nplanet,'* the atoms themselves being identical, but\ntheir combinations differing. She goes on:\n\nNot alone the elements of our planet, bot even tboM of all\nits jdsters in the solar system, differ as widely from each other\nin their combinations, as from the cosmic elements beyond otsr\nsolar limits. • • • Each atom has seven planes of being, or\nexistence, we are taught, f\n\n— ^the sub-planes, as we have been calling them, of\neach great plane.\n\nOn the three lower planes of His evolving realm\nthe planetary Logos establishes seven globes or\nworlds^ which for convenience sake, following the\nreceived nomenclature, we will call globes A, B^ C^\nD, B. F» 6. These are the\n\nSeteft soiall wheels ferolvisg* one gsriog birth to the c^m^^\n^oken of in Stanza vL of the Baoi of Dzyan:\n\nHe biildstiieiii in die Ukeoeasof old^ wheeK phKt^g thMi\nctt the II iipsfijiiabie ceottes*\n\nm OuKgUt L^ OD ''The Pbysscal Pkne/\nB the evelfrfMi eC natter.\n\\Secrei Doctrhu^ i^ pp. 166 jouSl 174.\n\n3i6 tHE Ancient wtsDoM.\n\nImperishable, since each wheel not only gives\nbirth to its successor, but is also itself reincarnated\nat the same centre, as we shall see.\n\nThese globes may be figured as disposed in three\npairs on the arc of an ellipse, with the middle globe\nat the midmost and lowest point; for the most part\nglobes A and G — the first and seventh — are on the\narupa levels of the mental plane ; globes B and F —\nthe second and sixth — are on the rupa levels; globes\nC and E — the third and fifth — are on the astral plane ;\nglobe D — the fourth — is on the physical plane.\nThese globes are spoken of by H. P. Blavatsky as\n\" graduated on the four lower planes of the world of\nformation,\" * i,e.^ the physical and astral planes, and\nthe two subdivisions of the mental (rupa and arfipa).\nThey may be figured: f\n\narUpa V -^ ) ( ^ ) archetypal\n\nH\\pa V ® y C ^ y\n\ncreative or\nintellectual\n\n0©\n\nastral I C 1 f £ ) formative\n\nphysical ( 1^ J physical\n\n* Secret Doctrine^ i., p. 176.\n\nf See p. 221 of the Secret Doctrine ; the note is important,\nthat the archetypal world is not the world as it existed in the\n\nTHE PLANETAi<V CHAIN. 317\n\nThis is the t)rpical arrangement, but it is modified\nat certain stages of evolution. These seven globes\nform a planetary ring or chain, and — if for a mo-\nment we regard the planetary chain as a whole, as,\nso to say, an entity, a planetary life or individual —\nthat chain passes through seven distinct stages in its\nevolution; the seven globes as a whole form its\nplanetary body, and this planetary body disinte-\ngrates and is re-formed seven times during the plan-\netary life. The planetary chain has seven incarna-\ntions, and the results obtained in one are handed on\nto the next.\n\nEvery such chain of worlds is the progeny and creation of\nanother lower and dead chain — its reincarnation, so to say.*\n\nThese seven incarnations f make up \" the planetary\n\nevolution,\" the realm of a planetary Logos. As\n\nthere are seven planetary Logoi, it will be seen that\n\nseven of these planetary evolutions, each distinct\n\nfrom the others, make up the solar system. J In an\n\noccult commentary this coming forth of the seven\n\nLogoi from the one, and of the seven successive\n\nchains of seven globes each, is described:\n\nFrom one light seven lights ; from each of the seven, seven\ntimes seven. §\n\nTaking up the incarnations of the chain, the man\n\nmind of the planetary Logos, but the first model which was\nmade.\n\n* Secret Doctrine ^ i.. p 176.\n\nI* Technically called \"manvantaras.\"\n\n}Mr. Sinnett calls these ** seven schemes of evolution.**\n\n§ Seeret Doctrine^ i., p. 147 -\n\n3l8 THE ANCIENT WISDOM.\n\nvantaras, we learn that these also are subdivisible\ninto seven stages ; a wave of life from the planetary\nLogos is sent round the chain, and seven of these\ngreat life- waves, each one technically spoken of as\n\"a round,\" complete a single manvantara. Each\nglobe has thus seven periods of activity during a\nmanvantara, each in turn becoming the field of\nevolving life.\n\nLooking at a single globe we find that during th«\nperiod of its activity seven root-races of a humanity\nevolve on it, together vnth six other non-human\nkingdoms interdependent on each other. As these\nseven kingdoms contain forms at all stages of evolu-\ntion, as all have higher reaches stretching before\nthem, the evolving forms of one globe pass to an-\nother to carry on their growth when the period of\nactivity of the former globe comes to an end, and go\non from globe to globe to the end of that round;\nthey further pursue their course round after round\nto the close of the seven rounds or manvantaras;\nthey once again climb onward through manvantara\nafter manvantara till the end of the reincarnations\nof their planetary chain is reached, when the results\nof that planetary evolution are gathered up by the\nplanetary Logos. Needless to say that scarcely any-\nthing of this evolution is known to us; only the\nsalient points in the stupendous whole have been\nindicated by the Teachers.\n\nEven when we come to the planetary evolution in\nwhich our own world is a stage, we know nothing\nof the processes through which its seven globes\n\nACTIVITY AND SLEEP. 319\n\nevolved during its first two manvantaras; and of its\nthird manvantara we only know that the globe which\nis now our moon was globe D of that planetary\nchain. This fact, however, may help us to realize\nmore clearly what is meant by these successive rein-\ncarnations of a planetary chain. The seven globes\nwhich formed the lunar chain passed in due course\nthrough their sevenfold evolution; seven times the\nlife- wave, the Breath of the planetary Logos, swept\nround the chain, quickening in turn each globe into\nlife. It is as though that Logos in guiding His\nkingdom turned His attention first to globe A, and\nthereon brought into successive existence the in-\nnumerable forms that in their totality make up a\nworld; when evolution had been carried to a certain\npoint. He turned His attention to globe B, and\nglobe A slowly sank into a peaceful sleep. Thus\nthe life-wave was earned from globe to globe, until\none round of the circle was completed by globe G\nfinishing its evolution; then there succeeded a\nperiod of rest,* during which the external evolution-\nary activity ceased. At the close of this period, ex-\nternal evolution recommenced, starting on its second\nround and beginning as before on globe A. The\nprocess is repeated six times, but when the sev-\nenth, the last round, is reached, there is a change.\nGlobe A, having accomplished its seventh life-\nperiod, gradually disintegrates, and the imperisha-\nble laya centre state supervenes; from that, at the\ndawn of the succeeding manvantara a new globe A\n\n* Technically called a pralaya.\n\n',20 TIIK ANUIliNT WISDOM.\n\nis evolved — like a new body — in which the \" princi-\nples\" of the preceding planet A take up their abode.\nThis phrase is only intended to convey the idea of a\nrelation between globe A of the first manvantara\nand globe A of the second; the nature of that con-\nnection remains hidden.\n\nOf the connection between globe D of the lunar\nmanvantara — our moon — and globe D of the terrene\nmanvantara — our earth — we kaow a little more, and\nMr. Sinnett has given a convenient summary of the\nslender knowledge we possess in The System to\n■which -we belong. He says;\n\nThe Dew earth nebula was developed round a centre bear-\ning pretty much the same relation to the dying planet that tha\ncentres of the earth and moon bear to one another at present.\nBut in the nebulous condition this aggregation of matter occu-\npied an enormously greater volume than the solid matter <A\nthe earth now occupies. It Etretched out in all directions so\nu to include the old planet in its fiery embrace. The temper-\natttre of a new nebula appears to be considerably higher Uian\nany temperatures we are acquainted with, and by this means\nthe old planet was superficially heated afresh in such a man-\nner that all atmosphere, water, and volatili7.able matter upon\nit was brought into tha gaseous cenditiou and so became\namenable to the new centre of attraction set up at the centre of\nthe new nebula. In this way the air and seas of the old planet\nwere drawn over into the constitution of the new one. and thus\nit JB that the moon in its present state is an arid, glaring\nmass, dry and cloudless, no longer habitable, and no longer\nrequired for the habitation of any physical beings. When\nthe present manvantara is nearly over, during the seventh\nround, its disintegration will he completed and the matter\nwhich it still holds together will resolve into meteoric dust,*\n*0p. (it., p, 19.\n\nLUNAR AND SOLAR PITRIS. 32 1\n\nIn the third volume of the Secret Doctrine^ in\nwhich are printed some of the oral teachings given\nby H. P. Blavatsky to her more advanced pupils, it\nis stated:\n\nAt the beginning of the evolution of our globe, the moon\nWAS mnch nearer to the earth, and larger than it is now. It\nhas retreated from ns, and shrank much in size. (The moon\ngave all her principles to the earth.) ... A new moon will\nappear during the seventh round, and our moon will finally\ndisintegrate and disappear.*\n\nEvolution during the lunar manvantara produced\nseven classes of beings, technically called Fathers,\nor Pitris, since it was they who generated the beings\nof the terrene manvantara. These are the Lunar\nPitris of the Secret Doctrine. More developed than\nthese were two other classes — variously called Solar\nPitris, Men, Lower Dhyanis — ^too far advanced to\nenter on the terrene evolution in its early stages,\nbut requiring the aid of later physical conditions\nfor their future growth. The higher of these\ntwo classes consisted of individualized animal-like\nbeings, creatures with embryonic souls, /.^., they\nhad developed the causal body; the second were\napproaching its formation. Ltmar Pitris, the first\nclass, were at the beginning of that approach,\nshowing mentality, while the second and third had\nonly developed the kamic principle. These seven\nclasses of Lunar Pitris were the product the lunar\nchain handed on for further development to the ter-\nrene, the fourth reincarnation of the planetary\n\n*0p> «V.,p. 562.\n\n322 THE ANCIENT WISDOM.\n\nchain. As Monads — with the mental principle pres-\nent in the first, the kamic principle developed in\nthe second and third classes, this germinal in the\nfourth, only approaching the germ stage in the still\nless developed fifth, and imperceptible in the sixth\nand seventh — these entities entered the earth-chain,\nto ensoul the elemental essence and the forms shaped\nby the Builders.*\n\nThe nomenclature adopted by me is that of the.\nSecret Doctrine. In the valuable paper by Mrs. Sin-\nnett and Mr. Scott-Elliot on the Lunar Pitris, H. P.\nB. 'a \"Lower Dhyanis, \" that incarnate in the third\nand fourth rounds, are taken as the first and second\nclasses of Lunar Pitris ; their third class is therefore\nH.P. B.'s first class, tlieir fourth class her second,\nand so on. There is no difference in the statement\nof facts, only in nomenclature, but this difference of\nnomenclature may mislead the student if it be not\nexplained. As I am using H. P. B.'s nomenclature,\nmy fellow-students of the London Lodge and the\nreaders of their \" Transaction\" will need to remem-\nber that my first is their third, and so on sequen-\ntially.\n\nThe \" Builders\" is a name including innumerable'\nIntelligences, hierarchies of beings of graduated\nconsciousness and power, who on each plane carry\nout the actual building of forms. The higher direct\n\n*H. P. Blavatsky. in the Secret Doctrine, does not includo\nthose whom Mrs. Sinnett calls first- aud secoad-clasa Pitris in\nthe \"monads from the lunar chain\" ; she takes them apart as\n\"men,\" as \"DhySn Chohans.\" Compare i., pp. [97, 207.811.\n\nDESCENDING AND ASCENDING. 323\n\nand control, while the lower fashion the materials\nafter the models provided. And now appears the\nuse of the successive globes of the planetary chain.\nGlobe A is the archetypal world, on which are built\nthe models of the forms that are to be elaborated\nduring the round; from the mind of the planetary\nLogos the highest Builders take the archetypal\nIdeas, and guide the Builders on the arupa levels as\nthey fashion the archetypal forms for the round.\nOn globe B these forms are reproduced in varied\nshapes in mental matter by a lower rank of Builders,\nand are evolved slowly along different lines, until\nthey are ready to receive an infiltration of denser\nmatter ; then the Builders in astral matter take up the\ntask, and on globe C fashion astral forms, with details\nmore worked out ; when the forms have been evolved\nas far as the astral conditions permit, the Builders\nof globe D take up the task of form-shaping on the\nphysical plane, and the lowest kinds of matter are\nthus fashioned into appropriate types, and the forms\nreach their densest and most complete condition.\n\nFrom this middle point onwards the nature of the\nevolution somewhat changes ; hitherto the greatest\nattention had been directed to the building of the\nform; on the ascending arc the chief attention is\ndirected to using the form as a vehicle of the evolv-\ning life and on the second half of the evolution on\nglobe D, and on globes E and P the consciousness\nexpresses itself first on the physical and then on the\nastral and lower mental planes through the equiva-\nlents of the forms elaborated on the descending arc.\n\n334 THE ANCIENT WISDOM,\n\nOn the descending arc the Monad impresses itself as\nbest it may fn the evolving forms, and these impres-\nsions appear vaguely as impressions, intuitions, and\nso on; on the ascending arc the Monad expresses\nitself through the forms as their inner ruler,\nglobe G the perfection of the round is reached, the\nMonad inhabiting and using as its vehicles the\narchetypal forms of globe A.\n\nDuring all these stages the Lunar Pitris have\nacted as the souls of the forms, brooding over them,\nlater inhabiting them. It is on the first-class Pitria\nthat the heaviest burden of the work falls during\nthe first three rounds. The second- and third-class\nPitris flow into the forms worked up by the first;\nthe first prepare these forms by ensouling them for\na time and then pass on, leaving them for the ten-\nancy of the second and third classes. By the end of\nthe first round the archetypal forms of the mineral\nworld have been brought down, to be elaborated\nthrough the succeeding rounds, till they reach their\ndensest state in the middle of the fourth round.\n\" Fire\" is the \" element'\" of this first round.\n\nIn the second round the first-class Pitris continue\ntheir human evolution, only touching the lower\nstages as the human fcetus still touches them to-day,\nwhile the second class, at the close of the round,\nhave reached the incipient human stage. The great\nwork of the round is bringing down the archetypal\nforms of vegetable life, which will reach their per-\nfection in the fifth round, \"Air\" is the second\nround \" element\"\n\nARRIVAL OF SOLAR PITRIS. 325\n\nIn the third round the first-class Pitri becomes\ndefinitely human in form; though the body is jelly-\nlike and gigantic, it is yet, on globe D, compact\nenough to begin to stand upright; he is ape-like\nand is covered with hairy bristles. The third-class\nPitris reach the incipient human stage. Second-\nclass solar Pitris make their first appearance on\nglobe D in this round, and take the lead in human\nevolution. The archetypal forms of animals are\nbrought down to be elaborated into perfection by\nthe end of the sixth round, and \" water\" is the char-\nacteristic \"element.\"\n\nThe fourth round, the middle one of the seven\nthat make up the terrene manvantara, is distin-\nguished by bringing to globe A the archetypal forms\nof humanity, this round being as distinctively hu-\nman as its predecessors were respectively animal,\nvegetable, and mineral. Not till the seventh round\nwill these forms be all fully realized by humanity,\nbut the possibilities of the human form are mani-\nfested in archetypes in the fourth. \" Earth\" is the\n\" element\" of this round, the densest, the most ma-\nterial. The first-class solar Pitris may be said to\nhover round globe D more or less in this round dur-\ning its early stageft.of activity, but they do not defi-\nnitely incarnate until after the third great outpour-\ning of life from the planetary Logos in the middle\nof the third race, and then only slowly, the number\nincreasing as the race progresses, and multitudes\nincarnating in the early fourth race.\n\nThe evolution of humanity on our earth, globe D»\n\n326 THE ANCIENT WISDOU.\n\nofEera in a strongly marked form the contioual\nsevenfold diversity already often alluded to. Seven\nraces of men had already shown themselves in the\nthird round, and in the fourth these fundamental\ndivisions became very clear on globe C, where seven\nraces, each with sub-races, evolved. On globe D\nhumanity begins with a First Race — usually called\na Root- Race— at seven different points, \"seven of\nthem, each on his lot.\" * These seven types side by\nside, not successive — make up the first root-race,\nand each again has its own seven sub-races. From\nthe first root-race — jelly-like amorphous creatures —\nevolves the second root-race with forms of more\ndefinite consistency, and from it the third, ape-like\ncreatures that become clumsy gigantic men. In the\nmiddle of the evolution of this third root-race, called\nthe Lemurian, there come to earth — from another\nplanetary chain, that of Venus, much farther ad-\nvanced in its evolution — members of its highly\nevolved humanity, glorious Beings, often spoken of\nas Sons of the Fire, from Their radiant appearance,\na lofty order among the Sons of Mind. | They take\nup Their abode on earth, as the Divine Teachers of\nthe young humanity, some of them acting as chan-\nnels for the third out -pouring and projecting into\nanimal man the spark of monadic life which forms\nthe causal body. Thus the first, second, and third\ns of Lunar Pitris become individualized — the\n\n* Book oj Dxyan. 13. Sacrel Doctrine, ii.\n\\ MSnasaputra. This vast hierarchy of self-\ngenceu em braces many orders.\n\n\\\n\nTHEN COMETH THE END. $2^\n\nvast bulk of humanity. The two classes of solar\nPitris, already individualized — the first ere leaving\nthe lunar chain and the second later — form two low\norders of the Sons of Mind; the second incarnate in\nthe third race at its middle point, and the first come\nin later, for the most part in the fourth race, the\nAtlantean. The fifth, or Aryan race, now leading\nhuman evolution, was evolved from the fifth sub-\nrace of the Atlantean, the most promising families\nbeing segregated in Central Asia, and the new race-\ntype evolved, under the direct superintendence of a\nGreat Being, technically called a Manu.
