They are called \"Gates,\" because, in the East, justice is administered in the city gates.]\n\n_________\n\n[Contains ceremonial laws. It also treats of the institution of the municipal and provincial Sanhedrin, and of the great Bethdin, or Sanhedrin at Jerusalem; whence its name.]\n\n_________\n\n[Treats of corporeal punishments; also, of false witnesses, and of the involuntary homicide, and the cities of refuge.]\n\n_________\n\n[Contains precepts for the administration of oaths.]\n\n\n####### TESTIMONIES.\n\n[Is so called because it consists of laws which tried and trustworthy teachers attested to have been adopted by the elder teachers, in Sanhedrin assembled.]\n\n_________\n\n[Contains laws relating to idolatry, heresy, and the enticers or seducers to either.]\n\n_________\n\n####### ETHICS OF THE FATHERS.\n\n[Contains moral precepts, maxims, and apothegms, of the elder, or Mishnic teachings.]\n\n_________\n\n####### PRECEPTS.\n\n[Treats of such errors in judgment committed by the great Sanhedrin as require a sin-offering.
