    "text": "## Chapter  VIII.\n\nOf  certain  visions. \n\nHe  had  at  this  time  very  many  visions  of \nfuture  and  hidden  things,  and  God  gave  him \nan  experimental  knowledge,  so  far  as  was \npossible,  of  how  things  were  in  heaven,  hell, \nand  purgatory.  It  happened  to  him  com- \nmonly, that  many  souls  appeared  to  him  upon \n\n\nVISIONS.  31 \n\ntheir  leaving  this  world,  and  told  him  how  it \nhad  fared  with  them,  what  sins  were  the  cause \nof  their  purgatory,  how  they  could  be  helped, \nor  what  wasw  their  reward  from  God.  Among \nothers  there  appeared  to  him  the  blessed  Master \nEckart,  and  the  holy  brother  John  der  Fucrer \nof  Strasburg.  The  Master  signified  to  him, \nthat  he  was  in  exceeding  glory,  into  which  his \nsoul  was  quite  transformed,  and  made  godlike \nin  God.  Upon,  this  the  Servitor  besought  him \nto  tell  him  two  things.  The  first  was,  the \nmanner  in  which  those  persons  dwell  in  God, \nwho  with  real  and  genuine  detachment  have \nsought  to  rest  in  the  supreme  Truth  alone? \nTo  this  he  answered,  that  no  words  can  tell  the \nway  in  which  these  persons  are  taken  up  into \nthe  modeless  abyss  of  the  divine  essence.  The \nsecond  thing  was ;  what  exercise  is  most  calcu- \nlated to  help  forward  him,  whose  earnest  desire \nis  to  arrive  at  this  state  ?  The  Master  replied, \nthat  he  must  die  to  himself  by  deep  detach- \nment, receive  every  thing  as  from  God  and  not \nfrom  creatures,  and  establish  himself  in  un- \nruffled patience  towards  all  men,  however  wolf- \nish they  may  be. \n\nThe  other  brother,  John,  also  showed  him \nin   a  vision   the   ravishing   beauty  with  which \n\n\n32  LIFE  OF  BLESSED  HENRY  SITSO. \n\nhis  soul  was  glorified,  and  of  him  too  he  asked \nthe  explanation  of  another  point.  The  ques- \ntion was:  which  among  all  spiritual  exercises \nis  the  most  painful,  and  at  the  same  time  the \nmost  profitable?  The  brother  answered,  that \nthere  is  nothing  more  painful,  and  yet  more \nprofitable  for  a  man,  than,  when  forsaken  by \nGod,  to  go  out  of  himself  by  patience,  and  thus \nto  leave  God  for  God. \n\nThe  Servitor's  own  father,  who  had  led  a \nvery  worldly  life,  appeared  to  him  after  death, \nand  with  a  woful  aspect  showed  him  his  agon- \nising purgatory,  and  the  chief  sins  for  which \nhe  had  incurred  it,  and  explained  to  him  dis- \ntinctly how  he  was  to  help  him.  The  Servitor \ndid  this ;  and  afterwards  his  father  appeared  to \nhim,  and  told  him  that  he  had  been  set  free. \nHis  holy  mother  also,  in  whose  heart  and  body \nGod  worked  many  marvels  in  her  lifetime,  ap- \npeared to  him  in  a  vision,  and  made  known  to \nhim  the  great  reward  which  she  had  received \nfrom  God.  The  like  happened  to  him  in  the \ncase  of  numberless  other  souls;  and  it  was  a \nsource  of  pleasure  to  him,  and  during  a  long \ntime  it  gave  him  instruction  and  support  in  the \ncourse  which  he  was  then  pursuing. \n\n\nHIS  BEHAVIOUR  AT  TABLE.  33",
