"text": "## Chapter XXX.\n\nOf a short interval of rest which God once granted hiin. \n\nGod had accustomed him to this, that as \nsoon as one suffering left him another was \nready at hand to take its place; and in this \nway God played with him unintermittingly. \nOnce only He allowed him an interval of rest ; \nbut it did not last long. \n\nDuring this season of inaction he came to a \nnunnery, and, being asked by his spiritual chil- \ndren how things went with him, he replied : — \nI fear they are going very ill with me at pre- \nsent, and for this reason. It is now four weeks \nsince any one has attacked me in my person \n\n\n134 LIFE OF BLESSED HENRY SUSO. \n\nor my good name, quite unlike what used to \nhappen to me ; so that I fear lest God has for- \ngotten me. Now he had not sat long with \nthem at the grate when there came a brother \nof the Order, who called him out, and said : — \nI was a little while ago at a castle, and the lord \nof it asked after you, where you were, and he \ndid this very savagely. And then he lifted \nup his hands, and swore before every one that \nwherever he found you, he would run a sword \nthrough you. The same thing was also done \nby several fierce soldiers, his kinsmen, and they \nhave been searching for you in different monas- \nteries round about in order to execute their evil \ndesigns upon you. Be warned, therefore, and \ntake care of yourself, as you love your life. \n\nThe Servitor was struck with terror at these \nwords, and said to the brother: — I should be \nvery glad to hear what I have done to de- \nserve the penalty of death. He answered : — \nThe lord of the castle has been told that you \nhave misled his daughter, as well as many \nother persons, into a particular kind of life, to \nwhich the name of spirit is given, and that \nthose who follow it are called spirits; and he \nhas been assured that they are the most aban- \ndoned set on the face of the earth. But more \n\n\nHIS LOVING COMPLAINT TO GOD. 135 \n\nthan this. There was another ferocious man \nthere, who said of you : — He has robbed me of \na dear wife. She draws her veil down now, \nand will no longer look at me. She will only \nlook inwards. He is the cause of this, and he \nshall pay for it. \n\nWhen the Senator heard this tale, he re- \nplied:— Praised be God! and hastening back \nimmediately to the grate, said to his daughters : \n— Be of good cheer, my children. God has \nbeen mindful of me, and has not forgotten me. \nThen he told them the cruel tale, how that men \nwere seeking to return him evil for the good \nthat he had done.",
