The ancient Greeks brought\nit into prominence, and the modern poets have worn it threadbare.\nThe Queen of Night, riding in the majesty of her peerless light\nin heaven, throwing all, even Hesperos, into darkness, and spreading\nher silver mantle over the whole sidereal world, has ever been\na favourite theme with all the poets of Christendom, from Milton\nand Shakespeare down to the latest versifier. But the refulgent\nlamp of night, with her suite of stars unnumbered, spoke only\nto the imagination of the profane. Until lately, Religion and\nScience had nought to do with the beautiful mythos. Yet, the cold\nchaste moon, she, in the words of Shelley --\n\n. . . . \"Who makes all beautiful on which she smiles\n\nThat wandering shrine of soft, yet icy flame,\n\nWhich ever is transformed, yet still the same,\n\nAnd warms, but not illumines.\" . . . .\n\nstands in closer relations to Earth than any other sidereal orb.\nThe Sun is the giver of life to the whole planetary system; the\nMoon is the giver of life to our globe; and the early races understood\nand knew it, even in their infancy. She is the Queen and she is\nthe King, and was King Soma before she became transformed into\nPhoebe and the chaste Diana. She is pre-eminently the deity of\nthe Christians, through the Mosaic and Kabalistic Jews, though\nthe civilized world may have remained ignorant of the fact for\nlong ages; in fact, ever since the\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 387 A GLANCE AT THE LUNAR MYTH.\n\nlast initiated Father of the Church died, carrying with him into\nhis grave the secrets of the pagan temples. For the \"Fathers\"\n-- such as Origen or Clemens Alexandrinus -- the Moon was Jehovah's\nliving symbol: the giver of Life and the giver of Death, the disposer\nof being -- in* our *World. For, if Artemis was *Luna\n*in Heaven, and, with the Greeks, Diana on Earth, who presided\nover child-birth and *life:* with the Egyptians, she was\nHekat (Hecate) in Hell, the goddess of Death, who ruled over magic\nand enchantments. More than this: as the personified moon, whose\nphenomena are triadic, Diana-Hecate-Luna is *the three in one.\n*For she is *Diva triformis*,* tergemina*,*\ntriceps* --* *three heads on one neck,* like Brahma-Vishnu-Siva.\nHence she is the prototype of our Trinity, which has not always\nbeen entirely male. The number seven, so prominent in the Bible,\nso sacred in its seventh (Sabbath) day, came to the Jews from\nAntiquity, deriving its origin from the four-fold number 7 contained\nin the 28 days of the lunar month, each septenary portion thereof\nbeing typified by one quarter of the moon.\n\nIt is worth the trouble of presenting in this work a bird's-eye\nview of the origin and development of the lunar myth and *worship\n*in historical antiquity, on our side of the globe. Its earlier\norigin is untraceable by *exact *science, rejecting as\nit does tradition; while for Theology, which, under the guidance\nof the crafty Popes, has put a brand on every fragment of literature\nthat does not bear the *imprimatur *of the Church of Rome,\nits archaic history is a sealed book. Whether the Egyptian or\nthe Aryan Hindu religious philosophy is the more ancient -- and\nthe Secret Doctrine says it is the latter -- does not much matter\nin this instance, as the lunar and solar \"worship\" are\nthe most ancient in the world. Both have survived, and prevail\nto this day throughout the whole world, with some openly, with\nothers -- *e.g.*,* *in Christian symbolics -- secretly.\nThe cat, a lunar symbol, was sacred to Isis, herself the Moon\nin one sense, as Osiris was the Sun. The cat is often seen on\nthe top of the* Sistrum *in the hand of the goddess. This\nanimal was held in great veneration in the city of Bubaste, which\nwent into deep mourning after the death of every sacred cat, because\nIsis, as the Moon, was particularly worshipped in this city of\nmysteries. The astronomical symbolism connected with it has already\nbeen given in Section I. of \"Symbolism,\" and no one\nhas better described it than Mr. G. Massey, in his Lectures and\nin \"The Natural Genesis.\" The eye of the cat, it is\nsaid, seems to follow the lunar phases in its growth and decline,\nand its orbs shine like two stars in the darkness of night. Hence\nthe mythological allegory which shows Diana hiding under the shape\nof a cat in the Moon, when, in company with other deities, she\nwas seeking to\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The goddess [[*Trimorphos*]] in the statuary of Alcamenes.\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 388 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nescape the pursuit of *Typhon *(*Vide *the* Metamorphoses\nof Ovid*)*. *The moon in Egypt was both the \"Eye\nof Horus\" and the \"Eye of Osiris,\" the Sun.\n\nThe same with the *Cynocephalus. *The dog-headed ape was\na glyph to symbolise the sun and moon, in turn, though the Cynocephalus\n*is more a Hermetic than a religious symbol. *For it is\nthe hieroglyph of Mercury, the planet, as of the Mercury of the\nAlchemical philosophers, \"as,\" say the Alchemists, \"Mercury\nhas to be ever *near Isis*,* as her minister*,*\n*as without Mercury neither Isis nor Osiris can accomplish\nanything in the GREAT WORK.\" Cynocephalus, whenever represented\nwith the Caduceus, the Crescent, or the Lotus, is a glyph of the\n\"philosophical\" Mercury; but when seen with a reed,\nor a roll of parchment, he stands for Hermes, the secretary and\nadviser of Isis, as Hanuman filled the same office with Rama.\n\nThough the regular Sun-Worshippers, the Parsis, are few, yet not\nonly is the bulk of the Hindu mythology and history based upon\nand interblended with these two worships, but so is also the Christian\nreligion itself. From their origin down to our modern day it has\ncoloured the theologies of both the Roman Catholic and Protestant\nChurches. The difference, indeed, between the Aryan Hindu and\nthe Aryan European faiths is very small, if only the fundamental\nideas of both are taken into consideration. Hindus are proud of\ncalling themselves *Suryas *and* Chandravansas *(of\nthe *Solar *and* Lunar *dynasties). The Christians\npretend to regard it as idolatry, and yet they adhere to a religion\nentirely based upon the solar and lunar worships. It is useless\nand vain for the Protestants to exclaim against the Roman Catholics\nfor their \"Mariolatry,\" based on the ancient cult of\nlunar goddesses, when they themselves worship Jehovah, pre-eminently\na *lunar *god, and when both Churches have accepted in\ntheir theologies the \"*Sun*\"-Christ and the lunar\ntrinity.\n\nWhat is known of Chaldaean Moon-Worship, of the Babylonian god,\n*Sin*,* *called by the Greeks \"Deus Lunus,\"\nis very little, and that little is apt to mislead the profane\nstudent who fails to grasp the esoteric significance of the symbols.\nAs popularly known to the ancient profane philosophers and writers\n(for those who were initiated were pledged to silence) the Chaldaea\nwere the worshippers of the moon under *her* (and *his*)\nvarious names, just as were the Jews, who came after them.\n\nIn the unpublished **MSS**. on the Art Speech, already mentioned,\ngiving a key to the formation of the ancient (symbolical) languages\na logical *raison d*'*etre *is brought forward for\nthis double worship. It is written by a wonderfully well-informed\nand acute scholar and Mystic, who gives it in the comprehensive\nform of a hypothesis. The latter, however, becomes forcibly a\nproven fact in the history of religious\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 389 A KEY NOTE TO THE MOON.\n\nevolution in human thought, to anyone who has ever had a glimpse\ninto the secret of ancient Symbology. Thus, he says: --\n\n\"One of the first occupations among men, connected with those\nof actual necessity, would be the perception of time periods,*\nmarked on the vaulted arch of the heavens sprung and rising over\nthe level floor of the horizon, or the plain of still water. These\nwould come to be marked as those of day and night, of the phases\nof the moon, of its stellar or synodic revolutions, and of the\nperiod of the solar year with recurrence of the seasons, and with\nthe application to such periods of the natural measure of day\nor night, or of the day divided into the light and the dark. It\nwould also be discovered that there was a longest and shortest\nsolar day, and two solar days of equal day and night, within the\nperiod of the solar year; and the points in the year of these\ncould be marked with the greatest precision in the starry groups\nof the heavens or the constellations, subject to that retrograde\nmovement thereof, which in time would require a correction by\nintercalation, as was the case in the description of the Flood,\nwhere correction of 150 days was made for a period of 600 years,\nduring which confusion of landmarks had increased. . . . This\nwould naturally come to pass . . . . with all races in all time;\nand such knowledge must be taken to have been inherent in the\nhuman race, prior to what we call the historic period. . . . .\"\n\nOn this basis, the author seeks for some natural physical function\npossessed in common by the human race, and connected with the\nperiodical manifestations, such that \"the connection between\nthe two kinds of phenomena . . . became fixed in popular usage.\"\nHe finds it \"(*a*) in the feminine physiological phenomena\nevery lunar month of 28 days, or\" 4 weeks of 7 days each,\nso that 13 occurrences of the period should happen in 364 days,\nwhich is the solar week year of 52 weeks of 7 days each. (*b*)\nThe quickening of the foetus is marked by a period of 126 days,\nor 18 weeks of 7 days each. (*c*) That period which is called\n\"the period of viability\" is one of 210 days, or 30\nweeks of 7 days each. (*d*) The period of parturition is\naccomplished in 280 days, or a period of 40 weeks of 7 days each,\nor 10 lunar months of 28 days each, or of 9 calendar months of\n31 days each, counting on the royal arch of heavens for the measure\nof the period of traverse from the darkness of the womb to the\nlight and glory of conscious existence, that continuing inscrutable\nmystery and miracle . . . Thus the observed periods of time marking\nthe workings of the birth function would naturally become a basis\nof astronomical calculation . . . We may almost affirm . . . that\nthis was the mode of reckoning among all nations, either independently,\nor intermediately and indirectly by tuition. It was the mode with\nthe Hebrews, for even to-day they calculate the calendar by means\nof the 354 and 355 of the lunar year, and we possess a special\nevidence that it was the mode with the ancient Egyptians, as to\nwhich this is the proof: --\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Ancient Mythology includes ancient Astronomy as well as Astrology.\nThe planets were the hands pointing out, on the dial of our solar\nsystem, the hours of certain periodical events. Thus, Mercury\nwas *the messenger *appointed to keep time during the daily\nsolar and lunar phenomena, and was otherwise connected with the\nGod and Goddess of Light.\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 390 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\n\"The basic idea underlying the religious philosophy of the\nHebrews was that God contained all things within himself*; and\nthat man was his image, man including woman . . . The place of\nthe man and woman with the Hebrews was among the Egyptians occupied\nby the bull and the cow, sacred to Osiris and Isis,** who were\nrepresented, respectively, by a man having a bull's head, and\na woman having the head of a cow, which symbols were worshipped.\nNotoriously Osiris was the Sun and the river Nile, the tropical\nyear of 365 days, which number is the value of the word *Neilos*,*\n*and the bull, as he was also the principle of fire and of\nlife-giving force, while Isis was the Moon, the bed of the river\nNile, or the Mother Earth, for the parturient energies of which\nwater was a necessity, the lunar year of 354-364 days, the time-maker\nof the periods of gestation, and the cow marked by, or with, the\ncrescent new moon.\" . . . .\n\n\"But the use of the cow of the Egyptians for the women of\nthe Hebrews was not intended as of any radical difference of signification,\nbut a concurrence in the teaching intended, and merely as a substitution\nof a symbol of common import, which was this, viz., the period\nof parturition with the cow and the woman was held to be the same,\nor 280 days, or ten lunar months of four weeks each. And in this\nperiod consisted the essential value of this animal symbol, whose\nmark was that of the crescent moon.*** . . . These parturient\nand natural periods are found to have been subjects of symbolism\nall over the world. They were thus used by the Hindus, and are\nfound to be most plainly set forth by the ancient Americans, in\nthe Richardson and Gest tablets, in the Palenque Cross; and manifestly\nlay at the base of the formation of the calendar forms of the\nMayas of Yucatan, the Hindus, the Assyrians, and the ancient Babylonians,\nas well as the Egyptians and old Hebrews. The natural symbols\n. . . would be either the phallus or the phallus and yoni, . .\n. or *male* and* female. *Indeed, the words translated\nby the generalizing terms male and female, in the 27th verse of\nthe 1st chapter of Genesis are . . *. sacr *and* n*'*cabrah*,*\n*or literally, phallus and yoni,**** while the representation\nof the phallic emblems would barely indicate the genital members\nof the human body, when their functions and the development of\nthe seed-vesicles emanating from them was considered; then would\ncome into indication a mode of measures of lunar time, and, through\nlunar, of solar time.\" . . .\n\nThis is the physiological or anthropological key to the Moon symbol.\nThe key that opens the mystery of theogony, or the evolution of\nthe Manvantaric gods, is more complicated, and has nothing phallic\nin it. All is mystical and divine there. But the Jews, beyond\nconnecting Jehovah directly with the Moon as a generative god,\npreferred to ignore the higher hierarchies, and have made of some\nof them (zodiacal constellations and planetary gods) their Patriarchs,\nthus euhemerizing the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* A caricatured and dwarfed Vedantin notion of Parabrahmam containing\nwithin *itself *the whole Universe as being that boundless\nUniverse itself, and *there existing nothing outside of itself.*\n\n** Just as they are to this day in India, the bull of Siva and\nthe cow representing several *Sakti -- *goddesses.\n\n*** Hence the worship of the moon by the Hebrews.\n\n**** \"*Male and female*,* *created he them.\"\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 391 THE TIME PERIODS.\n\npurely theosophical idea and dragging it down to the level of\nsinful humanity. They have ever ignored even the Hebrew secret\ngod of the Kabalists, Ain-Soph, as grand as Parabrahmam in the\nearliest Kabalistic and mystical conceptions. But it is not the\nKabala of Rosenroth that can ever give the true original teachings\nof Simeon-Ben-Iochai, as metaphysical and philosophical as any.\nAnd how many are there among the students of the Kabala who knew\nanything of them except in their distorted Latin translations.\nLet us glance at the idea which led the ancient Jews to adopt\na substitute for the ever **U**NKNOWABLE, and which\nhas misled the Christians into mistaking the substitute for the\nreality.\n\n\"If to these organs (phallus and yoni) as symbols of creative\ncosmic agencies the idea of . . . . time periods can be attached,\nthen, indeed, in the construction of Temples as Dwellings of Deity,\nor of Jehovah, that post designated as the Holy of Holies, or\nthe most High Place, should borrow its title from the recognized\nsacredness of the generative organs, considered as symbols of\nmeasures as well as of creative Cause.\"\n\n\"With the ancient wise, there was no name, and no idea, and\nno symbol, of a First Cause.* With the Hebrews, the indirect conception\nof such was couched in a term of negation of comprehension --\nviz*.*,* Ain-Soph*,* *or the Without Bounds. So in the Kabala this Circle, with its diameter\nline, is the picture of the ten Sephiroth or Emanations, composing\nthe Adam Kadmon, the Archetypal Man, the creative origin of all\nthings. . . . . This idea of connecting the circle and its diameter\nline, that is, number ten, with the signification of the reproductive\norgans, and the Most Holy Place, was carried out constructively\nin the King's Chamber, or Holy of Holies, of the great Pyramid,\nin the Tabernacle of Moses, and in the Holy of Holies of the Temple\nof Solomon. . . . . It is *the picture of a double-womb*,*\n*for in Hebrew the letter he\nis at the same time the number 5 and symbol of the womb, and twice\n5 is 10, or the phallic number.\"\n\nThis \"double womb\" also shows the duality of the idea\ncarried from\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Because it was too sacred. With them, therefore the\nnumber 7 has acquired the most prominent place in their exoteric\nreligion, a cult of external forms and empty rituals; as their\nSabbath, for instance, the seventh day sacred to their deity,\nthe moon, symbolical of the generative Jehovah. While with other\nnations the number seven was typical of theogonic evolution, of\ncycles, cosmic planes, and the Seven Forces and Occult Powers\nin Kosmos, as a boundless whole, whose first upper triangle was\nunreachable to the finite intellect of man -- while other nations,\ntherefore, busied themselves, in their forcible limitation of\nKosmos in Space and Time, only with its septenary manifested plane,\nthe Jews centred this member solely in the moon, and based all\ntheir sacred calculations thereupon. Hence we find the thoughtful\nauthor of the **MSS**. just quoted, remarking, in reference\nto the metrology of the Jews that: \"If 20,612 be multiplied\nby 4/3 *the product will afford a base for the ascertainment\nof the mean revolution of the moon*,* *and if this\nproduct be again multiplied by 4/3, this continued product will\nafford a base for finding the exact period of the mean solar year,\n. . . this form . . . becoming, for the finding of astronomical\nperiods of time, of very great service.\" This double number\n(male and female) is symbolized also in some well-known idols:\n*e.g*., \"Ardanari-Iswara, the Isis of the Hindus,\nEridanus, or Ardan, or the Hebrew Jordan, *or source of descent.\n*She is standing on a lotus-leaf flowing on the water. Yet such adoration, apart from popular Astrolatry and\nHeliolatry, was in no sense *idolatry. *No more, at any\nrate, than the modern Roman Catholic symbolism which connects\ntheir Virgin Mary -- the *Magna Mater *of the Syrians and\nGreeks -- with the Moon.\n\nOf this worship, the most pious Roman Catholics feel quite proud,\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 393 COPIES AND ORIGINALS.\n\nand loudly confess to it. In a *Memoire *to the French\nAcademy, the Marquis De Mirville says: --\n\n\"It is only natural that, as an unconscious prophecy, Ammon-Ra\nshould be *his mother*'*s husband*,* *since the\n*Magna Mater *of the Christians *is precisely the spouse\nof that son she conceives*. . . . It justifies entirely\nwhat Mr. Gerald Massey has said in his Lecture on \"Luniolatry,\nAncient and Modern\": --\n\n\"The man in the moon (Osiris-Sut, Jehovah-Satan, Christ-Judas,\nand other Lunar twins) is often charged with bad conduct. . .\n. In the lunar phenomena the moon was one as *the *moon,\nwhich was two-fold in sex, and three-fold in character -- as mother,\nchild, and adult male. Thus the child of the moon became the consort\nof his own mother! It could not be *helped *if there was\nto be any reproduction. He was compelled to be his own father!\nThese relationships were repudiated by later sociology, and the\nprimitive man in the moon got tabooed. Yet, in its latest, most\ninexplicable phase, this has become the central doctrine of the\ngrossest superstition the world has seen, for these lunar phenomena\nand their humanly represented relationships, the incestuous included,\nare the very foundations of the Christian Trinity in Unity. Through\nignorance of the symbolism, the simple representation of early\ntime has become the most profound religious mystery in modern\nLuniolatry. The Roman Church, without being in any wise ashamed\nof the proof, portrays the Virgin Mary arrayed with the sun, and\nthe horned moon at her feet, holding the lunar infant in her arms\n-- as child and consort of the mother moon. The mother, child,\nand adult male, are fundamental.\"\n\n\"In this way it can be proved that our Christology is mummified\nmythology, and legendary lore, which have been palmed off upon\nus in the* Old* Testament and the New, as divine revelation\nuttered by the very voice of God.\"\n\nA charming allegory is found in the *Zohar*,* *one\nwhich unveils better than anything ever did the true character\nof Jehovah or **YHVH** in the primitive conception of the Hebrew\nKabalists. It is now found in the philosophy of I'bn Gebirol's\nKabbalah, translated by Isaac Myer. \"In the introduction\nwritten by R'Hez'quee-yah, which is very old,\" says our author,\n\"and forms part of our Brody edition of the Zohar (I, 5*b.\nsq.*)* *is* *an account of a journey taken by\nR. This Yah-hovah\nthen or Jehovah, is identical with our Chaos -- Father, Mother,\nSon, -- on the material plane and in the purely physical World.\n*Demon *and* Deus *at* *one and the same\ntime; the sun and moon, good and evil, God and Demon.\n\nLunar magnetism generates life, preserves and destroys it, psychically\nas well as physically. And if, astronomically, she is one of the\nseven planets of the ancient world, in theogony she is one of\nthe regents thereof; with Christians now as much as with Pagans,\nthe former referring to her under the name of one of their archangels,\nand the latter under that of one of their gods.\n\nTherefore the meaning of the \"fairy tale\" translated\nby Chwolson from an old Chaldean **MSS.** translated into Arabic,\nabout Qu-tamy being instructed by the *idol *of the moon,\nis easily understood (*vide* Book III.) I., 21).\n\nBut it is found now that the planets, the Elements, and the Zodiac,\nwere figured not only in Heliopolis by the twelve stones called\n\"mysteries of the elements,\" *elementorum arcana*,*\n*but also in Solomon's temple, and, as pointed out by various\nwriters, in several old Italian churches and even at *Notre\nDame de Paris *where they can be seen to this day.\n\nNo symbol -- the sun included -- was more complex in its manifold\nmeanings than the lunar symbol. The sex was, of course, dual.\nWith some it was male, *e.g*., the Hindu \"King Soma,\"\nand the Chaldean *Sin; *with other nations it was female,\nthe beauteous goddesses Diana-Luna, I'lythia, Lucina. In Tauris,\nhuman victims were sacrificed to Artemis, a form of the lunar\ngoddess; the Cretans called her Dictynna, and the Medes and Persians\nAnaitis, as shown by an inscription of Koloe: '[[*Artemidi\n*'*Anaeiti*]]. But, we are now concerned chiefly with\nthe most chaste and pure of the virgin goddesses, Luna-Artemis,\nto whom Pamphos was the first to give the surname of [[*Kalliste*]],\nand of whom Hippolitus wrote: [[*Kallista polu parthenon*]].\n(See Pausanias viii., 35, 8.) This Artemis-Lochia, the goddess\nthat presided at conception and child-birth (Iliad, Pausanias,\netc., etc.), is, in her functions and as the triple Hecate, the\nOrphic deity, the predecessor of the God of the Rabbins and pre-Christian\nKabalists, and his lunar type. The goddess [[*Trimorphos*]]*\n*was the personified symbol of the various and successive\naspects represented by the moon in each of her three phases; and\nthis interpretation was already that of the Stoics (Cornut. *De\nNat*,* *D. 34, 1), while the Orpheans explained the\nepithet ([[*Trimorphos*]]) by the three kingdoms of nature\nover which she reigned. jealous, blood-thirsty, revengeful and\nexacting, Hecate-Luna is a worthy counterpart of the \"Jealous\nGod\" of the Hebrew prophets.\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 396 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nThe whole riddle of the solar and lunar worship, as now traced\nin the churches, hangs indeed on this world-old mystery of lunar\nphenomena. The correlative forces in the \"Queen of Night,\"\nthat lie latent for modern science, but are fully active to the\nknowledge of Eastern adepts, explain well the thousand and one\nimages under which the moon was represented by the ancients. It\nalso shows how much more profoundly learned in the Selenic mysteries\nwere the ancients than are now our modern astronomers. The whole\nPantheon of the lunar gods and goddesses, Nephtys or Neith, Proserpina,\nMelytta, Cybele, Isis, Astarte, Venus, and Hecate, on the one\nhand, and Apollo, Dionysius, Adonis, Bacchus, Osiris, Atys, Thammuz,\netc., etc., on the other, all show on the face of their names\nand titles -- those of \"Sons\" and \"Husbands\"\nof their mothers -- their identity with the Christian Trinity.\nIn every religious system the gods were made to merge their functions\nas Father, Son, and Husband, into one, and the goddesses were\nidentified as \"Wife, Mother, and Sister\" of the male\nGod; the former synthesizing the human attributes as the \"Sun,\nthe giver of Life,\" the latter merging all the other titles\nin the grand synthesis known as Maia, Maya, Maria, etc., a generic\nname. Maia, in its forced derivation, has come to mean with the\nGreeks, \"mother,\" from the root *ma* (nurse),\nand even gave its name to the month of May, which was sacred to\nall those goddesses before it became consecrated to Mary.* Its\nprimitive meaning, however, was* Maya*,* Durga*,*\n*translated by the Orientalists as \"inaccessible,\"\nbut meaning in truth the \"*unreachable*,\"*\n*in the sense of illusion and unreality; as being the source\nand cause of spells, the personification of **I**LLUSION.\n\nIn religious rites the moon served a dual purpose. Personified\nas a female goddess for exoteric purposes, or as a male god in\nallegory and symbol, in occult philosophy our satellite was regarded\nas a sexless Potency to be well studied, because it was to be\ndreaded. With the initiated Aryans, Khaldii, Greeks and Romans,\nSoma, Sin, Artemis *Soteira *(the hermaphrodite Apollo,\nwhose attribute is the lyre, and the bearded Diana of the bow\nand arrow), *Deus Lunus*,* *and especially Osiris-lunus\nand Thot-lunus,** were the occult potencies of the moon. But whether\nmale or female, whether Thot or Minerva, Soma or Astoreth, the\nMoon is the Occult mystery of mysteries, and more a symbol of\nevil than of good. That the moon was not always reverenced\nis shown in the Mysteries, in which the death of the moon-god\n(the three phases of gradual waning and final disappearance) was\nallegorized by the moon standing for the *genius of evil *that\ntriumphs for the time over the light and life-giving god (the\nsun), and all the skill and learning of the ancient Hierophants\nin Magic was required to turn this triumph into a defeat.\n\nIt was the most ancient worship of all, that of the *third\n*Race of our Round, the Hermaphrodites, to whom the *male*-moon\nbecame sacred, when after the \"Fall\" so-called, the\nsexes had become separated. \"Deus Lunus\" then became\nan androgyne, male and female in turn; to serve finally, for *purposes\nof sorcery*,* *as a dual power, to the *Fourth *Root-race,\nthe Atlanteans. With the *Fifth *(our own) the lunar-solar\nworship divided the nations into two distinct, antagonistic camps.\nIt led to events described aeons later in the Mahabharatan War,\nwhich to the Europeans is the *fabulous*,* *to the\nHindus and Occultists the historical, strife between the *Suryavansas\n*and the *Indovansas. *Originating in the dual aspect\nof the moon, the worship of the female and the male principles\nrespectively, it ended in distinct solar and lunar cults. Among\nthe Semitic races, the sun was for a very long time *feminine\n*and the moon masculine -- the latter notion being adopted\nby them from the Atlantean traditions. The moon was called \"the\nLord of the sun,\" *Bel-Skemesh*,** *before\nthe Shemesh worship. The ignorance of the incipient reasons for\nsuch a distinction, and of occult principles, led the nations\ninto anthropomorphic idol-worship. But the religion of every ancient\nnation had been primarily based upon the Occult manifestations\nof a purely abstract Force or Principle now called \"God.\"\nThe very establishment of such worship shows, in its details and\nrites, that the philosophers who evolved those systems of nature,\nsubjective and objective, possessed profound knowledge, and were\nacquainted with many facts\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* During that period which is absent from the Mosaic books --\nfrom the exile of Eden to the allegorical Flood -- the Jews worshipped\nwith the rest of the Semites *Dayanisi*\n\"the Ruler of Men,\" the \"Judge,\" or the **S**UN.\nThough the Jewish canon and Christianism have made the sun become\nthe \"Lord God\" and Jehovah in the Bible, yet the latter\nis full of indiscreet traces of the androgyne Deity, which was\nJehovah the *sun*, and Astoreth the moon in its female\naspect, and quite free from the present metaphorical element given\nto it. For besides being purely Occult, the rites\nof lunar worship were based, as just shown, upon a knowledge of\nphysiology (quite a modern science with us), psychology, sacred\nmathematics, geometry and metrology, in their right applications\nto symbols and figures, which are but glyphs, recording observed\nnatural and scientific *facts; *in short, upon a most minute\nand profound knowledge of nature. Lunar magnetism generates life,\npreserves and kills it. *Soma *embodies the triple power\nof the *Trimurti*,* *though it passes unrecognized\nby the profane to this day. The allegory that makes Soma, the\nmoon, produced by the churning of the *Ocean of Life *(*Space*)*\n*by the gods in another Manvantara (*i.e.*, in the\n*pre*genetic day of our planetary system), and that other\nallegory, which shows \"the Rishis milking the earth, whose\ncalf was Soma, the moon,\" has a deep cosmographical meaning;\nfor it is neither *our* earth which is milked, nor was\nthe moon, which we know, the calf.* Had our wise men of science\nknown as much of the mysteries of nature as the ancient Aryans\ndid, they would surely never have imagined that the moon was projected\nfrom the Earth. Once more, the oldest of permutations in theogony,\nthe Son becoming his own father and the mother generated by the\nSon, has to be remembered and taken into consideration if the\nsymbolical language of the ancients is to be understood by us.\nOtherwise mythology will be ever haunting the Orientalists as\nsimply \"the disease which springs up at a peculiar stage\nof human culture!\" -- as Renouf gravely observes in a Hibbert\nlecture.\n\nThe ancients taught the, so to speak, *auto*-generation\nof the Gods: the one divine essence, *unmanifested*,*\n*perpetually begetting a second-self,* manifested*,*\n*which second-self, androgynous in its nature, *gives birth\nin an immaculate way *to everything macro- and micro-cosmical\nin this universe. This was shown in the Circle and the Diameter,\nor the Sacred 10, a few pages back.\n\nBut our Orientalists, their extreme desire to discover one homogeneous\n*element *in nature notwithstanding, will *not *see\nit; cramped in their researches by such ignorance, they -- the\nAryanists and Egyptologists -- are constantly led astray from\ntruth in their speculations. Thus, de Rouge is unable to understand,\nin the text which he translates, the meaning of Ammon-Ra saying\nto King Amenophes (supposed to be Memnon), \"Thou art my Son,\nI have begotten thee\"; and as he\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The earth flees for her life in the allegory, before Prithu,\nwho pursues her. She assumes the shape of a cow, and, trembling\nwith terror, runs away and hides even in the regions of Brahma.\nTherefore, it is *not* our Earth. Again, in every Purana,\nthe calf changes name. In one it is Manu Swayambhuva, in another\nIndra, in a third the Himavat (Himalayas) itself, while Meru was\nthe milker. This is a deeper allegory than one thinks.\n\n####### [[Vol. 1, Page]] 399 THE DIGNITY OF SAIS.\n\nfinds the same idea in many a text and under various forms, this\nvery Christian Orientalist is finally compelled to exclaim that\n\"for this idea to have entered the mind of a hierogrammatist,\nthere must have been in their religion a more or less defined\ndoctrine, *indicating as a possible fact that might come to\npass*,* a divine and immaculate incarnation under a human\nform.*\"* *Precisely. But why throw the explanation\non an impossible prophecy, when the whole secret is explained\nby the later religion copying the earlier?\n\nThat doctrine was universal, and it was not the mind of any one\nhierogrammatist that evolved it; for the Indian *avatars *are\na proof to the contrary. After which, having come \"to realize\nclearer\"* what \"the Divine Father and Son\" were\nwith the Egyptians, de Rouge still fails to account for, and perceive\nwhat were the functions attributed to the *feminine *principle\nin that primordial generation. He does not find it in the goddess\nNeith, of Sais. Yet he quotes the sentence of the Commander to\nCambyses when introducing that king into the Saitic temple: \"I\nmade known to his Majesty the dignity of Sais, which is the abode\nof Neith, the great (female) producer, *genitrix *of the\n*Sun*,* *who is the *first-born*,* and\nwho is not begotten*,* but only brought forth*,\"*\n*and hence is the fruit of an *immaculate mother.*\n\nHow much more grandiose, philosophical and poetical is the real\ndistinction -- for whoever is able to understand and appreciate\nit -- made between the *immaculate virgin *of the ancient\nPagans and the modern *Papal* conception. With the former,\nthe ever-youthful mother nature, the antitype of her prototypes,\nthe sun and moon, *generates *and* brings forth *her\n\"mind-born\" son, the Universe. The Sun and Moon, as\nmale-female deities, fructify the earth, the microcosmical mother,\nand the latter conceives and brings forth, in her turn. The more similarity, according to such\nwriters as De Mirville, there exists between the pagan conceptions\nand the Christian dogmas, the more divine appears the Christian\nreligion, and the more is it seen to be the only truly inspired\none, especially in its Roman Catholic form. The unbelieving scientists\nand the academicians who think they see in the Latin Church quite\nthe opposite of divine inspiration, and who will not believe in\nthe satanic tricks of plagiarism by anticipation, are severely\ntaken to task. What would that faithful son of\nRome have said had he heard his co-religionist -- M. Renouf, the\ndistinguished Egyptologist of the British Museum -- declaring,\nin one of his learned lectures, that \"neither Hebrews nor\nGreeks borrowed any of their ideas from Egypt?\"*\n\nBut perhaps it is just this that M. Renouf intended to say namely\n-- that it is the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Aryans, who borrowed\ntheirs from the Latin Church? And if so, why, in the name of logic,\ndo the Papists reject the additional information which the Occultists\nmay give them on Moon-worship, since it all tends to show their\n(the Roman Catholic) worship as old as the world -- OF **S**ABAEANISM\nAND **A**STROLATRY?\n\nThe reason of early Christian and later Roman Catholic astrolatry,\nor the symbolical worship of Sun and Moon -- identical with that\nof the Gnostics, though less philosophical and pure than the \"Sun\nworship\" of the Zoroastrians -- is a natural consequence\nof its birth and origin. The adoption by the Latin Church of such\nsymbols as the water, fire, sun, moon and stars, and a good many\nother things, is simply a continuation by the early Christians\nof the old worship of Pagan nations. Thus Odin got his wisdom,\npower, and knowledge, by sitting at the feet of Mimir, the thrice-wise\n*Jotun*,* *who passed his life by the fountain of\nprimeval Wisdom, the crystalline waters of which increased his\nknowledge daily. Mimir \"drew the highest knowledge from the\nfountain, because the world was born of water; hence primeval\nwisdom was to be found in that mysterious element\" (\"Asgard\nand the Gods,\" 86). The eye which Odin had to pledge to acquire\nthat knowledge may be \"the Sun, which enlightens and penetrates\nall things; his other eye being the moon, whose reflection gazes\nout of the deep, and which at last, when setting, sinks into the\nOcean.\" (*Ibid.*) But it is something more, besides\nthis. Loki, the fire-god, is said to have hidden in the water,\nas well as in the moon, the light-giver, whose reflection he found\ntherein; and this belief that the fire finds refuge in the water\nwas not limited to the old Scandinavians. It was shared by all\nnations and was finally taken up by the early Christians, who\nsymbolized the Holy Ghost under the shape of Fire, \"cloven\ntongues like as fire\" -- the breath of the Father-**S**UN.\nThis \"Fire\" descends also into the Water or the Sea:\n*Mar*,* *Mary. The dove was the symbol of the Soul\nwith several nations, it was sacred to Venus, the goddess born\nfrom the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Quoted in Mr. G. Thot-Hermes\nis said to hide therein, because he is the representative of the\nSecret Wisdom. He is the manifested logos of its light side, the\nconcealed deity or \"Dark Wisdom\" when he is supposed\nto retire to the opposite hemisphere. Speaking of her power, the\nmoon calls herself repeatedly: \"The Light which shineth in\nDarkness,\" the \"Woman-Light.\" Hence it became the\naccepted symbol of all the Virgin-Mother goddesses. As the wicked\n\"evil\" spirits warred against the moon in days of yore,\nso they are supposed to war now, without being able to prevail,\nhowever, against the actual Queen of Heaven, Mary, the moon. Hence\nalso the moon was intimately connected in all the Pagan theogonies\nwith the Dragon, her eternal enemy; the Virgin, or Madonna, standing\non the mythical Satan under that form, crushed and made powerless,\nunder her feet. This, because the head and tail of the Dragon,\nwhich represent in Eastern astronomy to this day the ascending\nand descending nodes of the moon, were also symbolized in ancient\nGreece by the two serpents. Hercules kills them on the day of\nhis birth, and so does the babe in his virgin mother's arms. As\nMr. Gerald Massey aptly observes in this connection: \"All\nsuch symbols figured their own facts from the first, and did not\npre-figure others of a totally different order. The Iconography\n(and dogmas, too) had survived in Rome from a period remotely\npre-Christian. *There was neither forgery nor interpolation\nof types; nothing but a continuity of imagery with a perversion\nof its meaning.*\"\n\n--------------\n\n[[This page continued in next section]]\n\nNext Section\n\nContents",
