(15) They are empty shadows.\n(16) The Creators are perplexed how to create a THINKING man.\n(17) What is needed for the formation of a perfect Man.\n\n14. **T**HE **S**EVEN **H**OSTS,\nTHE \"**W**ILL (*or Mind*)-**B**ORN\"\n**L**ORDS, **P**ROPELLED BY THE **S**PIRIT\nOF **L**IFE-**G**IVING (*Fohat*)*,\n*SEPARATE MEN FROM THEMSELVES, EACH ON HIS OWN **Z**ONE\n(*a*).\n\n(*a*) They threw off their \"shadows\" or *astral\nbodies *-*- *if such an ethereal being as a \"lunar\nSpirit\" may be supposed to rejoice in an astral, besides\na hardly tangible body. In another Commentary it is said that\nthe \"Ancestors\" *breathed *out the first man,\nas Brahma is explained to have breathed out the *Suras *(Gods),\nwhen they became \"*Asuras*\"* *(from *Asu,\n*breath). In a third it is said that they, the newly-created\nmen, \"were the shadows of the Shadows.\"\n\nWith regard to this sentence -- \"They were the shadows of\nthe Shadows\" -- a few more words may be said and a fuller\nexplanation attempted. This first process of the evolution of\nmankind is far easier to accept than the one which follows it,\nthough one and all will be rejected and doubted even by some Kabalists,\nespecially the Western, who study the present effects, but have\nneglected to study their primary causes. Nor does the writer feel\ncompetent to explain a mode of procreation so difficult of appreciation\nsave for an Eastern Occultist. Therefore it is useless to enter\nhere into details concerning the process, though it is minutely\ndescribed in the Secret Books, as it would only lead to speaking\nof facts hitherto unknown to the profane world, and hence to their\nbeing misunderstood. An \"Adam\" made of the dust of the\nground will always be found preferable, by a certain class of\nstudents, to one projected out of the ethereal body of his creator;\nthough the former process has never been heard of, while the latter\nis familiar, as all know, to many Spiritualists in Europe and\nAmerica, who, of all men, ought to understand it. For who of those\nwho have witnessed the phenomenon of a materialising form oozing\nout of the pores of a medium or, at other times, out of his *left\nside, *can fail to credit the possibility, at least, of such\na *birth? *If there are\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 87 MAN NOT CREATED PERFECT.\n\nin the Universe such beings as Angels or Spirits, whose *incorporeal\n*essence may constitute an intelligent entity notwithstanding\nthe absence of any (to us) solid organism; and if there are those\nwho believe that a god made the first man out of dust, and breathed\ninto him a living Soul -- and there are millions upon millions\nwho believe both -- what does this doctrine of ours contain that\nis so impossible? Very soon the day will dawn, when the world\nwill have to choose whether it will accept the miraculous creation\nof man (and Kosmos too) out of *nothing, *according to\nthe dead letter of *Genesis, *or a first man born from\na fantastic link -- absolutely \"*missing*\"*\n*so far -- the common ancestor of man, and of the \"true\nape.\"* Between these two fallacies,** Occult philosophy steps\nin. It teaches that the first human stock was projected by higher\nand semi-divine Beings out of their own essences. If the latter\nprocess is to be considered as abnormal or even inconceivable\n-- because obsolete in Nature at this point of evolution -- it\nis yet proven possible on the authority of certain \"Spiritualistic\"\nFACTS. Which, then, we ask of the three hypotheses or theories\nis the most reasonable and the least absurd? Certainly no one\n-- provided he is not a soul-blind materialist -- can ever object\nto the occult teaching.\n\nNow, as shown, we gather from the latter that man was not \"created\"\nthe complete being he is now, however imperfect he still remains.\nThere was a spiritual, a psychic, an intellectual, and an animal\nevolution, from the highest to the lowest, as well as a physical\ndevelopment -- from the simple and homogeneous, up to the more\ncomplex and heterogeneous; though not quite on the lines traced\nfor us by the modern evolutionists. This double evolution in two\ncontrary directions, required various ages, of divers natures\nand degrees of spirituality and intellectuality, to fabricate\nthe being now known as man. B. Aveling, p. 49).\n\nWhat may be the scientific and *logical* objections to\nthe opposite conclusion -- we would ask? The anatomical resemblances\nbetween Man and the Anthropoids -- grossly exaggerated as they\nare by Darwinists, as M. de Quatrefages shows -- are simply enough\n\"accounted for\" when the origin of the latter is taken\ninto consideration.\n\n\"Nowhere, in the older deposits, is an ape to be found that\napproximates more closely to man, or a man that approximates more\nclosely to an ape . . . . . .\"\n\n** \". . . . . The same gulf which is found to-day between\nMan and Ape, goes back with undiminished breadth and depth to\nthe Tertiary period. This fact alone is enough to make its untenability\nclear,\" (Dr. F. The Esotericism of both is at one with\nour Secret Doctrine, however much the form may differ and vary.\n\n-------\n\n**O**N THE **I**DENTITY AND **D**IFFERENCES\nOF THE **I**NCARNATING **P**OWERS.\n\n**T**HE Progenitors of Man, called in India \"Fathers,\"\nPitara or Pitris, are the creators of our bodies and lower principles.\nThey are ourselves, as the *first personalities,* and*\nwe are they. *Primeval man would be \"the bone of their\nbone and the flesh of their flesh,\" if they had body and\nflesh. As stated, they were \"*lunar *Beings.\"\n\nThe Endowers of man with his conscious, immortal EGO, are the\n\"Solar Angels\" -- whether so regarded metaphorically\nor literally. The mysteries of the Conscious EGO or human Soul\nare great. The esoteric name of these \"Solar Angels\"\nis, literally, the \"Lords\" (*Nath*)* *of*\n*\"persevering ceaseless devotion\" (*pranidhana*)*.\n*Therefore they of the *fifth* principle* *(*Manas*)*\n*seem to be connected with, or to have originated the system\nof the Yogis who make of *pranidhana *their* fifth*\nobservance (see *Yoga Shastra, *II., 32.) It has already\nbeen explained why the trans-Himalayan Occultists regard them\nas evidently identical with those who in India are termed *Kumaras,\nAgnishwattas, *and the *Barhishads.*\n\nHow precise and true is Plato's expression, how profound and philosophical\nhis remark on the (human) soul or EGO, when he defined it as \"a\ncompound of the *same *and the *other.*\"*\n*And yet how little this hint has been understood, since the\nworld took it to mean that the soul was the breath of God, of\nJehovah. It is \"the *same *and the *other,*\"*\n*as the great Initiate-Philosopher said; for the EGO (the\n\"Higher Self\" when merged with and in the Divine Monad)\nis Man, and yet the *same *as the \"OTHER,\" the\nAngel in him incarnated, as the same with the universal **M**AHAT.\nThe great classics and philosophers felt this truth, when saying\nthat \"there must be something within us which produces our\nthoughts. Something very subtle; it is a breath; it is fire; it\nis ether;\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 89 PITRIS OF THE GODS AND DEMONS.\n\nit is quintessence; it is a slender likeness; it is an intellection;\nit is a number; it is harmony. . . . . \"* *(*Voltaire*)*.*\n\nAll these are the *Manasam* and* Rajasas:* the*\nKumaras, Asuras, *and* *other rulers and *Pitris,\n*who incarnated in the Third Race, and in this and various\nother ways endowed mankind with Mind.\n\nThere are seven classes of Pitris, as shown below, three incorporeal\nand four corporeal; and two kinds, the Agnishwatta and the Barhishad.\nAnd we may add that, as there are two kinds of Pitris, so there\nis a double and a triple set of Barhishad and Agnishwatta. The\nformer, having given birth to their astral doubles, are reborn\nas *Sons of Atri, *and are the \"Pitris of the Demons,\"\nor corporeal beings, on the authority of Manu (III., 196); while\nthe Agnishwatta are reborn as Sons of Marichi (a son of Brahma),\nand are the Pitris of the Gods (*Manu *again, *Matsya*\nand* Padma Puranas *and* Kulluka *in the Laws of\nthe *Manavas, *III., 195).* Moreover, the *Vayu Purana\n*declares all the seven orders to have originally been the\n*first gods, *the* Vairajas, *whom Brahma \"with\nthe eye of Yoga, beheld in the eternal spheres, and who are the\n*gods of gods*\";* *and the *Matsya *adds\nthat the Gods worshipped them; while the *Harivansa *(*S.\n*1, 935) distinguishes the Virajas as one class of the Pitris\nonly -- a statement corroborated in the Secret Teachings, which,\nhowever, identify the Virajas with the *elder Agnishwattas**\n*and the *Rajasas, *or* Abhutarajasas, *who\nare incorporeal without even an astral phantom. Vishnu is said,\nin most of the **MSS**., to have incarnated in and through\nthem. \"In the *Raivata Manvantara, *again, Hari, best\nof gods, was born of *Sambhuti, *as the divine Manasas\n-- originating with the deities called Rajasas.\" Sambhuti\nwas a daughter of Daksha, and wife of Marichi, the father of the\n*Agnishwatta, *who, along with the Rajasas, are ever associated\nwith *Manasas. *As remarked by a far more able Sanskritist\nthan Wilson, Mr. Fitzedward Hall, \"Manasa is no inappropriate\nname for a deity associated with the Rajasas. We appear to have\nin it Manasam -- the same as *Manas *-- with* *the\nchange of termination required to express male personification\"\n(*Vishnu Purana *Bk. III., ch. I., p. 17 footnote). But do not Christian,\nRoman Catholics identify their Angels with planets, and are not\nthe seven Rishis become the *Saptarshi *-- a constellation?\nThey are deities presiding over all the cyclic divisions.\n\n** The Vayu Purana shows the region called Viraja-loka inhabited\nby the Agnishwattas.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 90 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nViraja is Brahma, and, therefore, the *incorporeal *Pitris\nare called Vairajas from being the sons of Viraja, says *Vayu\nPurana.*\n\nWe could multiply our proofs *ad infinitum, *but it is\nuseless. The wise will understand our meaning, the *unwise\n*are not required to. There are thirty-three crores, or 330\nmillions, of gods in India. But, as remarked by the learned lecturer\non the Bhagavad Gita, \"they may be all devas, but are by\nno means all 'gods', in the high spiritual sense one attributes\nto the term.\" \"This is an unfortunate blunder,\"\nhe remarks, \"generally committed by Europeans. Deva is a\nkind of spiritual being, and because the same word is used in\nordinary parlance to mean god, it by no means follows that we\nhave to worship thirty-three crores of gods.\" And he adds\nsuggestively: \"These beings, as may be naturally inferred\nhave a *certain affinity *with one of the three component\n*Upadhis *(basic principles) into which we have divided\nman.\" -- (*Vide Theosophist, *Feb.,* *1887,\n*et seq.*)\n\nThe names of the deities of a certain mystic class change with\nevery Manvantara. Thus the twelve great gods, *Jayas, *created\nby Brahma to assist him in the work of creation in the very beginning\nof the Kalpa, and who, lost in Samadhi, neglected to create --\nwhereupon they were cursed to be repeatedly born in each Manvantara\ntill the seventh -- are respectively called *Ajitas, Tushitas,\nSatyas, Haris, Vaikunthas, Sadhyas, *and* Adityas: *they\nare *Tushitas *(in the second Kalpa), and *Adityas *in\nthis *Vaivasvata *period (see *Vayu Purana*)*,\n*besides other names for each age. But they are identical\nwith the *Manasa *or* Rajasas, *and these with our\nincarnating Dhyan Chohans. They are all classes of the *Gnana-devas.*\n\nYes; besides those beings, who, like the Yakshas, Gandharvas,\nKinaras, etc., etc., taken in their *individualities, *inhabit\nthe astral plane, there are real *Devagnanams, *and to\nthese classes of *Devas *belong the *Adityas,* the*\nVairajas, *the* Kumaras,* the* Asuras, *and\nall those high celestial beings whom Occult teaching calls *Manaswin,\n*the Wise, foremost of all, and who would have made all men\nthe *self-conscious *spiritually intellectual beings they\nwill be, had they not been \"cursed\" to fall into generation,\nand to be reborn themselves as mortals for their neglect of duty.\n\n-------\n\n##### STANZA IV. -- (Continued.)\n\n15. **S**EVEN TIMES **S**EVEN **S**HADOWS\n(*chhayas*)* *OF **F**UTURE **M**EN\n(*or Amanasas*)* *(*a*)* *WERE*\n*(*thus*)* ***B**ORN, **E**ACH\nOF HIS OWN COLOUR (*complexion*)* *AND KIND (*b*).\nEACH* *(*also*)* *INFERIOR TO HIS **F**ATHER\n(*creator*)*.* **T**HE **F**ATHERS,\nTHE **B**ONELESS, COULD GIVE NO **L**IFE\nTO **B**EINGS WITH\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 91 SEVEN CLASSES OF PITRIS.\n\n**B**ONES. **T**HEIR **P**ROGENY\nWERE **B**HUTA (*phantoms*)* *WITH\nNEITHER **F**ORM NOR **M**IND, **T**HEREFORE\nTHEY WERE CALLED THE **C**HHAYA (*image or shadow*)\n**R**ACE* *(*c*).\n\n(*a*)* Manu, *as already remarked, comes from the\nroot \"*man*\"* *to think, hence \"a\nthinker.\" It is from this Sanskrit word very likely that\nsprung the Latin \"mens,\" mind, the Egyptian \"*Menes,*\"*\n*the \"Master-Mind,\" the Pythagorean *Monas, *or\nconscious \"*thinking unit,*\"* *mind also,\nand even our \"Manas\" or mind, the fifth principle in\nman. Hence these shadows are called *amanasa, *\"mindless.\"\n\nWith the Brahmins the Pitris are very sacred, because they are\nthe Progenitors,* or ancestors of men -- the first *Manushya\n*on this Earth -- and offerings are made to them by the Brahmin\nwhen a son is born unto him. They are more honoured and their\nritual is more important than the worship of the gods (See the\n\"*Laws of Manu,*\"* *Bk. III., p. 203).\n\nMay we not now search for a philosophical meaning in this dual\ngroup of progenitors?\n\nThe Pitris being divided into *seven classes, *we have\nhere the mystic number again. Nearly all the Puranas agree that\nthree of these are *arupa, *formless, while four are corporeal;\nthe former being intellectual and spiritual, the latter material\nand devoid of intellect. Esoterically, it is the *Asuras *who\nform the first three classes of Pitris -- \"born in the body\nof night\" -- whereas the other four were produced from the\nbody of twilight. Their fathers, the gods, were doomed to be born\nfools on Earth, according to *Vayu Purana. *The legends\nare purposely mixed up and made very hazy: the Pitris being in\none the sons of the gods, and, in another those of Brahma; while\na third makes them instructors of their own fathers. It is the\nHosts of the four material classes who create men simultaneously\non the seven zones.\n\nNow, with regard to the seven classes of Pitris, each of which\nis again divided into seven, a word to students and a query to\nthe profane. That class of the \"Fire Dhyanis,\" which\nwe identify on undeniable grounds with the Agnishwattas, is called\nin our school the \"Heart\" of the Dhyan-Chohanic Body;\nand it is said to have incarnated in the third race of men and\nmade them perfect. The esoteric Mystagogy speaks of the mysterious\nrelation existing between the hebdomadic essence or substance\nof this angelic Heart and that of man, whose\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* This was hinted at in *Isis Unveiled, Vol. *I.*, p*.\nxxxviii., though the full explanation could not then be given:\n\"The *Pitris *are not the ancestors of the present\nliving men, but those of the first human kind or Adamic race;\nthe spirits of *human* races, which, on the great scale\nof descending evolution, preceded our races of men, and were physically\nas well as spiritually, far superior to our modem pigmies. Why should the heart have *four lower *\"cavities\nand *three higher *divisions,\" answering so strangely\nto the septenary division of the human principles, separated into\ntwo groups, the higher and the lower; and why should the same\ndivision be found in the various classes of Pitris, and especially\nour Fire Dhyanis? For, as already stated, these Beings fall into\nfour corporeal (or grosser) and three incorporeal (or subtler)\n\"principles,\" or call them by any other name you please.\nWhy do the seven nervous plexuses of the body radiate *seven*\nrays? Why are there these seven plexuses, and why seven distinct\nlayers in the human skin?\n\n\"*Having projected their shadows and made men of one element\n*(ether), *the progenitors re-ascend to Maha-loka, whence\nthey descend periodically, when the world is renewed, to give\nbirth to new men.*\n\n\"*The subtle bodies remain without understanding *(Manas)*\nuntil the advent of the Suras *(Gods)* now called Asuras\n*(not Gods),\" says the Commentary.\n\n\"*Not-gods,*\"* *for the Brahmins, perhaps,\nbut the highest *Breaths, *for* *the Occultist;\nsince those progenitors (Pitar), the formless and the intellectual,\nrefuse to build man, but endow him with mind; the four corporeal\nclasses creating only his body.\n\nThis is very plainly shown in various texts of the *Rig Veda*\n-- the highest authority for a Hindu of any sect whatever. Therein\n*Asura *means \"spiritual divine,\" and the word\nis used as a synonym for Supreme Spirit, while in the sense of\na \"God,\" the term \"Asura\" is applied to Varuna\nand Indra and pre-eminently to Agni -- the three having been in\ndays of old the *three highest gods, *before Brahmanical\nTheo-Mythology distorted the true meaning of almost everything\nin the Archaic Scriptures. But, as the key is now lost, the Asuras\nare hardly mentioned.\n\nIn the *Zendavesta *the same is found. In the Mazdean,\nor Magian, religion, \"Asura\" is the lord *Asura Visvavedas,\n*the \"all-knowing\" or \"omniscient Lord\";\nand *Asura-Mazdha, *become later *Ahura-Mazdha,*\nis, as Benfey shows, \"the Lord who *bestows Intelligence*\"*\n*-- Asura-Medha and Ahura-Mazdao. Elsewhere in this work it\nis shown, on equally good authority, that the Indo-Iranian Asura\nwas always regarded as *sevenfold. *This fact, combined\nwith the name Mazdha, as above, which makes of the sevenfold Asura\nthe \"Lord,\" or \"Lords\" collectively \"who\n*bestow Intelligence,*\"* *connects the *Amshaspends\n*with the Asuras and with our incarnating Dhyan Chohans, as\nwell as with the Elohim, and the seven informing gods of Egypt,\nChaldea, and every other country.\n\nWhy these \"gods\" refused to create men is not, as stated\nin exoteric\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 93 A GRAND APOCALYPTIC METAPHOR.\n\naccounts, because their pride was too great to share the celestial\npower of their essence with the children of Earth, but for reasons\nalready suggested. However, allegory has indulged in endless fancies\nand theology taken advantage thereof in every country to make\nout its case against these first-born, or the *logoi, *and\nto impress it as a truth on the minds of the ignorant and credulous.\n(Compare also what is said about Makara and the Kumaras in connection\nwith the Zodiac.)\n\nThe Christian system is not the only one which has degraded them\ninto demons. Zoroastrianism and even Brahmanism have profited\nthereby to obtain hold over the people's mind. Even in Chaldean\nexotericism, Beings who *refuse to create, i.e., *who are\nsaid to oppose thereby the *Demiurgos, *are also denounced\nas the Spirits of Darkness. The Suras, who win their intellectual\nindependence, fight the Suras who are devoid thereof, who are\nshown as passing their lives in profitless ceremonial worship\nbased on blind faith -- a hint now ignored by the *orthodox\n*Brahmins -- and forthwith the former become *A-Suras.\nThe *first and *mind-born *Sons of the Deity refuse\nto create progeny, and are *cursed *by Brahma to be *born\nas men. *They are hurled *down to Earth, *which, later\non, is transformed, in theological dogma, into the *infernal\n*regions. Ahriman destroys the Bull created by Ormazd -- which\nis the emblem of terrestrial *illusive *life, the \"germ\nof sorrow\" -- and, forgetting that the perishing finite seed\nmust die, in order that the plant of immortality, the plant of\nspiritual, eternal life, should sprout and live, Ahriman is proclaimed\nthe enemy, the opposing power, the devil. Typhon cuts Osiris into\nfourteen pieces, in order to prevent his peopling the world and\nthus creating misery; and Typhon becomes, in the exoteric, theological\nteaching, the Power of Darkness. But all this is the exoteric\nshell. It is the worshippers of the latter who attribute to disobedience\nand rebellion the effort and self-sacrifice of those who would\nhelp men to their original status of divinity through *self-conscious\n*efforts; and it is these worshippers of Form who have made\ndemons of the Angels of Light.\n\nEsoteric philosophy, however, teaches that *one third* *of\nthe Dhyanis -- *i.e.*, the three classes of the *Arupa\n*Pitris, endowed with intelligence, \"which is a formless\nbreath, composed of *intellectual *not elementary substances\"\n(see *Harivamsa, *932)* *-- was simply *doomed\nby the law of Karma and evolution to be reborn *(or incarnated)\non Earth.** Some\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Whence the subsequent assertions of St. John's vision, referred\nto in his Apocalypse, about \"the great red Dragon having\nseven heads and *ten *horns, and seven crowns upon his\nheads,\" whose \"tail drew the *third part *of\nthe stars of heaven and did cast them to the earth\" (ch.\nxii.).\n\n** The verse \"did cast them to the Earth,\" plainly shows\nits origin in the grandest and oldest allegory of the Aryan mystics,\nwho, after the destruction of the Atlantean [[Footnote continued\non next page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 94 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nof these were *Nirmanakayas *from other Manvantaras. This tenet, being too philosophical and metaphysical\nto be grasped by the multitudes, was, as already stated, disfigured\nby the priesthood for the purpose of preserving a hold over them\nthrough superstitious fear.\n\nThe supposed \"rebels,\" then, were simply those who,\ncompelled by Karmic law to drink the cup of gall to its last bitter\ndrop, *had to incarnate *anew, and thus make responsible\nthinking entities of the astral statues projected by their inferior\nbrethren. Where there\nis no struggle, there is no merit. Humanity, \"of the Earth\nearthy,\" was not destined to be created by the angels of\nthe first divine Breath: therefore they are said to *have refused\n*to do so, and man had to be formed by more material creators,*\nwho, in their turn, could give only what they had in their own\nnatures, and no more. The philosophical Gnostics were the first\nto think so, in the historical period, and to invent various systems\nupon this theory. Therefore in their schemes of creation, one\nalways finds their *Creators *occupying a place at the\nvery foot of the ladder of spiritual Being. With them, those who\ncreated our earth and its mortals were placed on the very limit\nof *mayavic *matter, and their followers were taught to\nthink -- to the great disgust of the Church Fathers -- that for\nthe creation of those wretched races, in a spiritual and moral\nsense, which grace our globe, no high divinity could be made responsible,\nbut only angels of a *low hierarchy,* *to which class they\nrelegated the Jewish God, Jehovah.\n\nMankinds different from the present are mentioned in all the ancient\nCosmogonies. In *Pymander,\n*the Seven primitive men, created by Nature from the \"heavenly\nMan,\" all partake of the qualities of the \"Seven *Governors,*\"*\n*or Rulers, who loved Man -- their own reflection and synthesis.\n\nIn the Norse Legends, one recognizes in Asgard, the habitat of\nthe gods, as also in the *Ases *themselves, the same mystical\n*loci *and personifications woven into the popular \"myths,\"\nas in our Secret Doctrine; and we find them in the Vedas, the\nPuranas, the Mazdean Scriptures and the Kabala. In this work Mr. George Smith gives an engraving, from an\nearly Babylonian cylinder, of the Sacred Tree, the Serpent, man\nand woman. The tree has seven branches: *three *on the\nman's side, *four *on that of the female. These branches\nare typical of the seven Root-Races, in the *third *of\nwhich, at its very close, occurred the separation of the sexes\nand the so-called FALL into generation. The three earliest Races\nwere sexless, then hermaphrodite; the other four, male and female,\nas distinct from each other. \"The Dragon,\" says Mr.\nG. Smith, \"which in the Chaldean account of the creation\nleads man to sin, is the creation of Tiamat, the living principle\nof the Sea, or Chaos . . . which was opposed to the deities at\nthe creation of the world.\" This is an error. The Dragon\nis the male principle, or Phallus, personified, or rather *animalized*;*\n*and Tiamat, \"the embodiment of the Spirit of Chaos,\"\nof the deep, or Abyss, is the female principle, the Womb. It is\nthe sensual, attractive, magnetic principle which fascinates and\nseduces, the ever living active element which throws the whole\nworld into disorder, chaos, and sin. The Serpent seduces the woman,\nbut it is the latter who seduces man, and both are included in\nthe Karmic curse, though only as a natural result of a cause produced.\nSays George Smith: \"It is clear that the Dragon is included\nin the curse for the Fall, and that the Gods\" (the Elohim,\njealous at seeing the man of clay becoming a Creator in his turn,\nlike all the animals,) \"invoke on the head of the human Race\nall the evils which afflict humanity. Wisdom and knowledge shall\ninjure him, he shall have family quarrels, he will anger the gods,\nhe shall submit to tyranny. . . . he shall be disappointed in\nhis desires, he shall pour out* useless prayers, *he shall\ncommit future sin. . No doubt subsequent lines continue this topic,\nbut again our narrative is broken, and it re-opens only where\nthe gods are preparing for war with the powers of evil, which\nare led by Tiamat (the woman). . . . \" (*Babylonian Legend\nof Creation, *p. 92.)\n\nThis account is omitted in *Genesis, *for monotheistic\npurposes. But it is a mistaken policy -- born no doubt of fear,\nand regard for dogmatic religion and its superstitions -- to have\nsought to restore the Chaldean fragments by *Genesis, *whereas\nit is the latter, far younger than any of the fragments, which\nought to be explained by the former.\n\n-------\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 105 MAN'S FATHER, THE SUN.\n\n17. **T**HE BREATH (*human Monad*)* *NEEDED\nA FORM; THE** F**ATHERS GAVE IT. **T**HE\nBREATH NEEDED A GROSS BODY; **T**HE EARTH MOULDED\nIT. **T**HE **B**REATH NEEDED THE SPIRIT\nOF LIFE; THE SOLAR LHAS BREATHED IT INTO ITS FORM. (*Vide* paragraph\n(*a*)), a few remarks will now suffice. The \"Father\"\nof primitive physical man, or of his body, is the vital electric\nprinciple residing in the Sun. The Moon is its Mother, because\nof that mysterious power in the Moon which has as decided an influence\nupon human gestation and generation, which it regulates, as it\nhas on the growth of plants and animals. The \"Wind\"\nor Ether, standing in this case for the agent of transmission\nby which those influences are carried down from the two luminaries\nand diffused upon Earth, is referred to as the \"nurse\";\nwhile \"Spiritual Fire\" alone makes of man a divine and\nperfect entity.\n\nNow what is that \"Spiritual Fire\"? In alchemy it is\nHYDROGEN, in general; while in esoteric actuality it is the emanation\nor the Ray which proceeds from its *noumenon, *the \"Dhyan\nof the first Element.\" Hydrogen is *gas *only on our\nterrestrial plane. But even in chemistry hydrogen \"would\nbe the only existing form of matter, in our sense of the term,\"*\nand is very nearly allied to *protyle, *which is our *layam.\n*It is the father and generator, so to say, or rather the\n*Upadhi *(basis), of both AIR and WATER, and is \"fire,\nair and water,\" in fact: *one* under three aspects;\nhence the chemical and alchemical trinity. In the world of manifestation\nor matter it is the objective symbol and the material emanation\nfrom the subjective and purely spiritual entitative Being in the\nregion of *noumena. *Well might Godfrey Higgins have compared\nHydrogen to, and even identified it with, the To ON, the \"One\"\nof the Greeks. For, as he remarks, Hydrogen is *not* Water,\nthough it generates it; Hydrogen is not fire, though it manifests\nor creates it; nor is it Air, though air may be regarded as a\nproduct of the union of Water and\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* See* *\"*Genesis of the Elements,*\"*\n*by Prof. W. Crookes, p. 21.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 106 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nFire -- since Hydrogen is found in the aqueous element of the\natmosphere. It is three in one.\n\nIf one studies comparative Theogony, it is easy to find that the\nsecret of these \"Fires\" was taught in the *Mysteries\n*of every ancient people, pre-eminently in Samothrace. There\nis not the smallest doubt that the Kabeiri, the most arcane of\nall the ancient deities, gods and men, great deities and Titans,\nare identical with the Kumaras and Rudras headed by Kartikeya\n-- a Kumara also. This is quite evident even exoterically; and\nthese Hindu deities were, like the Kabeiri, the* personified\nsacred Fires of the most occult powers of Nature. The *several\nbranches of the Aryan Race, the Asiatic and the European, the\nHindu and the Greek, did their best to conceal their true nature,\nif not their importance. As in the case of the Kumaras, the number\nof the Kabeiri is uncertain. Some say that there were three or\nfour only; others say seven. Aschieros, Achiosersa, Achiochersus,\nand Camillus may very well stand for the *alter egos *of\nthe four Kumaras -- Sanat-Kumara, Sananda, Sanaka, and Sanatana.\nThe former deities, whose reputed father was Vulcan, were often\nconfounded with the Dioscuri, Corybantes, Anaces, etc.; just as\nthe Kumara, whose reputed father is Brahma, (or rather, the \"Flame\nof his Wrath,\" which prompted him to perform the ninth or\nKumara creation, resulting in Rudra or Nilalohita (Siva) and the\nKumaras), were confounded with the Asuras, the Rudras, and the\nPitris, for the simple reason that they are all one -- *i.e.*,\ncorrelative Forces and Fires. There is no space to describe these\n\"fires\" and their real meaning here, though we may attempt\nto do so if the third and fourth volumes of this work are ever\npublished. Meanwhile a few more explanations may be added.\n\nThe foregoing are all mysteries which must be left to the personal\nintuition of the student for solution, rather than described.\nIf he would learn something of the secret of the FIRES, let him\nturn to certain works of the Alchemists, who very correctly connect\nfire with every element, as do the Occultists. The reader must\nremember that the ancients considered religion, and the natural\nsciences along with philosophy, to be closely and inseparably\nlinked together. AEsculapius was the Son of Apollo -- the Sun\nor FIRE of Life; at once *Helios, Pythios, *and the god\nof oracular Wisdom. In exoteric religions, as much as in esoteric\nphilosophy, the Elements -- especially fire, water, and air --\nare made the progenitors of our *five* *physical senses,\n*and hence are directly connected (in an occult way) with\nthem. These physical senses pertain even to a lower creation than\nthe one called in the Puranas *Pratisarga, *or secondary\nCreation. \"Liquid fire proceeds from indiscrete fire,\"\nsays an Occult axiom.\n\n\"The Circle is the THOUGHT; the diameter (or the line) is\nthe WORD;\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 107 BATH-KOL, DAUGHTER OF THE VOICE.\n\nand their union is LIFE.\" In the Kabala, Bath-Kol is the\ndaughter of the *Divine Voice, *or primordial light, Shekinah.\nIn the Puranas and Hindu exotericism, Vach (the Voice) is the\nfemale *Logos *of Brahma -- a permutation of Aditi, *primordial\nlight. *And if Bath-Kol, in Jewish mysticism, is an articulate\npraeternatural voice from heaven, revealing to the \"chosen\npeople\" the sacred traditions and laws, it is only because\nVach was called, before Judaism, the \"Mother of the Vedas,\"\nwho entered into the Rishis and inspired them by her revelations;\njust as Bath-Kol is said to have inspired the prophets of Israel\nand the Jewish High-Priests. And both exist to this day, in their\nrespective sacred symbologies, because the ancients associated\nsound or Speech with the Ether of Space, of which Sound is the\ncharacteristic. Hence Fire, Water and Air are the primordial Cosmic\nTrinity. \"I am thy Thought, thy God, more ancient than the\nmoist principle, the *light that radiates within Darkness *(Chaos),\nand the shining *Word *of God (Sound) is the Son of the\nDeity.\" (\"Pymander,\" § 6.)*\n\nThus we have to study well the \"Primary creation,\" before\nwe can understand the Secondary. The first Race had three *rudimentary\n*elements in it; and *no fire *as yet; because, with\nthe Ancients, the evolution of man, and the growth and development\nof his spiritual and physical senses, were subordinate to the\nevolution of the elements on the Cosmic plane of this Earth. All\nproceeds from *Prabhavapyaya, *the evolution of the creative\nand sentient principles in the gods, and even of the so-called\ncreative deity himself. This is found in the names and appellations\ngiven to Vishnu in exoteric scriptures. As the *Protologos\n*(the* *Orphic), he is called *Purvaja, *\"pregenetic,\"\nand then the other names connect him in their descending order\nmore and more with matter.\n\nThe following order on parallel lines may be found in the evolution\nof the Elements and the Senses; or in Cosmic terrestrial \"MAN\"\nor \"Spirit,\" and mortal physical man: --\n\n1. Ether ... Hearing ... Sound.\n\n2. Air ... Touch ... Sound and Touch.\n\n3. Fire, or Light ... Sight ... Sound, Touch and Colour.\n\n4. Water ... Taste ... Sound, Touch, Colour and Taste.\n\n*5.* Earth ... Smell ... Sound, Touch, Colour, Taste and\nSmell.\n\nAs seen, each Element adds to its own characteristics, those of\nits\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The opponents of Hinduism may call the above Pantheism, Polytheism,\nor anything they may please. If Science is not entirely blinded\nby prejudice, it will see in this account a profound knowledge\nof *natural Sciences and Physics, *as well as of Metaphysics\nand Psychology. But to find this out, one has to study the personifications,\nand then convert them into chemical atoms. It will then be found\nto satisfy both physical and even purely materialistic *Science*,\nas well as those who see in evolution the work of the \"Great\nUnknown Cause\" in its phenomenal and illusive aspects.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 108 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\npredecessor; as each Root-Race adds the characterizing sense of\nthe preceding Race. The same is true in the *septenary *creation\nof man, who evolves gradually in seven stages, and on the same\nprinciples, as will be shown further on.\n\nThus, while Gods or Dhyan Chohans (Devas) proceed from the First\nCause -- which is not Parabrahm, for the latter is the ALL CAUSE,\nand cannot be referred to as the \"*First *Cause,\"\n-- which First Cause is called in the Brahmanical Books Jagad-Yoni,\n\"the womb of the world,\" mankind emanates from these\nactive agents in Kosmos. But men, during the first and the second\nraces, were not physical beings, but merely *rudiments *of\nthe future men: *Bhutas, *which proceeded from Bhutadi,\n\"origin,\" or the \"original place whence sprung\nthe Elements.\" Hence they proceeded with all the rest from\n*Prabhavapyaya, *\"the place whence is the origination,\nand into which is the resolution of all things,\" as explained\nby the Commentator. Whence also our physical senses. Whence even\nthe highest \"created\" deity itself, in our philosophy.\nAs one with the Universe, whether we call him Brahma, Iswara,\nor Purusha, he is a manifested deity, -- hence created, or limited\nand conditioned. This is easily proven, even from the exoteric\nteachings.\n\nAfter being called the *incognizable, *eternal Brahma (neuter\nor abstract), the Punda-Rikaksha, \"supreme and imperishable\nglory,\" once that instead of *Sadaika-Rupa, *\"changeless\"\nor \"immutable\" Nature, he is addressed as *Ekanaka-Rupa,\n*\"both single and manifold,\" he, the cause, becomes\nmerged with his own effects; and his names, if placed in esoteric\norder, show the following descending scale: --\n\n1. Mahapurusha or Paramatman ... Supreme Spirit.\n\n*2.* Atman or Purvaja (Protologos) ...The living Spirit\nof Nature.\n\n3. Indriyatman, or Hrishikesa ..........Spiritual or intellectual\nsoul (One with the senses).\n\n5. Bhutatman ................................ . The living, or\nLife Soul.\n\n6. Kshetrajna .................................. Embodied soul,\nor the Universe of Spirit and Matter.\n\n7. Bhrantidarsanatah .........................False perception\n-- Material Universe.\n\nThe last name means something perceived or conceived of, owing\nto false and erroneous apprehension, as a material form; but,\nin fact, only *Maya, *illusion, as all is in our physical\nuniverse.\n\nIt is in strict analogy with ITS attributes in both the spiritual\nand material worlds, that the evolution of the Dhyan Chohanic\nEssences takes place; the characteristics of the latter being\nreflected, in their turn, in *Man, *collectively, and in\neach of his principles; *every one of which contains in itself,\nin the same progressive order, a portion of their various *\"*fires*\"*\nand elements.*\n\nNext Section\n\nContents",
