It is comparatively easy to conceive of an oviparous humanity,\nsince even now man is, in one sense, \"egg-born.\" Magendie,\nmoreover, in his *Precis Elementaire de Physiologie, *citing*\n*\"a case where the umbilical cord was ruptured and perfectly\ncicatrized,\" yet the infant was born alive, pertinently asks,\n\"How was the circulation carried on in this organ?\"\nOn the next page he says: \"Nothing is at present known respecting\nthe use of digestion in the foetus;\" and respecting its nutrition,\npropounds this query: \"What, then, can we say of the nutrition\nof the foetus? Physiological works contain only *vague conjectures\n*on this point.\" \"Ah, but,\" the sceptic may\nurge, \"Magendie's book belongs to the last generation, and\nScience has since made such strides that his stigma of ignorance\ncan no longer be fixed upon the profession.\" Indeed; then\nlet us turn to a very great authority upon Physiology, viz., Sir\nM. Foster (*Text-Book of Physiology, *third edition, 1879,\np. 623); and to the disadvantage of modern Science we shall find\nhim saying, \"Concerning the rise and development of the functional\nactivities of the embryo, our knowledge is almost a blank. We\nknow scarcely anything about the various steps by which the primary\nfundamental qualities of the protoplasm of the ovum are differentiated\ninto the complex phenomena which we have attempted in\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 132 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nthis book to explain.\" The students of Trin. Coll. Cantab.\nwill now kindly draw a veil before the statue of Hygeia and bandage\nthe eyes of the busts of Galen and Hippocrates, lest they look\nreproachfully at their degenerate descendants. One further fact\nwe must note. Sir M. Foster is discreetly silent about the case\nof the ruptured umbilical cord cited by his great French *confrere.*\n\nThis is a very curious statement as explained in the Commentaries.\nTo make it clear: The First Race having created the Second by\n\"budding,\" as just explained, the Second Race gives\nbirth to the Third -- which itself is separated into three distinct\ndivisions, consisting of men differently procreated. The first\ntwo of these are produced by an oviparous method, presumably unknown\nto modern Natural History. While the early sub-races of the Third\nHumanity procreated their species by a kind of exudation of moisture\nor vital fluid, the drops of which coalescing formed an oviform\nball -- or shall we say egg? -- which served as an extraneous\nvehicle for the generation therein of a *foetus *and child,\nthe mode of procreation by the later races changed, in its results\nat all events. The little ones of the earlier races were entirely\nsexless -- shapeless even for all one knows*; but those of the\nlater races were born androgynous. It is in the Third Race that\nthe separation of sexes occurred. From being previously a-sexual,\nHumanity became distinctly hermaphrodite or bi-sexual; and finally\nthe man-bearing eggs began to give birth, gradually and almost\nimperceptibly in their evolutionary development, first, to Beings\nin which one sex predominated over the other, and, finally, to\ndistinct men and women. And now let us search for corroboration\nof these statements in the religious legends of East and West.\nLet us take the \"Egg-born Race\" first. Think of Kasyapa,\nthe Vedic sage, and the most prolific of creators. He was the\nson of Marichi, Brahma's mind-born son; and he is made to become\nthe father of the *Nagas, *or Serpents, among other beings.\nExoterically, the *Nagas *are semi-divine beings which\nhave a human face and the tail of a serpent. Yet there was a race\nof *Nagas, *said to be a thousand in number only, born\nor rather sprung from Kadra, Kasyapa's wife, for *the purpose\nof peopling Patala, *which is undeniably America, as will\nbe shown; and there was a NAGA-Dwipa, one of the seven divisions\nof Bharata-Varsha, India, inhabited by a people bearing the same\nname, who are allowed, even by some Orientalists, to be *historical,\n*and to have left many a trace behind them to this day.\n\nNow the point most insisted upon at present is that, whatever\norigin be claimed for man, his evolution took place in this order:\n(1) Sexless, as all the earlier forms are; (2) then, by a natural\ntransition, he became,\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* See the \"Timaeus.\"\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 133 BI-SEXUAL REPRODUCTION.\n\n\"a solitary hermaphrodite,\" a bi-sexual being; and (3)\nfinally separated and became what he is now. Science teaches us\nthat all the primitive forms, though sexless, \"still retained\nthe power of undergoing the processes of A-Sexual multiplication;\"\nwhy, then, should man be excluded from that law of Nature? Bi-sexual\nreproduction is an evolution, a specialized and perfected form\non the scale of matter of the fissiparous act of reproduction.\nOccult teachings are pre-eminently panspermic, and the early history\nof humanity is hidden only \"from ordinary mortals;\"\nnor is the history of the primitive Races buried from the Initiates\nin the tomb of time, as it is for profane science. Therefore,\nsupported on the one hand by that science which shows to us progressive\ndevelopment and an internal cause for every external modification,\nas a law in Nature; and, on the other hand, by an implicit faith\nin the wisdom -- we may say pansophia even -- of the universal\ntraditions gathered and preserved by the Initiates, who have perfected\nthem into an almost faultless system -- thus supported, we venture\nto state the doctrine clearly.\n\nIn an able article, written some fifteen years ago, our learned\nand respected friend Prof. Alex. Wilder, of New York, shows the\nabsolute logic and necessity of believing \"The Primeval Race\nDouble-Sexed,\" and gives a number of scientific reasons for\nit.* He argues firstly, \"that a large part of the vegetable\ncreation exhibits the phenomenon of bisexuality . . . the Linnaean\nclassification enumerating thus almost all plants. This is the\ncase in the superior families of the vegetable kingdoms as much\nas in the lower forms, from the Hemp to the Lombardy Poplar and\nAilanthus. In the animal kingdom, in insect life, the moth generates\na worm, as in the *Mysteries *the great secret was expressed:\n\"*Taurus Draconem genuit, et Taurum Draco.*\"*\n*The* *coral-producing family, which, according to\nAgassiz, 'has spent many hundreds of thousands of years, during\nthe present geological period, in building out the peninsula of\nFlorida . . . . produce their offspring from themselves like the\nbuds and ramifications in a tree.' Bees are somewhat in the same\nline . . . . The Aphides or plant lice keep house like Amazons,\nand *virgin parents *perpetuate the Race for ten successive\ngenerations.\"\n\nWhat say the old sages, the philosopher-teachers of antiquity.\nAristophanes speaks thus on the subject in Plato's \"*Banquet*\":*\n*\"Our* *nature of old was not the same as it is\nnow. It was *androgynous, *the* *form and name partaking\nof, and being common to both the male and female. . . . Hence Zeus *divided each of them into two, *making\nthem weaker; Apollo, under his direction, closed up the skin.\"\n\nMeshia and Meshiane were but a single individual with the old\nPersians. \"They also taught that man was the product of the\ntree of life, growing in androgynous pairs, till they were separated\nat a subsequent modification of the human form.**\"\n\nIn the *Toleduth *(generation) of Adam, the verse \"God\ncreated (*bara, *brought forth) man in his image, in the\nimage of God created he him, male and female created he them,\"\nif read esoterically will yield the true sense, viz.: \"The\n*Elohim *(Gods) brought forth from themselves (by modification)\nman in their image . . . . created they *him *(collective\nhumanity, or *Adam*),* *male and female created\n*he* (collective deity) them.\"*** This will show the\nesoteric point. The *sexless *Race was their first production,\na modification *of *and* from *themselves, the pure\nspiritual existences; and this was Adam *solus. *Thence\ncame the *second *Race: Adam-Eve or *Jod-Heva, *inactive\nandrogynes; and finally the *Third, *or the \"*Separating\n*Hermaphrodite,\" Cain and Abel, who produce the Fourth,\nSeth-Enos, etc. It is that Third, the last semi-spiritual *race*,\nwhich was also the last vehicle of the divine and innate Wisdom,\ningenerate in the Enochs, the Seers of that Mankind. The *Fourth,\n*which had tasted from the fruit of the Tree of Good and Evil\n-- Wisdom united already to earthy, and therefore *impure,\n*intelligence **** had consequently to acquire that Wisdom\nby initiation and great struggle. And the union of Wisdom and\nIntelligence, the former *ruling *the latter, is called\nin the Hermetic books \"the God possessing the double fecundity\nof the two sexes.\" Mystically Jesus was held to be man-woman.\nSee also in the *Orphic hymns, *sung during the Mysteries,\nwe find:\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Compare Ezekiel's vision (chap. i) of the four divine beings\nwho \"had the likeness of a man\" and yet had the appearance\nof a wheel, \"when they went they went upon their four sides\n. . . . for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheel.\"\n\n** See Prof. Wilder's Essay \"*The Primeval Race Double-Sexed.*\"\n\n*** Eugibinus, a Christian, and the Rabbis Samuel, Manasseh ben\nIsrael, and Maimonides taught that \"Adam had *two*\nfaces and *one* person, and from the beginning he was both\nmale and female -- male on one side and female on the other (like\nManu's Brahma), but afterwards the parts were separated.\"\nThe one hundred and thirty-ninth Psalm of David recited by Rabbi\nJeremiah ben Eliazar is evidence of this. \"Thou hast *fashioned\n*me behind and before,\" not *beset *as in the\nBible, which is absurd and meaningless, and this shows, as Prof.\nWilder thinks, \"that the primeval form of mankind was androgynous.\"\n\n**** See the union of *Chochmah, *Wisdom, with *Binah*,\nIntelligence, or Jehovah, the *Demiurge, *called* Understanding\n*in the *Proverbs of Solomon, ch. vii. *Unto men *Wisdom\n*(divine occult Wisdom) crieth: \"Oh, ye simple, understand\nWisdom; and ye *fools, be of an understanding heart.*\"*\n*It is *spirit *and *matter*, the* nous *and\nthe *psyche; *of the latter of which St. James says that\nit is \"earthly, sensual, and devilish.\"\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 135 THE VIRGIN THIRD RACE.\n\n\"Zeus is a male, Zeus is an immortal maid.\" The Egyptian\nAmmon was the goddess Neith, in his other half. Jupiter has female\nbreasts, Venus is bearded in some of her statues, and Ila, the\ngoddess, is also Su-Dyumna, the god, as Vaivasvata's progeny.\n\n\"The name *Adam,*\" says Professor A. Wilder,\n\"or man, itself implies this double form of existence. It\nis identical with *Athamas, *or* Thomas *(Tamil\n*Tam*), which is rendered by the Greek *Didumos, *a\ntwin; if, therefore, the first woman was formed subsequently to\nthe first man, she must, as a logical necessity, be 'taken out\nof man' . . . and the *side *which the *Elohim *had\ntaken from man, 'made he a woman' (*Gen. ii.*).* *The\nHebrew word here used is *Tzala, *which bears the translation\nwe have given. It is easy to trace the legend in Berosus, who\nsays that *Thalatth *(the* Omoroca, *or Lady of\nUrka) was the beginning of creation. She was also Melita, the\nqueen of the Moon. . . . The two twin births of* Genesis, *that\nof Cain and Abel, and of Esau and Jacob, shadow the same idea.\n*The name 'Hebel' is the same as Eve, *and its characteristic\nseems to be feminine,\" continues the author. \"Unto thee\nshall be his desire,\" said the Lord God to Cain, \"and\nthou shalt rule over him.\" The same language had been uttered\nto Eve: \"Thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall\nrule over thee.\" . . .\n\nThus the pristine bi-sexual unity of the human *Third *Root-Race\nis an axiom in the Secret Doctrine. Its virgin individuals were\nraised to \"Gods,\" because that Race represented their\n\"divine Dynasty.\" The moderns are satisfied with worshipping\nthe male heroes of the Fourth Race, who created gods after their\nown sexual image, whereas the gods of primeval mankind were \"male\nand female.\"\n\nAs stated in Book I, the humanities developed coordinately, and\non parallel lines with the four Elements, every new Race being\nphysiologically adapted to meet the additional element. Our Fifth\nRace is rapidly approaching the Fifth Element -- call it interstellar\nether, if you will -- which has more to do, however, with psychology\nthan with physics. We men have learned to live in every climate,\nwhether frigid or tropical, but the first two Races had nought\nto do with climate, nor were they subservient to any temperature\nor change therein. And thus, we are taught, men lived down to\nthe close of the Third Root-Race, when eternal spring reigned\nover the whole globe, such as is now enjoyed by the inhabitants\nof Jupiter; a \"world,\" says M. Flammarion, \"which\nis not subject like our own to the vicissitudes of seasons nor\nto abrupt alternations of temperature, but which is enriched with\nall the treasures of eternal spring.\" (*\"Pluralite\ndes Mondes,*\"* *p. 69.) Those astronomers who\nmaintain that Jupiter is in a molten condition, in our sense of\nthe term, are invited to settle their dispute with this learned\nFrench\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 136 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nAstronomer.* It must, however, be always borne in mind that the\n\"eternal spring\" referred to is only a condition *cognised\nas such by the Jovians. *It is not \"spring\" *as\nwe know it. *In this reservation is to be found the reconciliation\nbetween the two theories here cited. Both embrace *partial*\ntruths.\n\nIt is thus a universal tradition that mankind has evolved gradually\ninto its present shape from an almost transparent condition of\ntexture, and neither by miracle nor by sexual intercourse. Moreover,\nthis is in full accord with the ancient philosophies; from those\nof Egypt and India with their Divine Dynasties down to that of\nPlato. And all these universal beliefs must be classed with the\n\"presentiments\" and \"obstinate conceptions,\"\nsome of them ineradicable, in popular faiths. Such beliefs, as\nremarked by Louis Figuier, are \"frequently the outcome of\nthe wisdom and observation of an infinite number of generations\nof men.\" For, \"*a tradition which has an uniform\nand universal existence,*\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* An hypothesis evolved in 1881 by Mr. Mattieu Williams seems\nto have impressed Astronomers but little. Says the author of \"*The\nFuel of the Sun*,\" in *Knowledge, *Dec. 23, 1881:\n\"Applying now the researches of Dr. Andrews to the conditions\nof Solar existence . . . I conclude that the Sun has *no nucleus,\n*either solid, liquid, or gaseous, but is composed of dissociated\nmatter in the critical state, surrounded, first, by a flaming\nenvelope, due to the recombination of the dissociated matter,\nand outside of this, by another envelope of vapours due to this\ncombination.\"\n\nThis is a novel theory to be added to other hypotheses, *all\nscientific and orthodox. *The meaning of the \"*critical\n*state\" is explained by Mr. M. Williams in the same journal\n(Dec. 9, 1881), in an article on \"Solids, Liquids, and Gases.\"\nSpeaking of an experiment by Dr. Andrews on carbonic acid, the\nscientist says that \"when 88 [[degrees]] is reached, the\nboundary between liquid and gas vanished; *liquid and gas have\nblended into one mysterious intermediate fluid; an indefinite\nfluctuating something is there filling the whole of the tube --\nan etherealised liquid or a visible gas. *Hold a red-hot poker\nbetween your eye and the light; you will see an upflowing wave\nof movement of what appears like liquid air. The appearance of\nthe *hybrid* fluid in the tube resembles this, but is sensibly\ndenser, and evidently stands between the liquid and gaseous states\nof matter, as pitch or treacle stands between solid and liquid.\"\n\nThe* temperature at which this occurs has been named by Dr.\nAndrews the *\"*critical temperature*\"; here\nthe gaseous and the liquid states are \"*continuous,*\"\nand it is probable that *all other substances capable of existing\n*in both states have their own particular critical temperatures.\n\nSpeculating further upon this \"critical\" state, Mr.\nMattieu Williams emits some quite *occult* theories about\nJupiter and other planets. He says: \"*Our* *notions\nof solids, liquids, and gases are derived from our experiences\nof the state of matter here upon this Earth. Could we be removed\nto another planet, they would be curiously changed. *On Mercury\nwater would rank as one of the condensible gases; on Mars, as\na fusible solid; but what on Jupiter?\"\n\n\"Recent observations justify us in regarding this as a miniature\nsun, with an external envelope of cloudy matter, apparently of\npartially-condensed water, but red-hot, or probably still hotter\nwithin. His vaporous atmosphere is evidently of enormous depth,\nand the force of gravitation being on his visible outer surface\ntwo-and-a-half [[Footnote continued on next page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 137 EGYPTIAN BELIEF.\n\n*has all the weight of scientific testimony.*\"**\n*And there is more than one such tradition in the Puranic\nallegories, as has been shown. Moreover, the doctrine that the\nfirst Race of mankind was formed out of the *chhayas *(astral\nimages) of the Pitris, is fully corroborated in the *Zohar.\n*\"In the *Tzalam *(shadow image) of Elohim (the\nPitris), was made Adam (man). (Cremona, Ed. iii., 76*a*;\nBrody, Ed. iii., 159*a*; \"Qabbalah,\" Isaac Myer,\np. 420.)\n\nIt has been repeatedly urged as an objection that, however high\nthe degree of metaphysical thought in ancient India, yet the old\nEgyptians had nothing but crass idolatry and zoolatry to boast\nof; Hermes, as alleged, being the work of mystic Greeks who lived\nin Egypt. To this, one answer can be given -- a direct proof that\nthe Egyptians believed in the Secret Doctrine is, that it was\ntaught to them at Initiation. Let the objectors open the \"*Eclogae\nPhysicae et Ethicae*\" of *Stobaeus, *the* *Greek\ncompiler of ancient fragments, who lived in the fifth century,\n**A.D**. The following is a transcription by him of an old\nHermetic fragment, showing the Egyptian theory of the Soul. Translated\nword for word, it says: --\n\n\"From one Soul, that of ALL**, **spring all\nthe Souls, which spread themselves as if purposely distributed\nthrough the world. These souls undergo many transformations; those\nwhich are already creeping creatures turn into aquatic animals;\nfrom these aquatic animals are derived land animals; and from\nthe latter the birds. From the beings who live aloft in the air\n(heaven) men are born. On reaching that\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] times greater than that\non our Earth's surface, the atmospheric pressure, in descending\nbelow this visible surface, must soon reach that at which the\nvapour of water would be brought to its critical condition. Therefore\nwe may infer that *the oceans of Jupiter are neither of frozen,\nliquid, nor gaseous water, but are oceans or atmospheres of critical\nwater. If any fish or birds swim or fly therein, they must be\nvery critically organized.*\"\n\nAs the whole mass of Jupiter is 300 times greater than that of\nthe Earth, and its compressing energy towards the centre proportional\nto this, its materials, if similar to those of the Earth, and\nno hotter, would be considerably more dense, and the whole planet\nwould have a higher specific gravity; but we know by the movement\nof its satellites that, instead of this, its specific gravity\nis less than a fourth of that of the Earth. This justifies the\nconclusion that it is intensely hot; for even hydrogen, if cold,\nwould become denser than Jupiter under such pressure.\n\n\"As all elementary substances may exist as solids, liquids,\nor gases, or, critically, according to the conditions of temperature\nand pressure, I am justified in hypothetically concluding that\n*Jupiter is neither a solid, a liquid, nor a gaseous planet,\nbut a critical planet, or an orb composed internally of associated\nelements in the critical state, and surrounded by a dense atmosphere\nof their vapours *and those of some of their compounds such\nas water. The same reasoning applies to Saturn and other large\nand rarified planets.\"\n\nIt is gratifying to see how *scientific imagination *approaches\nevery year more closely to the borderland of our occult teachings.\n\n** *\"*The Day After Death,*\" p. 23.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 138 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nstatus of men, the Souls receive the principle of (conscious)\nimmortality, become Spirits, then pass into the choir of gods.\"\n\n--------\n\n23. **T**HE **S**ELF-**B**ORN\nWERE THE **C**HHAYAS, THE SHADOWS FROM THE BODIES\nOF THE SONS OF TWILIGHT. **N**EITHER WATER NOR FIRE\nCOULD DESTROY THEM. **T**HEIR SONS WERE (*so destroyed*)\n(*a*).\n\n(*a*) This verse cannot be understood without the help\nof the Commentaries. It means that the First Root-Race, the \"Shadows\"\nof the Progenitors, could not be injured, or destroyed by death.\nBeing so ethereal and so little human in constitution, they could\nnot be affected by any element -- flood or fire. But their \"Sons,\"\nthe Second Root-Race, could be and were so destroyed. As the \"progenitors\"\nmerged wholly in their own astral bodies, which were their progeny;\nso that progeny was absorbed in its descendants, the \"Sweat-born.\"\nThese were the second Humanity -- composed of the most heterogeneous\ngigantic semi-human monsters -- the first attempts of material\nnature at building human bodies. The ever-blooming lands of the\nSecond Continent (Greenland, among others) were transformed, in\norder, from Edens with their eternal spring, into hyperborean\nHades. This transformation was due to the displacement of the\ngreat waters of the globe, to oceans changing their beds; and\nthe bulk of the Second Race perished in this first great throe\nof the evolution and consolidation of the globe during the human\nperiod. Of such great cataclysms there have already been four.*\nAnd we may expect a fifth for ourselves in due course of time.\n\n-------\n\n**A** **F**EW **W**ORDS\nABOUT \"**D**ELUGES\" AND \"**N**OAHS.\"\n\nThe accounts in the various Puranas about our Progenitors are\nas contradictory *in their details *as everything else.\nThus while, *in the Rig Veda, *Ida (or Ila) is called the\nInstructress of Vaivasvata Manu, Sayana makes of her a goddess\npresiding over the Earth, and the Sathapatha Brahmana shows her\nto be the Manu's daughter, an *offering of his sacrifice, *and,\nlater on, his (Vaivasvata's) *wife, by whom he begat the race\nof Manus. *In the Puranas, again, she is Vaivasvata's daughter,\nyet the wife of Budha (Wisdom), the illegitimate son of the Moon\n(Soma) and the planet Jupiter's (*Brihhaspati's*) wife,\nTara. All this, which seems a jumble to the profane, is full of\nphilosophical meaning to the Occultist. On the very face of the\nnarrative a secret and sacred meaning is per-\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n*The first occurred when what is now the North Pole was separated\nfrom the later Continents.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 139 WHAT THE FLOOD MEANS.\n\nceivable, all the details, however, being so purposely mixed up\nthat the experienced eye of an Initiate alone can follow them\nand place the events in their proper order.\n\nThe story as told in the \"Mahabharata\" strikes the key-note,\nand yet it needs to be explained by the secret sense contained\nin the Bhagavad Gita. It is the *prologue to the drama *of\nour (Fifth) Humanity. While Vaivasvata was engaged in devotion\non the river bank, a fish craves his protection from a bigger\nfish. He saves and places it in a jar, where, growing larger and\nlarger, it communicates to him the news of the forthcoming deluge.\nIt is the well-known \"Matsya Avatar,\" the first Avatar\nof Vishnu, the *Dagon* *of the Chaldean Xisuthrus, and\nmany other things besides. The story is too well known to need\nrepetition. Vishnu orders a ship to be built, in which Manu is\nsaid to be saved along with the seven Rishis, the latter, however,\nbeing absent from other texts. Here the seven Rishis stand for\nthe *seven Races, *the seven principles, and various other\nthings; for there is again a double mystery involved in this manifold\nallegory.\n\nWe have said elsewhere that the great Flood had several meanings,\nand that it referred, as also does the FALL, to both spiritual\nand physical, cosmic and terrestrial, events: as above, so it\nis below. The ship or ark -- *navis *-- in short, being\nthe symbol of the female generative principle, is typified in\nthe heavens by the Moon, and on Earth by the Womb: both being\nthe vessels and bearers of the seeds of life and being, which\nthe sun, or Vishnu, the male principle, vivifies and fructifies.**\nThe First Cosmic Flood refers to primordial creation, or the formation\nof Heaven and the Earths; in which case Chaos and the great Deep\nstand for the \"Flood,\" and the Moon for the \"Mother,\"\nfrom whom proceed all the life-germs.*** But the terrestrial Deluge\nand\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* We must remember that at the head of all the Babylonian gods\nwere *Ea,* Anu, and the primeval Bel; and that *Ea,*\nthe first, was the God of Wisdom, the great \"God of Light\"\nand of the DEEP, and that he was identified with Oannes, or the\nBiblical Dagon -- the man-fish who rose out of the Persian Gulf.\n\n** See Part. II. § \"*The Holy of Holies*.\"\n\n*** It is far later on that the Moon became a male god; with the\nHindus it was Soma, with the Chaldeans Nannak or Nannar, and Sin,\nthe son of Mulil, the older Bel. The \"Akkadians\" called\nhim the \"Lord of Ghosts\"; and he was the god of Nipoor\n(Niffer) in northern Babylonia. It is Mulil who caused the waters\nof the Flood to fall from heaven on Earth, for which Xisuthrus\nwould not allow him to approach his altar. As the modern Assyriologists\nhave now ascertained, it is the northern Nipoor which is the centre\nwhence Chaldean (black) magic spread; and Eridu (the Southern)\nwhich was the primitive seat of the worship of the culture god,\nthe god of divine wisdom -- the Sun-God being the supreme deity\neverywhere. With the Jews, the Moon is connected with Israel's\nJehovah and his seed, because Ur was the chief seat of the worship\nof the Moon-god, and because Abraham is said to have come from\nUr, when from A-bra(h)m, he becomes Abraham.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 140 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nits story has also its dual application. In one case it has reference\nto that mystery when mankind was saved from utter destruction,\nby the mortal woman being made the receptacle of the human seed\nat the end of the Third Race,* and in the other to the real and\nhistorical Atlantean submersion. In both cases the \"Host\"\n-- or the Manu which saved the *seed -- *is called Vaivasvata\nManu. Hence the diversity between the Puranic and other versions;\nwhile in the Sathapatha Brahmana, Vaivasvata produces a daughter\nand begets from her the race of Manu; which is a reference to\nthe first human *Manushyas, *who* *had to create\nwomen by will (*Kriyasakti*),* *before they were\nnaturally born from the hermaphrodites as an independent sex,\nand who were, therefore, regarded as their creator's *daughters.\n*The Puranic accounts make of her (*Ida *or* Ila*)\nthe wife of Budha (Wisdom), the latter version referring to the\nevents of the Atlantean flood, when Vaivasvata, the great Sage\non Earth, saved the Fifth Root-race from being destroyed along\nwith the remnants of the Fourth.\n\nThis is shown very clearly in the *Bhagavad Gita, *where\nKrishna is made to say: --\n\n\"The Seven great Rishis, the *four preceding Manus, *partaking\nof my essence, were born from my mind: from them sprung (were\nborn) the human races and the world.\" (*Chapter X., verse*\n6).\n\nHere the four preceding \"Manus,\" out of the seven, are\nthe four Races** which have already lived, since Krishna belongs\nto the Fifth Race, his death having inaugurated the Kali Yuga.\nThus Vaivasvata\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* When Narada, the virgin-ascetic, threatened to put an end to\nthe human race by preventing Daksha's sons from procreating it.\n\n** This is corroborated by a learned Brahmin. In his most excellent\nlectures on the Bhagavad Gita (*see \"Theosophist,\"\nApril, *1887,* p.* 444) the lecturer says: \"There\nis a peculiarity to which I must call your attention. He (Krishna)\nspeaks here of four Manus. Why does he speak of four? We are now\nin the seventh Manvantara, that of Vaivasvata. If he is speaking\nof the past Manus, he ought to speak of six, but he only mentions\nfour. In some commentaries an attempt has been made to interpret\nthis in a peculiar manner. The word 'Chatvaraha' is separated\nfrom the word 'Manavaha,' and is made to refer to Sanaka, Sanandana,\nSanatkumara, and Sanatsujata, who are also included among the\nmind-born sons of Prajapati. But this interpretation will lead\nto a most absurd conclusion, and make the sentence contradict\nitself. The persons alluded to in the text have a qualifying clause\nin the sentence. It is well known that Sanaka and the other three\nrefused to create, though the other sons had consented to do so;\ntherefore, in speaking of those persons from whom humanity has\nsprung into existence, it would be absurd to include those four\nalso in the list. The passage must be interpreted without splitting\nthe compound into two nouns. The number of Manus will then be\nfour, and the statement would then contradict the Puranic account,\nthough it would be in harmony with the occult theory. You will\nrecollect that it is stated (in Occultism) that we are now in\nthe Fifth Root-Race. Each Root-Race is considered as the *Santhathi\n*of a particular Manu. Now, the Fourth Race has passed, or,\nin other words, there have been four past Manus. . . . . \"\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 141 VARIOUS DELUGES.\n\nManu, the son of Surya (the Sun), and the saviour of our Race,\nis connected with the *Seed of Life, *both physically and\nspiritually. But, at present, while speaking of all, we have to\nconcern ourselves only with the first two.\n\nThe \"Deluge\" is undeniably an *universal tradition.\n*\"Glacial periods\" were numerous, and so were the\n\"Deluges,\" for various reasons. Stockwell and Croll\nenumerate some half dozen Glacial Periods and subsequent Deluges\n-- the earliest of all being dated by them 850,000, and the last\nabout 100,000, years ago.* But which was *our *Deluge?\nAssuredly the former, the one which to this date remains recorded\nin the traditions of all the peoples, from the remotest antiquity;\nthe one that finally swept away the last peninsulas of Atlantis,\nbeginning with Ruta and Daitya and ending with the (comparatively)\nsmall island mentioned by Plato. This is shown by the agreement\nof certain details in all the legends. It was the last of its\ngigantic character. The little deluge, the traces of which Baron\nBunsen found in Central Asia, and which he places at about 10,000\nyears **B.C.**, had nothing to do with either the\nsemi-universal Deluge, or Noah's flood -- the latter being a purely\nmythical rendering of old traditions -- nor even with the submersion\nof the last Atlantean island; at least, only a moral connection.\n\nOur Fifth Race (the non-initiated portions), hearing of many deluges,\nconfused them, and now know of but one. This one altered the whole\naspect of the globe in its interchange and shifting of land and\nsea.\n\nWe may compare the traditions of the Peruvians: -- \"The Incas,\n*seven *in number, have repeopled the Earth after the deluge,\"\nthey say* (Coste *I,* IV., p. *19); Humboldt mentions\nthe Mexican version of the same legend, but confuses somewhat\nthe details of the still-preserved legend concerning the American\nNoah. Nevertheless, the eminent Naturalist mentions *twice\nseven *companions and the *divine bird *which preceded\nthe boat of the Aztecs, and thus makes fifteen elect instead of\nthe seven and the fourteen. This was written probably under some\ninvoluntary reminiscence of Moses, who is said to have mentioned\nfifteen grandsons of Noah, who escaped with their grandsire. Then\nagain Xisuthrus, the Chaldean Noah, is saved and translated *alive\n*to heaven -- like Enoch -- with the seven gods, the *Kabirim,\n*or the seven divine Titans; again the Chinese *Yao *has*\nseven *figures which sail with him and which he will *animate\n*when he lands, and use for \"human seed.\" Osiris,\nwhen he enters the ark, or solar boat, takes *seven *Rays\nwith him, etc., etc.\n\nSanchoniathon makes the *Aletae *or Titans (the Kabirim)\ncontemporary\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* \"*Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge,*\"\nxviii*.; *\"*American Journal of Science,*\"*\n*III., xi., 456; and Croll's *\"Climate and Time.*\"*\n*Lemuria was not submerged by a flood, but was destroyed by\nvolcanic action, and afterwards sank.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 142 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nwith Agruerus, the great Phoenician god (whom Faber sought to\nidentify with Noah*); further, it is suspected that the name of\n\"Titan\" is derived from *Tit-Ain* -- \"the\nfountains of the chaotic abyss\"** (Tit-Theus, or Tityus is\n\"the *divine deluge*\");* *and thus the\nTitans, who are *seven, *are shown to be connected with\nthe Flood and the seven Rishis saved by Vaivasvata Manu.***\n\nThey are the sons of Kronos (Time) and Rhea (the Earth); and as\nAgruerus, Saturn and Sydyk are one and the same personage, and\nas the seven Kabiri are said to be the sons of Sydyk or Kronos-Saturn,\nthe Kabiri and Titans are identical. For once the pious Faber\nwas right in his conclusions when he wrote: \"I have no doubt\nof the seven Titans and Kabiri being the same as the seven Rishis\nof the Hindu *mythology *(?)*, *who are said to\nhave escaped in a boat along with Manu, the head (?) of the family.\"\n\nBut he is less fortunate in his speculations when he adds \"The\nHindoos, in their *wild *legends have *variously perverted\nthe history of the Noachidae *(? !), yet it is remarkable\nthat they seem to have religiously adhered to the number seven.\"****\nHence Captain (Col.) Wilford very judiciously observes: that \"Perhaps\nthe seven Manus, the seven Brahmadicas and the seven Rishis are\nthe same, and make only seven individual persons.***** The seven\nBrahmadicas were Prajapatis, or lords 'of the prajas or creatures.'\nFrom them mankind was born, and they are probably the same with\nthe seven Manus. . . . According to Orpheus the names of the seven \"Arkite\"\nTitans (whom Faber refuses to identify with the *impious *Titans,\ntheir descendants) were Koeus, Kroeus, Phorcys, Kronos, Oceanus,\nHyperion, and *Iapetus:* --\n\n[[*Koion te, Kroion te melan, Phorkun te krataion,\n\nKai Kronon, Okeanon d, 'Huperioa te Iapeponet.*]]\n\n*--* (*Orph. apud Proclum. In Tim. lib. v. p. *295.\n\nBut why could not the Babylonian Ezra have adopted the name of\n*Iapetos *for one of Noah's sons? The Kabiri, who are the\nTitans, are also called Manes and their mother Mania, according\nto Arnobius. (*Adversum Gentes, lib. III., p. *124.) The\nHindus can therefore claim with far more reason that the Manes\nmean their Manus, and that Mania is the *female *Manu.\n(See *Ramayana*.) Mania is Ila or Ida, the wife and daughter\nof Vaivasvata Manu, from whom \"he begat the race of Manus.\"\nLike *Rhea, *the mother of the Titans, she is the Earth\n(Sayana making her the goddess of the Earth), and she is but the\nsecond edition and repetition of Vach. Both *Ida* and*\nVach *are turned into males and females; Ida becoming Sudyumna,\nand Vach, \"the female Viraj,\" turning into a woman in\norder to punish the Gandharvas; one version referring to cosmic\nand divine theogony, the other to the later period. The* Manes\n*and Mania of Arnobius are names of Indian origin, appropriated\nby the Greeks and Latins and disfigured by them.\n\nThus it is no accident, but the result of one archaic doctrine\ncommon to all, of which the Israelites, through Ezra, the author\nof the modernised Mosaic books, were the latest adapters. So unceremonious\nwere they with other people's property, that Berosus (*Antiquitates\nLibyae,* I, *fol. *8), shows that *Titea -- *of\nwhom Diodorus makes the mother of the Titans or *Diluvians\n*(*See Bibl. lib. III. p. *170) -- was the *wife\nof Noah. *For this Faber calls him the \"*pseudo-Berosus,*\"*\n*yet accepts the information in order to register one proof\nmore that the pagans have borrowed all their gods from the Jews,\nby transforming patriarchal material. According to our humble\nopinion, this is one of the best proofs possible of exactly the\nreverse. It shows as clearly as facts can show, that it is the\nBiblical *pseudo*-personages which are all borrowed from\npagan myths, if myths they must be. It shows, at any rate, that\nBerosus was well aware of the source of *Genesis, *and\nthat it bore the same cosmic astronomical character as the allegories\nof Isis-Osiris, and the Ark, and other older \"Arkite\"\nsymbols. For, Berosus says that \"Titea magna\" was afterwards\ncalled *Aretia,* *and worshipped with the Earth; and this\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n*Aretia is the female form of Artes (Egyptian Mars). Thence the\nChaldean (and now Hebrew) word\n(*Aretz*)* *\"Earth.\" The author of *\"Beitrage\nzur Kenntniss\" (Art. under \"Artes\" Mars*)*\nquotes: \"Addit Cedrenus *(*Salem I.*, 3):*\nStella Martis ab* [[Footnote continued on next page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 144 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nidentifies \"Titea,\" Noah's consort, with *Rhea, *the\nmother of the Titans, and with *Ida -*- both being goddesses\nwho preside over the Earth, and the mothers of the Manus and Manes\n(or Tit-an-Kabiri). And \"Titea-Aretia\" was worshipped\nas *Horchia, *says the same Berosus, and this is a title\nof Vesta, goddess of the Earth. \"*Sicanus deificavit Aretiam,\net nominavit eam lingua Janigena Horchiam.*\"* *(*Ibid.\nlib. V. fol. *64.)\n\nScarce an ancient poet of historic or prehistoric days who failed\nto mention the sinking of the two continents -- often called isles\n-- in one form or another. Hence the destruction, besides Atlantis,\nof the Phlegyae. (See Pausanias and Nonus, who both tell how:\n\n\"From its deep-rooted base the Phlegyan isle\n\nStern Neptune shook, and plunged beneath the waves\n\nIts impious inhabitants. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .\"\n\n*-- Dionysius lib xviii. p. *319).\n\nFaber felt convinced that the \"insulae Phlegyae\" were\nAtlantis. But all such allegories are more or less distorted echoes\nof the Hindu tradition about that great Cataclysm, which befell\nthe Fourth, really human, though gigantic, Race, the one which\npreceded the Aryan. Yet, as just said, like all other legends,\nthat of \"the Deluge has more than one meaning. It refers\nin Theogony, to *pre-cosmic transformations,* to *spiritual\ncorrelations -- *however* *absurd the term may sound\nto a scientific ear -- and also to subsequent Cosmogony; to the\ngreat FLOOD of WATERS (matter) in CHAOS, awakened and fructified\nby those Spirit-Rays which were swamped by, and *perished *in,\nthe mysterious differentiation -- a pre-cosmic mystery, the Prologue\nto the drama of Being. Anu, Bel, and Noah preceded Adam Kadmon,\nAdam the Red, and Noah; just as Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva preceded\nVaivasvata and the rest.\" (See \"*Isis Unveiled.,*\"*\n*Vol*. *II., pp. 420 *et seq., *where one or\ntwo of the seven meanings are hinted at.)\n\nAll this goes to show that the *semi*-universal deluge\nknown to geology (first glacial period) must have occurred just\nat the time allotted to it by the Secret Doctrine: namely, 200,000\nyears (in round numbers) after the commencement of our FIFTH RACE,\nor about the time assigned by Messrs. Croll and Stockwell for\nthe first glacial period: *i.e.*, about 850,000 years ago.\nThus, as the latter disturbance is attributed by geologists and\nastronomers to \"an extreme eccentricity of the Earth's\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] *Egyptiis vocatur\nErtosi (plantare, generare). Significat autem hoc omnis generis\nprocreationem et vivificationem, omnisque substantiae et materiae\nnaturam et vim ordinantem atque procreantem.*\"* *It\nis Earth as \"source of being\"; or, as explained by the\nauthor of \"The Source of Measures,\" Arts is the same\nin *Hebrew *and *Egyptian,* and both combine the\nprimeval idea of *Earth as source; *precisely as in the\nHebrew itself, under another form, *Adam* and *Madim,\n*(Mars) are the same, and combine the idea of Earth with Adam\nunder the form of *H-Adam-H.*\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 145 THE JEWISH NOAH AND THE CHALDEAN NUAH.\n\norbit,\" and as the Secret Doctrine attributes it to the same\nsource, but with the addition of another factor, the shifting\nof the Earth's axis -- a proof of which may be found in the *Book\nof Enoch,* *if the veiled language of the Puranas is not understood\n-- all this should tend to show that the ancients knew something\nof the \"modern discoveries\" of Science. Enoch, when\nspeaking of \"the great inclination of the Earth,\" which\n\"is in travail,\" is quite significant and clear.\n\nIs not this evident? Nuah is Noah, *floating *on the waters\nin his ark; the latter being the emblem of the Argha, or Moon,\nthe feminine principle; Noah is the \"spirit\" falling\ninto matter. We find him, as soon as he descends upon the Earth,\nplanting a vineyard, drinking of the wine, and getting drunk on\nit, *i.e., *the pure spirit becomes intoxicated as soon\nas it is finally imprisoned in matter. The seventh chapter of\n*Genesis *is only another version of the First. Thus, while\nthe latter reads: \"and darkness was upon the face of the\ndeep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters,\"\nin ch. 7 it is said \" . . . and the waters prevailed . .\n. and the ark went (with Noah, the spirit) upon the face of the\nwaters.\" Thus Noah, if identical with the Chaldean Nuah,\nis the spirit vivifying *matter, *which latter is Chaos,\nrepresented by the **D**EEP, or the Waters of the\nFlood. In the Babylonian legend (the pre-cosmical blended with\nthe terrestrial event) it is Ishtar (Astaroth or Venus, the lunar\ngoddess) who is shut up in the ark and sends out \"a *dove\n*in search of dry land.\" (\"*Isis Unveiled*\"*\nVol. *II, *pp.* 423* and* 424)*.*\n\nGeorge Smith notes in the \"*Tablets*,\"* *first\nthe creation of the moon, and then that of the sun: \"Its\nbeauty and perfection are extolled, and the regularity of its\norbit, which led to its being considered the type of a judge and\nthe regulator of the world.\" If this story related simply\nto a cosmogonical cataclysm -- even were this latter universal\n-- why should the goddess Ishtar or Astoreth, the Moon, speak\nof the *creation of the sun *after the deluge? The waters\nmight have reached as high as the mountain of *Nizir *(Chaldean\nversion), or Jebel Djudi (the deluge mountains of the Arabian\nlegend), or yet Ararat (of the Biblical narrative), and even the\nHimalaya (of the Hindu tradition), and yet not reach the sun:\nthe Bible itself stopped short of such a miracle! It is evident\nthat the deluge of the people who first recorded it had another\nmeaning, less problematical and far more philosophical than that\nof an *universal *deluge, of which there are no geological\ntraces whatever.\n\nAs all such Cataclysms are periodical and cyclical, and as Manu\nVaivasvata figures as a *generic *character, under various\ncircumstances and events (*vide infra: \"The Seven Manus\nof Humanity*\"),* *there seems to be no\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Chap. lxiv., Sect. xi.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 146 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nserious objection to the supposition that the first \"great\nflood\" had an allegorical, as well as a cosmic meaning, and\nthat it happened at the end of the Satya Yuga, the \"age of\nTruth,\" when the *Second *Root Race, \"The Manu\nwith bones,\" made its primeval appearance as \"the Sweat-Born.\"*\n\nThe Second Flood -- the so-called \"universal\" -- which\naffected the Fourth Root Race (now conveniently regarded by theology\nas \"the accursed race of giants,\" the **C**AINITES,\nand \"the sons of Ham\") is that flood which was first\nperceived by geology. If one carefully compares the accounts in\nthe various legends of the Chaldees and other exoteric works of\nthe nations, it will be found that all of them agree with the\northodox narratives given in the Brahmanical books. And it may\nbe perceived that while, in the first account, \"there is\nno God or mortal yet on Earth,\" when Manu Vaivasvata lands\non the Himavan; in the second, the Seven Rishis are allowed to\nkeep him company: thus showing that whereas some accounts refer\nto the sidereal and cosmic **F**LOOD before the so-called\ncreation, the others treat, one of the Great Flood of Matter on\nEarth, and the other of a real watery deluge. In the *Satapatha\nBrahmana, *Manu finds that \"the Flood had swept away\nall living creatures, and he alone was left\" -- *i.e.,\nthe seed of life *alone remained from the previous dissolution\nof the *Universe, *or *Mahapralaya, *after* *a\n\"Day of Brahma\"; and the *Mahabharata *refers\nsimply to the geological cataclysm which swept away nearly all\nthe Fourth Race to make room for the Fifth. Therefore is Vaivasvata\nManu shown under three distinct attributes in our esoteric Cosmogony:**\n(*a*) as the \"Root-Manu\"\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* All such expressions are explained in the \"*Anthropogenesis*\"*\n*of this Book, and elsewhere.\n\n** One has to remember that, in the Hindu philosophy, every differentiated\nunit is such only through the cycles of Maya, being one in its\nessence with the Supreme or One Spirit. Hence arises the seeming\nconfusion and contradiction in the various Puranas, and at times\nin the same Purana, about the same individual. Vishnu -- as the\nmany-formed Brahma, and as Brahma (neuter) -- is one, and yet\nhe is said to be all the 28 Vyasas (*Vishnu Purana*)*.\n*\"In every Dvapara (third) age, *Vishnu, in the person\nof Vyasa, *divides the Veda, which is one, into four and many\nportions. III.) \"This world is Brahma in Brahma, from\nBrahma . . . nothing further to be known.\" Then, again .\n. . \"There were in the First Manvantara seven celebrated\nsons of Vasishta, who in the *Third* Manvantara, were sons\nof Brahma (*i.e*., Rishis), the illustrious progeny of\nUrja.\" This is plain: the Humanity of the First Manvantara\nis that of the seventh and of all the intermediate ones. The mankind\nof the First Root-Race is the mankind of the *second, third,\nfourth, fifth*, etc. To the last it forms a cyclic and constant\nreincarnation of the Monads belonging to the Dhyan Chohans of\nour Planetary chain.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 147 AGREEMENT OF DATES.\n\non Globe A in the First Round; (*b*) as the \"*seed\n*of life\" on Globe D in the Fourth Round; and (*c*)\nas the \"Seed of Man\" at the beginning of every Root-Race\n-- in our Fifth Race especially. The very commencement of the\nlatter witnesses, during the Dvapara Yuga,* the destruction of\nthe accursed sorcerers; \"of that island (Plato speaking only\nof its last island) beyond the Pillars of Hercules, in the Atlantic\nOcean, from which there was an easy transition to other islands\nin the neighbourhood of another *large Continent*\"\n(America). It is this \"Atlantic\" land which was connected\nwith the \"*White Island,*\"* *and this\nWhite Island was Ruta; but it was not the Atala and the* \"White\nDevil*\"* *of Colonel Wilford (*see \"Asiatic\nResearches,\" Vol. VIII., p. *280), as already shown.\nIt may well be remarked here that the Dvapara Yuga lasts 864,000\nyears, according to the Sanskrit texts; and that, if the *Kali\nYuga *began only about 5,000 years ago, that it is just 869,000\nsince that destruction took place. Again, these figures are not\nvery widely different from those given by the geologists, who\nplace their \"glacial period\" 850,000 years ago.\n\nThen \"a woman was produced who came to Manu and declared\n*herself his daughter, with whom he lived and begat the offspring\nof Manu*.\"* *This refers to the physiological\ntransformation of sexes during the Third Root-Race. And the allegory\nis too transparently clear to need much explanation. Of course,\nas already remarked, in the separation of sexes an androgyne being\nwas supposed to divide his body into two halves (as in the case\nof Brahma and Vach, and even of Adam and Eve), and thus the female\nis, in a certain sense, his daughter, just as he will be her son,\n\"the flesh of his (and her) flesh and the bone of his (and\nher) bone.\" Let it be also well remembered that not one of\nour Orientalists have yet learned to discern in those \"contradictions\nand amazing nonsense,\" as some call the Puranas, that a reference\nto a Yuga may mean a Round, a Root-Race, and often a *Sub-Race,\n*as well as form a page torn out of pre-cosmic theogony. This\ndouble and triple meaning is proved by various references to one\nand the same individual apparently, under an identical name, while\nit refers, in fact, to events divided by entire Kalpas. A good\ninstance is that of Ila. She is first represented as one thing\nand then as another. In the exoteric legends it is said that Manu\nVaivasvata, desiring to create sons, instituted a sacrifice to\nMitra and Varuna; but, through a mistake of the officiating\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The Dvapara Yuga differs for each Race. All races have their\nown cycles, which fact causes a great difference. Then, \"through\nthe favour of the gods,\" her *sex is changed *and\nshe becomes a man, *Su-dyumna. *Then she is again turned\ninto a woman, and so on; the fable adding that Siva and his consort\nwere pleased that \"she would be male one month and female\nanother.\" This has a direct reference to the Third Root-Race,\nwhose men were androgynes. But some very learned Orientalists\nthink (*see *\"*Hindu Classical Dictionary*\")*\n*and have declared that \"Ila was primarily food, nourishment,\nor a libation of milk; thence a stream of praise, personified\nas the goddess of speech.\" The \"profane\" are not\ntold, however, the reason why \"a libation of milk,\"\nor \"a stream of praise,\" should be *male *and*\nfemale *by turn: unless, indeed there is some \"internal\nevidence\" which the occultists fail to perceive.\n\nIn their most mystical meanings, the union of Swayambhuva Manu\nwith Vach-Sata-Rupa, his own daughter (this being the first \"euhemerization\"\nof the dual principle of which Vaivasvata Manu and Ila are a secondary\nand a third form), stands in Cosmic symbolism as the Root-life,\nthe germ from which spring all the Solar Systems, the worlds,\nangels and the gods. For, as says Vishnu: --\n\n\"From Manu all creation, gods, Asuras, man must be produced,\n\nBy him the world must be created, that which moves and moveth\nnot. . . . .\"\n\nBut we may find worse opponents than even the Western Scientists\nand Orientalists. If, on the question of figures, Brahmins may\nagree with our teaching, we are not so sure that some of them,\northodox conservatives, may not raise objections to the modes\nof procreation attributed to their *Pitar Devatas. *We\nshall be called upon to produce the works from which we quote,\nwhile they will be invited by us to read their own Puranas a little\nmore carefully and with an eye to the esoteric meaning. And then,\nwe repeat again, they will find, under the veil of more or less\ntransparent allegories, every statement made herein corroborated\nby their own works. One or two instances have already been given\nas regards the appearance of the Second Race, which is called\nthe \"Sweat-Born.\" This allegory is regarded as a fairy-tale,\nand yet it conceals a psycho-physiological phenomenon, and one\nof the greatest mysteries of Nature.\n\nBut in view of the chronological statements made herein, it is\nnatural to ask: --\n\n##### COULD MEN EXIST\n18,000,000 YEARS AGO?\n\nTo this Occultism answers in the affirmative, notwithstanding\nall scientific objectors. Moreover, this duration covers only\nthe Vaivasvata-Manu *Man, i.e., *the male and female entity\nalready separated into\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 149 HOW OLD IS HUMANITY?\n\ndistinct sexes. The two and a half Races that preceded that event\nmay have lived 300,000,000 years ago for all that science can\ntell. For the geological and physical difficulties in the way\nof the theory could not exist for the *primeval, ethereal *man\nof the Occult teachings. *The whole issue of the quarrel between\nthe profane and the esoteric sciences depends upon the belief\nin, and demonstration of, the existence of an astral body within\nthe physical, *the former independent of the latter. Paul\nd'Assier, the Positivist, seems to have proven the fact pretty\nplainly,* not to speak of the accumulated testimony of the ages,\nand that of the modern spiritualists and mystics. It will be found\ndifficult to reject this fact in our age of proofs, tests, and\nocular demonstrations.\n\nThe Secret Doctrine maintains that, notwithstanding the general\ncataclysms and disturbances of our globe, which -- owing to its\nbeing the period of its greatest physical development, for the\nFourth Round is the middle-point of the life allotted to it --\nwere far more terrible and intense than during any of the three\npreceding Rounds (the cycles of its earlier psychic and spiritual\nlife and of its semi-ethereal conditions) physical Humanity has\nexisted upon it for the last 18,000,000 years.** This period was\npreceded by 300,000,000 years of the mineral and vegetable development.\nTo this, all those who refuse to accept the theory of a \"boneless,\"\npurely ethereal, man, will object. Science, which knows only of\n*physical* organisms, will feel indignant; and materialistic\ntheology still more so. The first will object on logical and reasonable\ngrounds, based on the preconception that all animate organisms\nhave always existed on the same plane of materiality in all the\nages; the last on a tissue of most absurd fictions. The ridiculous\nclaim usually brought forward by theologians, is based on the\nvirtual assumption that mankind (read Christians) on this planet\nhave the honour of being the only human beings in the whole Kosmos,\nwho dwell on a globe, and that they are consequently, the best\nof their kind.***\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* \"*Posthumous Humanity*\"* -*- translated\nby H. They\nmaintain, on their side, that, during those periods when there\nmust have been insufferable heat, even at the two poles, successive\nfloods, upheaval of the valleys and constant shifting of the great\nwaters and seas, none of these circumstances could form an impediment\nto human life and organization, such *as is assigned by them\nto the early mankind. *Neither the heterogeneity of ambient\nregions, full of deleterious gases, nor the perils of a crust\nhardly consolidated, could prevent the First and Second Races\nfrom making their appearance even during the Carboniferous, or\nthe Silurian age itself.\n\nThus the *Monads *destined to animate future Races were\nready for the new transformation. They had passed their phases\nof immetalization, of plant and animal life, from the lowest to\nthe highest, and were waiting for their human, more intelligent\nform. Yet, what could the plastic modellers do but follow the\nlaws of evolutionary Nature? Could they, as claimed by the Biblical\ndead-letter, form \"Lord-God\"-like, or as Pygmalion in\nthe Greek allegory, Adam-Galatea out of volcanic dust, and breathe\na *living soul *into Man? No: because the soul was already\nthere, latent in its *Monad, *and needed but a *coating.\n*Pygmalion, who fails to *animate his statue, *and\nBahak-Zivo of the Nazarean Gnostics, who fails to construct \"a\nhuman soul in the creature,\" are, as conceptions, far more\nphilosophical and scientific than Adam, taken in the dead-letter\nsense, or the Biblical Elohim-Creators. Esoteric philosophy, which\nteaches spontaneous generation -- after the Sishta and Prajapati\nhave thrown the seed of life on the Earth -- shows the lower angels\nable to *construct physical *man only, even with the help\nof Nature, after having evolved the ethereal form out of themselves,\nand leaving the physical form to evolve gradually from its ethereal,\nor what would now be called, *protoplasmic* model.\n\nThis will again be objected to: \"Spontaneous Generation\"\nis an exploded theory, we shall be told. Pasteur's experiments\ndisposed of it twenty years ago, and Professor Tyndall is against\nit. Well, suppose he is? He ought to know that, should spontaneous\ngeneration\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] of life, all the realm\nand dwelling of intelligent creatures endowed with will, subject\nto law and capable of free-will; then, it would become extravagant\nto think that our world should have been the subject of God's\nfavours and His special interference, of His communications and\nHis *personal visit*. . . . . . . Can the Earth presume\nto be considered the centre of the moral and religious Universe,\nhe asks, if it has not the slightest distinction to rely upon\nin the physical Universe? Is it not as absurd to uphold such an\nassertion (of the plurality of inhabited worlds), as it would\nbe to-day to uphold the old hypothesis of Ptolemy, who placed\nEarth in the centre of our system? . . . The above is quoted from\nmemory, yet *almost textually. *The author fails to see\nthat he is bursting his own soap-bubble with such a defence.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 151 SPONTANEOUS GENERATION.\n\nbe indeed proven impossible in our present world-period and actual\nconditions -- which the Occultists deny -- still it would be no\ndemonstration that it could not have taken place under different\ncosmic conditions, not only in the seas of the Laurentian period,\nbut even on the then convulsed Earth. It would be interesting\nto know how Science could ever account for the appearance of species\nand life on Earth, especially of *Man, *once that she rejects\nboth the Biblical teachings and spontaneous generation. Pasteur's\nobservations, however, are far from being perfect or proven. Blanchard\nand Dr. Lutaud reject their importance and show that they have\nnone. The question is so far left *sub judice, *as well\nas that other one \"when, at what period, life appeared on\nthe Earth?\" As to the idea that Haeckel's Moneron -- a pinch\nof salt! -- has solved the problem of the origin of life, it is\nsimply absurd. Those materialists, who feel inclined to pooh-pooh\nthe theory of the \"Self-existent,\" the \"Self-born\nheavenly man,\" represented as an ethereal, astral man, must\nexcuse even a tyro in Occultism laughing, in his turn, at some\nspeculations of modern thought. After proving most learnedly that\nthe primitive speck of *protoplasm *(moneron) is neither\nanimal nor plant, but both, and that it *has no ancestors *among\neither of these, since it is that moneron which serves as a point\nof departure for all organized existence, we are finally told\nthat *the Monera are their own ancestors. *This may be\nvery scientific, but it is very metaphysical also; too much so,\neven for the Occultist.\n\nIf spontaneous generation has changed its methods now, owing perhaps\nto accumulated material on hand, so as to almost escape detection,\nit was in full swing in the genesis of terrestrial life. Even\nthe simple physical form and the evolution of species show how\nNature proceeds. The scale-bound, gigantic sauria, the winged\npterodactyl, the Megalosaurus, and the hundred-feet long Iguanodon\nof the later period, are the transformations of the earliest representatives\nof the animal kingdom found in the sediments of the primary epoch.\nThere was a time when all those above enumerated \"antediluvian\"\nmonsters appeared as filamentoid infusoria without shell or crust,\nwith neither nerves, muscles, organs nor sex, and reproduced their\nkind by gemmation: as do microscopical animals also, the architects\nand builders of our mountain ranges, agreeably to the teachings\nof science. Why not man in this case? Why should he not have followed\nthe same law in his growth, *i.e.*, gradual condensation?\nEvery unprejudiced person would prefer to believe that primeval\nhumanity had at first an ethereal -- or, if so preferred, a huge\nfilamentoid, jelly-like form, evolved by gods or natural \"forces,\"\nwhich grew, condensed throughout millions of ages, and became\ngigantic in its physical impulse and tendency, until it settled\ninto the huge, physical form of the Fourth Race Man, -- rather\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 152 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nthan believe him created of the dust of the Earth (*literally*),*\n*or from some unknown anthropoid ancestor.\n\nNor does our esoteric theory clash with scientific data, except\non first appearance, as Dr. A. Wilson, **F.R.S**., says, in\na letter to \"*Knowledge,*\"* *(*Dec.\n*23*, *1881). \"Evolution -- rather Nature, in\nthe light of evolution -- has only been studied for some *twenty-five\nyears or so. *That is, of course, a mere fractional space\nin the history of human thought.\" And just because of that\nwe do not lose all hope that materialistic science will amend\nits ways, and will gradually accept the esoteric teachings --\nif even at first divorced from their (to science) too metaphysical\nelements.\n\nHas the last word on the subject of human evolution yet been said?\n\"Each . . . . answer to the great Question (Man's Real Place\nin Nature), invariably asserted by the followers of its propounder,\nif not by himself, to be *complete and final, *remains\nin high authority and esteem, *it may* *be* *for\none century, *it may be for twenty,\" writes Prof. Huxley;\n\"but, as invariably, time proves each reply to have been\na *mere approximation* *to the truth -- tolerable chiefly\non account of the ignorance of those by* *whom it was accepted,\nand wholly intolerable when tested by the larger knowledge of\ntheir successors*\"! !* *Will this eminent Darwinian\nadmit the possibility of his *pithecoid ancestry *being\nassignable to the list of \"wholly intolerable beliefs,\"\nin the \"larger knowledge\" of Occultists? *But whence\nthe savage? *Mere \"rising to the civilized state\"\ndoes not account for the evolution of form.\n\nIn the same letter, \"The Evolution of Man,\" Dr. Wilson\nmakes other strange confessions. Thus, he observes, in answer\nto the queries put to \"*Knowledge*\"* *by\n\"G. M.\": --\n\n\" 'Has evolution effected any change in man? If so, what\nchange? If not, why not?' . . . If we refuse to admit (as science\ndoes) that man was created a perfect being, and then became degraded,\nthere exists only another supposition -- that of evolution. If\nman has arisen from a savage to a civilized state, that surely\nis evolution. *We do not yet know, because such knowledge is\ndifficult to acquire, if the human frame is subject to the same\ninfluences as those of lower animals. *But there is little\ndoubt that elevation from savagery to civilized life means and\nimplies 'evolution,' and that of considerable extent. Mentally,\nman's evolution cannot be doubted; the ever-widening sphere of\nthought has sprung from small and rude beginnings, like language\nitself. But man's ways of life, his power of adaptation to his\nsurroundings, and countless other circumstances, have made the\nfacts and course of his 'evolution' very difficult to trace.\"\n\nThis very difficulty ought to make the Evolutionists more cautious\nin their affirmations. But why is evolution *impossible, *if\n\"man was created a perfect being, and then became degraded?\"\nAt best it can only apply\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 153 ARISTOTLE DENIED HELIOCENTRICISM.\n\nto the *outward, physical man. *As remarked in \"*Isis\nUnveiled,*\" Darwin's evolution begins at the middle point,\ninstead of commencing for man, as for everything else, from the\nuniversals. The Aristotle-Baconian method may have its advantages,\nbut it has undeniably already demonstrated its defects. Pythagoras\nand Plato, who proceeded from the Universals downwards, are now\nshown more learned, in the light of modern science, than was Aristotle.\nFor he opposed and denounced the idea of the revolution of the\nearth and even of its rotundity. \"Almost all those,\"\nhe wrote, \"who affirm that they have studied heaven in its\nuniformity, claim that the earth is in the centre, but the philosophers\nof the Italian School, otherwise called the Pythagoreans, teach\nentirely the contrary. . . .\" Because (*a*) the Pythagoreans\nwere Initiates, and (*b*) they followed the deductive method.\nWhereas, Aristotle, the father of the inductive system, complained\nof those who taught that \"the centre of our system was occupied\nby the Sun, and the earth was only a star, which by a rotatory\nmotion around the same centre, produces night and day\" (*Vide\nDe Caelo, *Book II., c. 13.) The same with regard to man.\nThe theory taught in the Secret Doctrine, and now expounded, is\nthe only one, which can -- without falling into the absurdity\nof a \"miraculous\" man created out of the dust of the\nEarth, or the still greater fallacy of man evolving from a pinch\nof lime-salt, (the ex-protoplasmic moneron) -- account for his\nappearance on Earth.\n\n*Analogy *is the guiding law in Nature, the only true Ariadne's\nthread that can lead us, through the inextricable paths of her\ndomain, toward her primal and final mysteries. Nature, as a creative\npotency, is infinite, and no generation of physical scientists\ncan ever boast of having exhausted the list of her ways and methods,\nhowever uniform the laws upon which she proceeds. If we can conceive\nof a ball of Fire-mist becoming gradually -- as it rolls through\naeons of time in the interstellar spaces -- a planet, a self-luminous\nglobe, to settle into a *man-bearing *world or Earth, thus\nhaving passed from a soft plastic body into a rock-bound globe;\nand if we see on it everything evolving from the non-nucleated\njelly-speck that becomes the sarcode* of the *moneron, *then\npasses from its *protistic *state** into the form of an\nanimal, to grow into a gigantic reptilian monster of the Mesozoic\ntimes; then dwindles again into the (comparatively) dwarfish crocodile,\nnow confined solely to tropical\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Or what is more generally known as *Protoplasm. *This\nsubstance received its name of \"*Sarcode*\" from\nProf. Dujardin Beaumetz far earlier.\n\n** The Monera are indeed *Protista. *They are neither animals\n\"nor plants,\" writes Haeckel; \" . . . the whole\nbody of the Moneron represents nothing more than a single thoroughly\nhomogeneous particle of albumen in a firmly adhesive condition.\"\n(\"*Journal of Microscopical Science,*\"* Jan.,\n*1869, *p*. 28.)\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 154 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nregions, and the universally common lizard* -- how can man alone\nescape the general law? \"There were giants on earth in those\ndays,\" says *Genesis, *repeating the statement of\nall the other Eastern Scriptures; and the *Titans *are\nfounded on anthropological and physiological fact.\n\nAnd, as the hard-shelled crustacean was once upon a time a jelly-speck,\n\"a thoroughly homogeneous particle of albumen in a firmly\nadhesive condition,\" so was the outward covering of primitive\nman, his early \"coat of skin,\" *plus *an immortal\nspiritual monad, and a psychic temporary form and body within\nthat shell. The modern, hard, muscular man almost impervious to\nany climate, was, perhaps, some 25,000,000 years ago, just what\nthe Haeckelian Moneron is, strictly \"an organism without\norgans,\" an entirely homogeneous substance with a structureless\nalbumen body within, and a human form only outwardly.\n\nNo man of science has the right, in this century, to find the\nfigures of the Brahmins preposterous in the question of Chronology;\nfor their own calculations often exceed by far the claims made\nby esoteric science. This may easily be shown.\n\nHelmholtz calculated that the cooling of our Earth from a temperature\nof 2,000 [[degrees]] to 200' Cent. must have occupied a period\nof no less than 350,000,000 years. Western science (including\ngeology) seems generally to allow our globe an age of about 500,000,000\nyears altogether. Sir W. Thomson, however, limits the appearance\nof the earliest vegetable life to 100,000,000 years ago -- a statement\nrespectfully contradicted by the archaic records. Speculations,\nfurthermore, vary daily in the domains of science. Meanwhile,\nsome geologists are very much opposed to such limitation. \"Volger\n. . . . calculates, that the time requisite for the deposit of\nthe strata known to us must at least have amounted to 648 millions\nof years . . . . \" Both time and space are infinite and eternal.\n\"The Earth, as a material existence, is indeed infinite;\nthe changes only which it has undergone can be determined by finite\nperiods of time\" (*Burmeister*)*. *\"We\nmust therefore assume that the starry heaven is not merely in\nspace, what no astronomer doubts, but also in time, without beginning\nor end; that it never was created, and is imperishable.\"\n(See *Czolbe*)*.***\n\nCzolbe repeats exactly what the Occultists say. But the rising and the setting of the *Sun *being\nperpetually *opposite to each other -- *and* *in\nthe same way, all the cardinal points, and so the cross-points,\nMaitreya; people speak of the rising of the Sun where they see\nit; and where the Sun disappears, there, to them, is his setting.\nOf the Sun, which is always in *one and the same place, *there\nis neither setting nor rising, for what is called rising and *setting\n*are only the seeing and the *not *seeing the Sun.\"\n(*Vishnu Purana, Book IL, ch. viii.*)\n\nTo this Fitzedward Hall remarks, \"The Heliocentricism taught\nin this passage is remarkable. It is contradicted, however, a\nlittle further on.\" Contradicted *purposely, *because\nit was a secret temple-teaching. Martin Haug remarked the same\nteaching in another passage. It is useless to calumniate the Aryans\nany longer.\n\nTo return to the Chronology of the geologists and anthropologists.\nWe are afraid Science has no reasonable grounds on which she could\noppose the views of the Occultists in this direction. Except that\n\"of man, the highest organic being of creation, not a trace\nwas found in the primary strata; only in the uppermost, the so-called\nalluvial layer,\" is all that can be urged, so far. That man\nwas *not the last member in the mammalian family, *but\nthe first in *this Round, *is something that science will\nbe forced to acknowledge one day. A similar view also has already\nbeen mooted in France on very high authority.\n\nThat man can be shown to have lived in the mid-Tertiary period,\nand in a geological age *when there did not yet exist one single\nspecimen of the now known species of mammals, *is a statement\nthat science *cannot *deny and which has now been proven\nby de Quatrefages.* But even supposing his existence in the Eocene\nperiod is not yet demonstrated, what period of time has elapsed\nsince the Cretaceous period? We are aware of the fact that only\nthe boldest geologists dare to place man further back than the\nMiocene age. But how long, we ask, is the duration of those ages\nand periods since the Mesozoic time? On this, after a good deal\nof speculation and wrangling, science is silent, the greatest\nauthorities upon the subject being compelled to answer to the\nquestion: \"We do not know.\" This ought to show that\nthe men of science are no greater authorities in this matter than\nare the profane. Laing, p. 32.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 156 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nthe time from the Jurassic period, or the middle of the so-called\n\"Reptilian\" age (when the Third Race appeared), up to\nthe Miocene, when the bulk of the Fourth Race was submerged?*\n\nThe writer is well aware that those specialists, whose computations\nof the ages of the globe and man are the most liberal, always\nhad the shyer majority against them. But this proves very little,\nsince the majority rarely, if ever, turns out to be right in the\nlong run. Harvey stood alone for many years. The advocates for\ncrossing the Atlantic with steamers were in danger of ending their\ndays in a lunatic asylum. Mesmer is classed to this day (in the\nEncyclopaedias) along with Cagliostro, and St. Germain, as a charlatan\nand impostor. And now that Messrs. Charcot and Richet have vindicated\nMesmer's claims, and that \"Mesmerism\" under its new\nname of Hypnotism -- a false nose on a very old face -- is accepted\nby science, it does not strengthen one's respect for that majority,\nwhen one sees the ease and unconcern with which its members treat\nof \"Hypnotism,\" \"Telepathic Impacts,\" and\nits other phenomena. They speak of it, in short, as if they had\nbelieved in it since the days of Solomon, and had never called\nits votaries, only a few years ago, \"lunatics and impostors!\"**\n\nThe same revulsion of thought is in store for the long period\nof years, claimed by esoteric philosophy as the age of sexual\nand physiological mankind. Therefore even the Stanza which says:\n--\n\n\"The mind-born, the boneless, gave being to the will-born\nwith bones\"; adding that this took place in the middle of\nthe *Third *Race 18,000,000 years ago -- has yet a chance\nof being accepted by future scientists.\n\nAs far as **XIX**th century thought is concerned, we shall\nbe told, even by some personal friends who are imbued with an\nabnormal respect for the shifting conclusions of science, that\nsuch a statement is absurd. How much more improbable will appear\nour further assertion, to the effect that the antiquity of the\n*First *Race dates back millions of years beyond this again.\nFor, although the exact figures are withheld, and it is out of\nthe question to refer the incipient evolution of the primeval\nDivine\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* \"*Esoteric Buddhism,*\" p. 70.\n\n** The same fate is in store for spiritualistic phenomena and\nall the other psychological manifestations of the *inner *Man.\nSince the days of Hume, whose researches culminated in a nihilistic\nidealism, Psychology has gradually shifted its position to one\nof crass *materialism*. Hume is regarded as a psychologist,\nand yet he denied *a priori *the possibility of phenomena\nin which millions now believe, including many men of science.\nThe Hylo-idealists of to-day are rank *Annihilationists. *The\nschools of Spencer and Bain are respectively positivist and materialist,\nand not metaphysical at all. It is *psychism *and not *psychology;\n*it reminds one as little of the Vedantic teaching as the\npessimism of Schopenhauer and von Hartmann recalls the esoteric\nphilosophy, the heart and soul of true Buddhism.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 157 THE SLEIGHT-OF-HAND OF SCIENCE.\n\nRaces with *certainty *to either the early Secondary, or\nthe Primary ages of geology, one thing is clear: that the figures\n18,000,000 of years, which embrace the duration of *sexual,\nphysical, *man, have to be enormously increased if the whole\nprocess of spiritual, astral and physical development is taken\ninto account. Many geologists, indeed, consider that the duration\nof the Quaternary and Tertiary Ages demands the concession of\nsuch an estimate; and it is quite certain that no terrestrial\nconditions whatever negative the hypothesis of an Eocene Man,\nif evidence for his reality is forthcoming. Occultists, who maintain\nthat the above date carries us far back into the secondary or\n\"Reptilian\" age, may refer to M. de Quatrefages in support\nof the possible existence of man in that remote antiquity. But\nwith regard to the earliest Root-Races the case is very different.\nIf the thick agglomeration of vapours, charged with carbonic acid,\nthat escaped from the soil or was held in suspension in the atmosphere\nsince the commencement of sedimentation, offered a fatal obstacle\nto the life of human organisms as now known, how, it will be asked,\ncould the primeval men have existed? This consideration is, in\nreality, out of court. Such terrestrial conditions as were then\noperative had no touch with the plane on which the evolution of\nthe *ethereal astral *races proceeded. Only in relatively\nrecent geological periods, has the spiral course of cyclic law\nswept mankind into the lowest grade of physical evolution -- the\nplane of gross material causation. In those early ages, *astral\n*evolution was alone in progress, and the two planes, the\nastral and the physical,* though developing on parallel lines,\nhad no direct point of contact with one another. It is obvious\nthat a shadow-like *ethereal *man is related by virtue\nof his organization -- if such it can be called -- only to that\nplane from which the substance of his *Upadhi *is derived.\n\nThere are things, perhaps, that may have escaped the *far-seeing\n-- *but not *all-seeing -- *eyes of our modern naturalists;\nyet it is Nature herself who undertakes to furnish the missing\nlinks. Agnostic speculative thinkers have to choose between the\nversion given by the Secret Doctrine of the East, and the hopelessly\nmaterialistic Darwinian and Biblical accounts of the origin of\nman; between no soul and no spiritual evolution, and the Occult\ndoctrine which repudiates \"Special creation\" and the\n\"Evolutionist\" Anthropogenesis equally.\n\nAgain, to take up the question of \"Spontaneous generation\";\nlife -- as science shows -- has not always reigned on this terrestrial\nplane.\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* It must be noted that, though the astral and physical planes\nof matter ran parallel with one another even in the earliest geological\nages, yet they were not in the same phases of manifestation in\nwhich they are *now.* The Earth did not reach its present\n*grade of density *till 18,000,000 years ago. Since then\n*both* the physical and astral planes have become grosser.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 158 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nThere was a time when even the Haeckelian Moneron -- that simple\nglobule of Protoplasm -- had not yet appeared at the bottom of\nthe seas. Whence came the *Impulse *which caused the molecules\nof Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, etc., to group themselves into the\n*Urschleim *of Oken, that organic \"slime,\" now\nchristened protoplasm. What were the prototypes of the Monera?\nThey, at least, could not have fallen in meteorites from other\nglobes already formed, Sir W. Thomson's wild theory to this effect,\nnotwithstanding. And if *they have *so fallen; if our Earth\ngot its supply of life-germs from other planets; who, or *what,\n*had carried them into those planets? Here, again, unless\nthe Occult teaching is accepted, we are compelled once more to\nface a *miracle; *to accept the theory of a *personal,\nanthropomorphic Creator, *the attributes and definitions of\nwhom, as formulated by the Monotheists, clash as much with philosophy\nand logic, as they degrade the ideal of an infinite Universal\ndeity, before whose incomprehensible awful grandeur the highest\nhuman intellect feels dwarfed. Let not the modern philosopher,\nwhile arbitrarily placing himself on the highest pinnacle of human\nintellectuality hitherto evolved, show himself spiritually and\nintuitionally so far below the conceptions of even the ancient\nGreeks, themselves on a far lower level, in these respects, than\nthe philosophers of Eastern Aryan antiquity. Hylozoism, when philosophically\nunderstood, is the highest aspect of Pantheism. It is the only\npossible escape from idiotic atheism based on lethal materiality,\nand the still more idiotic anthropomorphic conceptions of the\nmonotheists; between which two it stands on its own entirely neutral\nground. Hylozoism *demands *absolute Divine Thought, which\nwould *pervade *the numberless active, creating Forces,\nor \"Creators\"; which *entities *are moved by,\nand have their being in, from, and through that Divine Thought;\nthe latter, nevertheless, having no more personal concern in them\nor *their *creations, than the Sun has in the sun-flower\nand its seeds, or in vegetation in general. Such active \"Creators\"\nare known to exist and are believed in, because perceived and\nsensed by the *inner *man in the Occultist. Thus the latter\nsays that an ABSOLUTE Deity, having to be unconditioned and unrelated,\ncannot be thought of at the same time as an active, creating,\none living god, without immediate degradation of the ideal.* A\nDeity that manifests in *Space *and *Time -*- these\ntwo being simply the forms of THAT which is the Absolute ALL --\ncan be but a fractional part of the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The conception and definition of the *Absolute *by Cardinal\nCusa may satisfy only the Western mind, prisoned, so unconsciously\nto itself, and entirely degenerated by long centuries of scholastic\nand theological sophistry. But this \"Recent philosophy of\nthe Absolute,\" traced by Sir W. Hamilton to Cusa, would never\nsatisfy the more acutely metaphysical mind of the Hindu Vedantin.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 159 OCEANS OF CARBONIC ACID?\n\nwhole. And since that \"all\" cannot be divided in its\nabsoluteness, therefore that *sensed *creator (we say *Creators*)*\n*can be at best but the mere *aspect *thereof. To use\nthe same metaphor -- inadequate to express the full idea, yet\nwell adapted to the case in hand -- these creators are like the\nnumerous rays of the solar orb, which remains unconscious of,\nand unconcerned in, the work; while its mediating agents, the\nrays, become the instrumental media every spring -- the Manvantaric\ndawn of the Earth -- in fructifying and awakening the dormant\nvitality inherent in Nature and its differentiated matter. This\nwas so well understood in antiquity, that even the moderately\nreligious Aristotle remarked that such work of direct creation\nwould be quite *unbecoming *to God -- [[*aprepes toi\ntheo*]]. Plato and other philosophers taught the same: deity\ncannot set its own hand to creation, -- [[*autournein hapanta*]].\nThis Cudworth calls \"Hylozoism.\" As old Zeno is credited\nby Laertius with having said, \"Nature is a habit moved from\nitself, according to seminal principles; perfecting and containing\nthose several things which in determinate times are produced from\nit, and acting agreeably to that from which it was secreted.\"*\n\nLet us return to our subject, pausing to think over it. Indeed,\nif there was vegetable life during those periods that could feed\non the then deleterious elements; and if there was even animal\nlife whose aquatic organization could be developed, notwithstanding\nthe supposed scarcity of Oxygen, why could there not be human\nlife also, in its incipient physical form,* i.e*., in a\nrace of beings adapted for that geological period and its surroundings?\nBesides, science confesses that it knows nothing of the real length\nof \"geological periods.\"\n\nBut the chief question before us is, whether it is quite certain\nthat, from the time of that which is called the \"Azoic\"\nage, there ever was such an atmosphere as that hypothesised by\nthe Naturalists. Not all the physicists agree with this idea.\nWere the writer anxious to corroborate the teachings of the Secret\nDoctrine by exact science, it would be easy to show, on the admission\nof more than one physicist, that the atmosphere has changed little,\nif at all, since the first condensation of the oceans -- *i.e.,\n*since the Laurentian period, the *Pyrolithic *age.\nSuch, at any rate, is the opinion of Blanchard, S. Meunier, and\neven of Bischof -- as the experiments of the latter scientist\nwith basalts have shown. For were we to take the word of the majority\nof scientists as to the quantity of deadly gases, and of elements\nentirely saturated with carbon and nitrogen, in which the vegetable\nand animal kingdoms are shown to have lived, thriven, and developed,\nthen one would have to come to the curious conclusion that there\nwere, in those days, oceans\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n*Cudworth's \"*Intellectual System,*\"* *I.\np. 328.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 160 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nof* liquid carbonic acid, *instead of water. With such\nan element, it becomes doubtful whether the Ganoids, or even the\nPrimitive Trilobites themselves could live in the oceans of the\nprimary age -- let alone in those of the Silurian, as shown by\nBlanchard.\n\nThe conditions that were necessary for the earliest race of mankind,\nhowever, require no elements, whether simple or compound. That\nwhich was stated at the beginning is maintained. The spiritual\nethereal Entity which lived in Spaces unknown to Earth, before\nthe first sidereal \"jelly-speck\" evolved in the ocean\nof crude Cosmic Matter, -- billions and trillions of years before\nour globular speck in infinity, called Earth, came into being\nand generated the *Moneron *in its drops, called Oceans\n-- needed no \"elements.\" The \"Manu with soft bones\"\ncould well dispense with calcic phosphate, as he had no bones,\nsave in a figurative sense. And while even the Monera, however\nhomogeneous their organism, still required physical conditions\nof life that would help them toward further evolution, the being\nwhich became primitive Man and the \"Father of man,\"\nafter evolving on planes of existence undreamt of by science,\ncould well remain impervious to any state of atmospheric conditions\naround him. The primitive ancestor, in Brasseur de Bourbourg's\n\"*Popul-Vuh,*\"* *who -- in the Mexican\nlegends -- could act and live with equal ease under ground and\nwater as upon the Earth, answers only to the Second and early\nThird Races in our texts. And if the three kingdoms of Nature\nwere so different in *pre*-diluvian ages, why should not\nman have been composed of materials and combinations of atoms\nnow entirely unknown to physical science? The plants and animals\nnow known, in almost numberless varieties and species, have all\ndeveloped, according to scientific hypotheses, from primitive\nand far fewer organic forms.
