They lose their \"third Eye.\"\n\n---------------------\n\n38. **T**HUS TWO BY TWO, ON THE SEVEN ZONES, THE\n**T**HIRD (*Race*)* *GAVE BIRTH TO\nTHE **F**OURTH (*Race men*). **T**HE\nGODS BECAME NO-GODS (*Sura became a-Sura*) (*a*).\n\n-------\n\n39. **T**HE **F**IRST (*Race*)*\n***O***N *EVERY ZONE WAS MOON-COLOURED\n(*yellow-white*); THE **S**ECOND, YELLOW,\nLIKE GOLD; THE **T**HIRD, RED; THE **F**OURTH,\nBROWN, WHICH BECAME BLACK WITH SIN.* **T**HE FIRST\nSEVEN (*human*)* *SHOOTS WERE ALL OF ONE COMPLEXION\nIN THE BEGINNING. **T**HE NEXT (*seven, the sub-races*)\nBEGAN MIXING THEIR COLOURS (*b*).\n\n(*a*) To understand this verse 38, it must be read together\nwith the three verses of Stanza **IX**. Up to this point of\nevolution man belongs more to metaphysical than physical nature.\nIt is only after the so-called **F**ALL*,*\nthat the races began to develop rapidly into a purely human shape.\nAnd, in order that he may correctly comprehend the full meaning\nof the Fall, so mystic and transcendental is it in its real significance,\nthe student must be told at once the details which preceded\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Strictly speaking, it is only from the time of the Atlantean,\nbrown and yellow giant Races, that one ought to speak of MAN,\nsince it was the Fourth race only which was the first *completely\nhuman species, *however much larger in size than we are now.\nIn \"Man\" (by two chelas), all that is said of the Atlanteans\nis quite correct. It is chiefly that race which became \"black\nwith sin\" that brought the divine names of the Asuras, the\nRakshasas and the Daityas into disrepute, and passed them on to\nposterity as the names of fiends. For, as said, the Suras (gods)\nor Devas having incarnated in the wise men of Atlantis, the names\nof *Asuras and Rakshasas *were given to the Atlanteans;\nwhich names, owing to their incessant conflicts with the last\nremnants of the Third Race and the \"Sons of Will and Yoga,\"\nhave led to the later allegories about them in the Puranas. \"Asura\nwas the generic appellation of all the Atlanteans who were the\nenemies of the spiritual heroes of the Aryans (gods).\" (\"Man,\"\np. 97.)\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 228 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nthis event; of which event modern theology has formed a pivot\non which its most pernicious and absurd dogmas and beliefs are\nmade to turn.\n\nThe archaic commentaries explain, as the reader must remember,\nthat, of the Host of Dhyanis, whose turn it was to incarnate as\nthe *Egos* of the immortal, but, *on this plane,*\n*senseless *monads -- that some \"obeyed\" (the\nlaw of evolution) immediately when the men of the Third Race became\nphysiologically and physically ready, *i.e*., when they\nhad separated into sexes. These were those early conscious Beings\nwho, now adding conscious knowledge and will to their inherent\nDivine purity, *created *by* Kriyasakti *the semi-Divine\nman, who became the seed on earth for future adepts. Those, on\nthe other hand, who, jealous of their intellectual freedom (unfettered\nas it then was by the bonds of matter), said: -- \"We can\nchoose . . . we have wisdom\" (See verse 24), and incarnated\nfar later -- these had their first Karmic punishment prepared\nfor them. They got bodies (physiologically) inferior to their\nastral models, because their *chhayas *had belonged to\nprogenitors of an inferior degree in the seven classes. As to\nthose \"Sons of Wisdom\" who had \"deferred\"\ntheir incarnation till the Fourth Race, which was already tainted\n(physiologically) with sin and impurity, they produced a terrible\ncause, the Karmic result of which weighs on them to this day.\nIt was produced in themselves, and they became the carriers of\nthat seed of iniquity for aeons to come, because the bodies they\nhad to inform had become defiled through their own procrastination.\n(*See verses 32, *36.)\n\nThis was the \"Fall of the angels,\" because of their\nrebellion against Karmic Law. The \"fall of *man*\"*\n*was no fall, *for he was irresponsible. *But \"Creation\"\nhaving been invented on the dualistic system as the \"prerogative\nof God alone,\" the legitimate *attribute *patented\nby theology in the name of an *infinite *deity of their\nown making, this power had to be regarded as \"Satanic,\"\nand as an usurpation of divine rights. Thus, the foregoing, in\nthe light of such narrow views, must naturally be considered as\na terrible slander on man, \"created in the image of God,\"\na still more dreadful blasphemy in the face of the dead-letter\ndogma. \"Your doctrine,\" the Occultists were already\ntold, \"makes of man, created out of dust in the likeness\nof his God, a vehicle of the Devil, from the first.\" \"Why\ndid you make of your god a devil -- both, moreover, created *in\nyour own image?*\"* *is our reply. The *esoteric\n*interpretation of the Bible, however, sufficiently refutes\nthis slanderous invention of theology; the Secret Doctrine must\nsome day become the just Karma of the Churches -- more anti-Christian\nthan the representative assemblies of the most confirmed Materialists\nand Atheists.\n\nThe old doctrine about the true meaning of the \"Fallen Angels,\"\nin its anthropological and evolutionary sense, is contained in\nthe Kabala,\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 229 THE MYSTERIES AMONG THE MAYAS.\n\nand explains the Bible. It is found pre-eminent in *Genesis\n*when the latter is read in a spirit of research for truth,\nwith no eye to dogma, and in no mood of preconception. This is\neasily proven. In *Genesis *(vi.) the \"Sons of God\"\n--* B*'*ne Aleim* -- become enamoured of the daughters\nof men, marry, and reveal to their wives the mysteries unlawfully\nlearnt by them in heaven, according to Enoch; and this is the\n\"Fall of Angels.\"* But what is, in reality, the \"Book\nof Enoch\" itself, from which the author of *Revelation\n*and even the St. John of the Fourth Gospel have so profusely\nquoted? (*e.g.*, verse 8, in chapter 10, about all who\nhave come before Jesus, being \"thieves and robbers.\")\nSimply a *Book of Initiation, *giving out in allegory and\ncautious phraseology the programme of certain archaic mysteries\nperformed in the *inner *temples. The author of the \"Sacred\nMysteries among the Mayas and Quiches\" very justly suggests\nthat the so-called \"Visions\" of Enoch relate to his\n(Enoch's) experience at initiation, and what he learned in the\nmysteries; while he very erroneously states his opinion that Enoch\nhad learned them before being converted\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* In general, the so-called *orthodox *Christian conceptions\nabout the \"fallen\" angels or Satan, are as remarkable\nas they are absurd. About a dozen could be cited, of the most\nvarious character as to details, and all from the pen of educated\nlay authors, \"University graduates\" of the present quarter\nof our century. Thus, the author of \"Earth's Earliest Ages,\"\nJ. H. Pember, **M.A**., devotes a thick volume to proving Theosophists,\nSpiritualists, Metaphysicians, Agnostics, Mystics, poets, and\nevery contemporary author on oriental speculations, to be the\ndevoted servants of the \"Prince of the Air,\" and irretrievably\ndamned. He describes Satan and his Antichrist in this wise: --\n\n\"Satan is the 'Anointed Cherub' of old. . . . God created\nSatan, the fairest and wisest of all his creatures in this part\nof His Universe, and made him Prince of the World, and of the\nPower of the Air. . . . He was placed in an Eden, which was both\nfar anterior to the Eden of Genesis. . . . and of an altogether\ndifferent and more substantial character, resembling the New Jerusalem.\nThus, Satan being perfect in wisdom, and beauty, His vast empire\nis our earth, if not the whole solar system. . . . Certainly no\nother angelic power of greater or even equal dignity has been\nrevealed to us. The *Archangel Michael himself is quoted by\nJude as preserving towards the Prince of Darkness the respect\ndue to a superior, however wicked he may be, until God has formally\ncommanded *his deposition.\" Then we are informed that\n\"Satan was from the moment of his creation *surrounded\nby the insignia of royalty*\" (!* *!): that he\n\"awoke to consciousness to find the air filled with the rejoicing\nmusic of those whom God had appointed . . . .\" Then the Devil\n\"*passes from the royalty to his priestly dignity*\"\n(! ! !) \"Satan *was also a priest of the Most High,*\"*\n*etc., etc. And now -- \"Antichrist will be Satan incarnate\"\n(pp. 56-59). The Pioneers of the coming Apollyon have already\nappeared -- they are the Theosophists, the Occultists, the authors\nof the \"Perfect Way,\" of \"Isis Unveiled,\"\nof the \"Mystery of the Ages,\" and even of the \"**L**ight\nof **A**sia\"! ! The author notes the \"*avowed\norigin*\"* *(of Theosophy) *from the *\"*descending\nangels,*\"* *from the \"Nephilim,\" or\nthe angels of the **VI**th ch. of *Genesis, *and the\nGiants. He ought to note his own descent from them also, as the\npresent Secret Doctrine endeavours to show -- unless he refuses\nto belong to the present humanity.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 230 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nto Christianity (!!); furthermore, he believes that this book\nwas written \"at the beginning of the Christian era, when\n. . . the customs and religion of the Egyptians fell into decadency\"!\nThis is hardly possible, since Jude quotes in his epistle from\nthe \"Book of Enoch\" (verse 14); and, therefore, as Archbishop\nLaurence, the translator of the Book of Enoch from the Ethiopic\nversion, remarks, it \"could not have been the production\nof a writer who lived after . . . or was even coeval with\"\nthe writers of the New Testament: unless, indeed, Jude and the\nGospels, and all that follows, was also a production of the already\nestablished Church -- which, some critics say, is not impossible.\nBut we are now concerned with the \"fallen Angels\" of\nEnoch, rather than with Enoch himself.\n\nIn Indian exotericism, these angels (*Asuras*)* *are\nalso denounced as \"the enemies of the gods;\" those who\noppose sacrificial worship offered to the latter. In Christian\ntheology they are broadly referred to as the \"Fallen Spirits,\"\nthe heroes of various conflicting and contradictory legends about\nthem, gathered from Pagan sources. The *coluber tortuosus *\"the\ntortuous snake,\" a qualification said to have originated\nwith the Jews, had quite another meaning before the Roman Church\ndistorted it: -- among others, *a purely astronomical meaning.*\n\nThe \"Serpent\" fallen from on high, \"*deorsum\nfluens,*\"* *was credited with the possession of\nthe Keys of the Empire of the Dead, [[*tou thanatus arche*]]\nto that day, when Jesus saw it \"falling like lightning from\nheaven\" (*Luke *x. 17, 18), the Roman Catholic interpretation\nof *cadebat ut fulgur *to the contrary, notwithstanding;\nand it means indeed that even \"the devils are subject\"\nto the *Logos -- who *is **W**ISDOM, but who,\nas the opponent of ignorance, is Satan or Lucifer at the same\ntime. This remark refers to divine Wisdom falling like lightning\non, and quickening the intellects of those who fight the devils\nof ignorance and superstition. Up to the time when Wisdom, in\nthe shape of the incarnating Spirits of **M**AHAT,\ndescended from on high to animate and call the Third Race to real\nconscious life, humanity -- if it can be so called in its animal,\nsenseless state --was of course doomed to -*- moral *as\nwell as to physical death. The Angels *fallen into generation\n*are referred to metaphorically *as Serpents and Dragons\nof Wisdom. *On the other hand, regarded in the light of the\n**L**OGOS, the Christian Saviour, like Krishna, whether as\nman or logos, may be said to have saved those who believed in\nthe secret teachings from \"eternal death,\" to have conquered\nthe Kingdom of Darkness, or Hell, as every Initiate does. This\nin the human, terrestrial form of the Initiates, and also because\nthe *logos *is Christos, that principle of our inner nature\nwhich develops in us into the Spiritual Ego -- the Higher-Self\n-- being formed of the indissoluble union *of Buddhi *(the\nsixth) and the spiritual efflorescence of *Manas, the *\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 231 SATANIC MYTHS.\n\nfifth principle.* \"The Logos is passive Wisdom in Heaven\nand Conscious, Self-Active Wisdom on Earth,\" we are taught.\nIt is the Marriage of \"Heavenly man\" with the \"Virgin\nof the World\" --Nature, as described in *Pymander*;*\n*the result of which is their progeny -- immortal man. It\nis this which is called in St. John's Revelation the marriage\nof the lamb with his bride. (xix. 7.) That \"wife\" is\nnow identified with the Church of Rome owing to the arbitrary\ninterpretations of her votaries. But they seem to forget that\nher *linen *may be fine and white *outwardly *(like\nthe \"whitened sepulchre\"), but that the rottenness she\nis inwardly filled with, is not \"the righteousness of Saints\"\n(*v*. 8. *ibid*)*, *but rather the blood\nof the Saints she has \"slain upon the earth\" (*chap*.\nxviii. 24.) Thus the remark made by the great Initiate (*in\nLuke *x. 18) -- one that referred allegorically to the ray\nof Enlightenment and reason, *falling like lightning *from\non high into the hearts and *minds *of the converts to\nthat old wisdom-religion then presented in a new form by the wise\nGalilean Adeptt** -- was distorted out of recognition (as was\nhis own personality), and made to fit in with one of the most\ncruel as the most pernicious of all theological dogmas. (*Vide\nat the end of Stanza XI. *\"**S**ATANIC **M**YTHS.\")\n\nBut if Western theology alone holds the patent for, and copyright\nof** S**ATAN -- in all the dogmatic horror of that\nfiction -- other nationalities\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* It is not correct to refer to Christ -- as some theosophists\ndo -- as the sixth principle in man -- *Buddhi. *The latter\n*per se *is a passive and latent principle, the spiritual\nvehicle of Atman, inseparable from the manifested Universal Soul.\nIt is only in union and in conjunction with *Self-consciousness\n*that* Buddhi* becomes the Higher Self and the divine,\ndiscriminating Soul. *Christos *is the seventh principle,\nif anything.\n\n** To make it plainer, any one who reads that passage in *Luke,\n*will see that the remark follows the report of the *seventy,\n*who rejoice that \"even the devils (the spirit of controversy\nand reasoning, or the opposing power, since Satan means simply\n\"*adversary*\"* *or *opponent*)*\n*are subject unto us through thy name.\" (*Luke*\nx. 17.) Now, \"thy name\" means the name of Christos,\nor Logos, or the spirit of true divine wisdom, as distinct from\nthe spirit of intellectual or mere materialistic reasoning --\nthe HIGHER SELF in short. And when Jesus remarks to this that\nhe has \"beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven,\"\nit is a mere statement of his clairvoyant powers, notifying them\nthat he already knew it, and a reference to the incarnation of\nthe divine ray (the gods or angels) which *falls into generation.\n*For not all men, by any means, benefit by that incarnation,\nand with some the power remains latent and dead during the whole\nlife. Truly \"No man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father;\nand who the Father is, but the Son\" as added by Jesus then\nand there (*Ibid* v. 22)* *-- the Church \"of\nChrist\" less than any one else. The Initiates alone understood\nthe secret meaning of the term \"Father and the Son,\"\nand knew that it referred to Spirit and Soul on the Earth. For\nthe teachings of Christ were *occult *teachings, which\ncould only be explained *at the initiation. *They were\nnever intended for the masses, for Jesus forbade the twelve to\ngo to the Gentiles and the Samaritans (*Matt*. x. 8), and\nrepeated to his disciples that the \"mysteries of Heaven\"\nwere for them alone, not for the multitudes (*Mark *iv.\n11).\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 232 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nand religions have committed equal errors in their misinterpretation\nof this tenet, which is one of the most profoundly philosophical\nand ideal conceptions of ancient thought. For they have both disfigured\nand hinted at the correct meaning of it in their numerous allegories\ntouching the subject. Nor have the\n\nsemi-esoteric dogmas of Puranic Hinduism failed to evolve very\nsuggestive symbols and allegories concerning the rebellious and\nfallen gods. The Puranas teem with them; and we find a direct\nhint at the truth in the frequent allusions of Parasara (*Vishnu\nPurana*),* *to all those Rudras, Rishis, Asuras, Kumaras\nand Munis, having *to be born in every age, *to re-incarnate\nin every Manvantara. This (esoterically) is equivalent to saying\nthat the FLAMES born of the Universal Mind (Mahat), owing to the\nmysterious workings of Karmic Will and an impulse of Evolutionary\nLaw, had, as in Pymander -- without any gradual transition --\nlanded on this Earth, having *broken through the seven Circles\nof fire, *or the seven intermediate Worlds, in short.\n\nThere is an eternal cyclic law of re-births, and the series is\nheaded at every new Manvantaric dawn by those who had enjoyed\ntheir rest from re-incarnations in previous Kalpas for incalculable\n*AEons *-- by the highest and the earliest *Nirvanees.\n*It was the turn of those \"Gods\" to incarnate in\nthe present Manvantara; hence their presence on Earth, and the\nensuing allegories; hence, also, the perversion of the original\nmeaning.* The Gods who had *fallen *into generation, whose\nmission it was to complete *divine* man, are found represented\nlater on as Demons, evil Spirits, and fiends, at feud and war\nwith Gods, or the irresponsible agents of the one Eternal law.\nBut no conception of such creatures as the devils and Satan of\nthe Christian, Jewish, and Mahomedan religions was ever intended\nunder those thousand and one Aryan allegories.** (*See *\"*The\nFallen Angels*\"* and *\"*The Mystic Dragons*\"*\nin Part II.*)\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* So, for instance, in the Puranas, \"Pulastya,\" a Prajapati,\nor son of Brahma -- the progenitor of the Rakshasas, and the grandfather\nof Ravana, the Great King of Lanka (*see Ramayana*)*\n*-- had, *in* *a former birth, *a son named\nDattoli, \"who is now known as the sage Agastya\" -- says\nVishnu Purana. This name of Dattoli alone, has six more variants\nto it, or seven meanings. He is called respectively, Dattoi, Dattali,\nDattotti, Dattotri, Dattobhri, Dambhobhi and Dambholi -- which\nseven variants have each a secret sense, and refer in the esoteric\ncomments to various ethnological classifications, and also to\nphysiological and anthropological mysteries of the primitive races.\nFor, surely, the Rakshasas are not *demons, *but simply\nthe primitive and ferocious giants, the Atlanteans, who were scattered\non the face of the globe as the Fifth Race is now. Vasishta is\na warrant to this, if his words addressed to Parasara, who attempted\na bit of JADOO (sorcery), which he calls \"sacrifice,\"\nfor the destruction of the Rakshasas, mean anything. For he says,\n\"Let no more of *these unoffending *'*Spirits Darkness*'*\n*be destroyed.\" (*see for details Adiparvan, s. *176*,\nMahabharata*;* also the Linga Purana *\"*Purvardha,*\"*\ns. *64.)\n\n** We have a passage from a Master's letter which has a direct\nbearing upon these [[Footnote continued on next page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 233 HOLY SATAN.\n\nThe true esoteric view about \"Satan,\" the opinion held\non this subject by the whole philosophic antiquity, is admirably\nbrought out in an appendix, entitled \"The Secret of Satan,\"\nto the second edition of Dr. A. Kingsford's \"Perfect Way.\"\nNo better and clearer indication of the truth could be offered\nto the intelligent reader, and it is therefore quoted here at\nsome length: --\n\n\"1. And on the seventh day (seventh creation of the Hindus),*\nthere went forth from the presence of God a *mighty Angel,\n*full of wrath and consuming, and God gave him the dominion\nof the outermost sphere.**\n\n2. \"Eternity brought forth Time; the Boundless gave birth\nto Limit; Being descended into generation.\"***\n\n4*. *\"*Among the Gods is none like unto him, *into\nwhose hands are committed the kingdoms, the power and the glory\nof the worlds:\"\n\n5. \"Thrones and empires, the dynasties of kings,**** the\nfall of nations, the birth of churches, the triumph of Time.\"\n\nFor, as is said in Hermes, \"Satan is the door-keeper of the\n*Temple of the King*;* *he standeth in Solomon's\nporch; he holdeth *the key of the Sanctuary, *that no man\nenter therein, save the Anointed having the arcanum of Hermes\"\n(v. 20 and 21).\n\nThese suggestive and majestic verses had reference with the ancient\nEgyptians and other civilized peoples of antiquity to the *creative\nand generative light of the Logos *(Horus, Brahma, Ahura-Mazda,\netc., etc., as primeval manifestations of the ever-unmanifested\nPrinciple, *e.g.*, Ain-Soph, Parabrahm, or *Zeruana\n*Akerne-- Boundless Time -- *Kala*), but the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] incarnating angels.\nSays the letter: \"Now there are, and there must be, failures\nin the ethereal races of the many classes of Dhyan-Chohans, or\nDevas (*progressed entities of a previous *planetary period),\nas well as among men. But still, as the *failures *are\ntoo far progressed and spiritualized to be thrown back forcibly\nfrom Dhyan-Chohanship into the vortex of a new primordial evolution\nthrough the lower Kingdoms, this then happens. Where a new solar\nsystem has to be evolved these Dhyan-Chohans are borne in by influx\n'ahead' of the Elementals (Entities . . . to be developed into\nhumanity at a *future *time) and remain as a latent or\ninactive spiritual force, in the aura of a nascent world . . .\nuntil the stage of human evolution is reached. . . . Then they\n*become an active force *and commingle with the Elementals,\nto *develop little by little the full type of humanity.*\"*\n*That is to say, to develop in, and endow man with his Self-conscious\nmind, or *Manas.*\n\n* When the earth with its planetary chain and man were to appear.\n\n** Our earth and the physical plane of consciousness.\n\n*** When the pure, celestial Being (Dhyan Chohan) and the great\nPitris of various classes were commissioned -- the one to evolve\ntheir images* *(*Chhaya*),* *and make of\nthem physical man, the others to inform and thus endow him with\ndivine intelligence and the comprehension of the *Mysteries\nof Creation.*\n\n**** The \"dynasties of the kings\" who all regard themselves\nas the \"anointed,\" reigning \"by the Grace of God,\"\nwhereas in truth, they reign by the grace of *matter, *the\ngreat *Illusion, *the Deceiver.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 234 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nmeaning is now degraded in the Kabala. The \"Anointed,\"\nwho has the secrets and mysteries of Hermes (*Buddha, *Wisdom),\nand who alone is entrusted with the key to the \"Sanctuary,\"\nthe Womb of nature, in order to fructify it and call to active\nlife and being the whole Kosmos, has become, with the Jews, Jehovah,\nthe \"God of generation\" on the lunar mountain (Sinai,\nthe mountain of the moon, \"*Sin*\")*. *The\n\"Sanctuary\" has become the \"Holy of Holies,\"\nand the arcanum has been anthropomorphised and *phallicised\n*and dragged down into matter, indeed. Hence arose the necessity\nof making of the \"Dragon of Wisdom,\" the *Serpent\nof Genesis: *of the conscious god who needed a body to clothe\nhis too subjective divinity, Satan. But the \"innumerable\nincarnations of Spirit,\" and \"the ceaseless pulse and\ncurrent of desire\" refer, the first one, to our doctrine\nof Karmic and cyclic rebirths, the second -- to **E**ROS,\nnot the later god of material, physiological love, but to the\ndivine desire in the gods, as well as in all nature, to create\nand give life to Beings. This, the Rays of the one \"dark,\"\nbecause invisible and incomprehensible, **F**LAME\ncould achieve only by themselves descending into matter. Therefore,\nas continued in the **A**PPENDIX:\n\n12. \"Many names hath God given him (Satan), names of mystery,\nsecret and terrible.\"\n\n13. \"The Adversary, because matter opposeth Spirit. Time\naccuseth even the Saints of the Lord.\"\n\n28, 29, 31. \"Stand in awe of him, and sin not; speak his\nname with trembling . . . . For Satan is the magistrate of the\njustice of God (Karma); he beareth the balance and the sword .\n. . . For to him *are committed Weight and Measure and Number.*\"\n\nCompare the last sentence with what the Rabbi, who explains the\nKabala to Prince *Al-Chazari *in the Book of that name,\nsays; and it will be found that the *Weight and Measure and\nNumber *are, in *Sepher Jezirah,* the attributes of\nthe Sephiroth (the three *Sephrim, *or figures, ciphers)\ncovering the whole collective number of 10; and that the Sephiroth\nare the collective Adam Kadmon, the \"Heavenly Man\" or\nthe *Logos. *Thus Satan and the anointed were identified\nin ancient thought. Therefore,\n\n33. \"Satan is the minister of God, Lord of the seven mansions\nof Hades\" . . . .\n\nThe seven or *Saptaloka *of the Earth with the Hindus;\nfor Hades, or the Limbo of Illusion, of which theology makes a\nregion bordering on Hell,* is simply our globe, the Earth,\n*and thus Satan is called --\n\n33 \". . . . the angel of the *manifest Worlds.*\"\n\nIt is \"Satan who is the god of our planet and *the only\n*god,\" and this without any allusive metaphor to its\nwickedness and depravity. For he is one with the Logos, \"the\nfirst son, *eldest of the gods,*\"* *in the\norder\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 235 THE SHADOW OF GOD.\n\nof microcosmic (divine) evolution; Saturn (Satan), astronomically,\n\"is *the seventh and last *in the order of macrocosmic\nemanation, being the circumference of the kingdom of which Phoebus\n(the light of wisdom, also the Sun) is the centre.\" The Gnostics\nwere right, then, in calling the Jewish god \"an angel of\nmatter,\" or he who breathed (conscious) life into Adam, and\nhe whose planet was Saturn.\n\n34. \"And God hath put a girdle about his loins (the rings\nof Saturn), and the name of the girdle is Death.\"\n\nIn anthropogony this \"girdle\" is the human body with\nits two lower principles, which three die, while the innermost\nman is immortal. And now we approach the \"*Secret *of\nSatan.\"\n\n37, 38, 39. \" . . . Upon Satan only *is the shame of generation.\nHe *hath lost his virginal estate (so hath the *Kumara\n*by incarnating): *uncovering heavenly secrets, *he\nhath entered into bondage. . . . These are the unmanifest and the manifest; the free and\nthe bound (in matter): the virginal and the fallen. And both are\nthe Ministers of the Father, fulfilling the word Divine. . . .\"\nTherefore --\n\n55. \"Holy is the Sabbath of god: *blessed and sanctified\nis the name of the Angel of Havas*\"* -- ***S**ATAN.\n\nFor, \"The glory of Satan is the shadow of the Lord\":\nGod in the manifested world; \"the throne of Satan is the\nfootstool of Adonai\" -- that footstool being the whole **K**osmos.\n(*Vide *Part **II**., \"*Is Pleroma Satan*'*s\nLair?*\")\n\nWhen the Church, therefore, curses Satan, it curses the cosmic\nreflection of God; it anathematizes God made manifest in matter\nor in the objective; it maledicts God, or the ever-incomprehensible\n**W**ISDOM, revealing itself as Light and Shadow,\ngood and evil in nature, in the only manner comprehensible to\nthe limited intellect of **M**AN.\n\nThis is the true philosophical and metaphysical interpretation\nof Samael, or Satan, the adversary in the Kabala; the same tenets\nand spirit being found in the allegorical interpretations of every\nother ancient religion. This philosophical view does not interfere,\nhowever, with the* historical *records connected with it.\nWe say \"historical,\" because allegory and a mythical\nornamentation around the kernel of tradition, in no wise prevent\nthat kernel being a record of real events. Thus, the Kabala, repeating\nthe time-honoured revelations of the once universal history of\nour globe and the evolution of its races, has presented it under\nthe legendary form of the various records which have formed the\nBible. Its historical foundation is now offered, in however imperfect\na form, on these pages from the Secret Doctrine of the East; and\nthus\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 236 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nthe allegorical and symbolical meaning of the Serpent of Genesis\nis found explained by the \"Sons of Wisdom\" (or angels\nfrom higher spheres, though all and each pertain to the kingdom\nof Satan, or Matter) revealing to men the mysteries of Heaven.\nHence, also, all the so-called myths of the Hindu, Grecian, Chaldean,\nand Jewish Pantheons are found to be built on fact and truth.\nThe giants of Genesis are the historical Atlanteans of Lanka,\nand the Greek Titans.\n\nWho can forget that Troy was once upon a time proclaimed a myth,\nand Homer a non-existing personage, while the existence of such\ncities as Herculaneum and Pompeii was denied, and attributed to\nmere fairy legends? Yet Schliemann proved that Troy had really\nexisted, and the two cities, though buried for long ages under\nthe Vesuvian lava, have had their resurrection day, and live again\non the surface of the earth. How many more cities and localities\ncalled \"fabulous\" are on the list of future discoveries,\nhow many more personages regarded as mythical* will one day become\nhistorical, those alone can tell who read the decrees of Fate\nin the astral light.\n\nAs the tenets of the Eastern doctrine, however, have always been\nkept secret, and as the reader can hardly hope to be shown the\noriginal texts unless he becomes an accepted disciple, let the\nGreek and Latin scholar turn to the original texts of Hermetic\nliterature. Let him, for one thing, read carefully the opening\npages of the *Pymander *of Hermes Trismegistus; and then\nhe will see our doctrines corroborated in it, however veiled its\ntext. There also he will find the evolution of the Universe, of\nour Earth (called \"Nature\" in Pymander) as of everything\nelse, from the \"Moyst Principle\" -- or the great Deep,\n**F**ATHER-**M**OTHER -- the first differentiation\nin the manifested Kosmos. First the \"Universal Mind,\"\nwhich the hand of the Christian translator has metamorphosed in\nthe earliest renderings into God, the Father: then the \"Heavenly\nMan,\"** which is the great Total of that Host of Angels,\nwhich was too pure for the creation of the inferior worlds or\nof the men of our globe, but which *fell* nevertheless\n*into matter *by virtue of that same evolution, as the\nsecond *logos *of the \"Father.\"***\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* See the \"Primeval Manus of Humanity.\"\n\n** The \"Heavenly Man\" -- please mark again the word\n-- is \"the **L**OGOS\" or the \"Son\"\nesoterically. Therefore, once that the title was applied to Christ\n(declared God and the very God himself) Christian theology had\nno choice. In order to support its dogma of the personal Trinity\nit had to proclaim, as it does, that the Christian *Logos *is\nthe only true one, and that all the *Logoi *of other religions\nwere false, and only the masquerading Evil Principles, **S**ATAN.\nNow see where this led Western theology to.\n\n*** \"For the *Mind, *a deity abounding in both sexes,\nbeing Life and Life, brought forth by its *Word *another\n*Mind *or Workman; which, being God of the *Fire *and\nthe Spirit, fashioned and formed seven other Governors, which\nin their circles contain the [[Footnote continued on next page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 237 MAHASURA AND SATAN.\n\nSynthetically every Creative Logos, or \"the Son who is one\nwith the Father,\" is the Host of the Rectores Mundi in itself.\nEven Christian theology makes of the seven \"Angels of the\nPresence\" the Virtues, or the personified attributes of God,\nwhich, being created by him, as the Manus were by Brahma, became\nArchangels. The Roman Catholic *theodice *itself recognising,\nin its creative *Verbum Princeps, *the head of those angels\n*-- caput angelorum -- *and the *magni consilii Angelus\n*(the Angel of the great Counsel), thus recognizes the identity\nof Christ and those Angels.\n\n\"*The Gods became no-Gods, the Sura -- A*-sura,\"\nsays the text; *i.e*., gods became fiends -- **S**ATAN,\nwhen read literally. But Satan will now be shown, in the teaching\nof the Secret Doctrine, allegorized as Good, and Sacrifice, a\nGod of Wisdom, under different names.\n\nThe Kabala teaches that Pride and Presumption -- the two chief\nprompters of Selfishness and Egotism -- are the causes that emptied\nheaven of *one third *of its divine denizens -- mystically,\nand of *one third *of the stars -- astronomically; in other\nwords, the two statements are -- the first an allegory, and the\nsecond a fact. The former, nevertheless, as shown, is intimately\nconnected with humanity.\n\nIn their turn the Rosicrucians, who were well acquainted with\nthe secret meaning of the tradition, kept it to themselves, teaching\nmerely that the whole of *creation *was due to, and the\nresult of, that legendary \"War in Heaven\" *brought\non by the rebellion of the angels*** against creative law,\n*or the Demiurge. The statement is correct, but the *inner\n*meaning is to this day a mystery. To elude further explanation\nof the difficulty by appealing to divine mystery, or to the sin\nof prying into its policy -- is to say nothing at all. It may\nprove sufficient to\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] *Phenomenal World,\n*and whose disposition is called Fate or Destiny.\" (*Section\n9, ch. *I, *ed. of *1579).\n\nHere it is evident that \"Mind\" (the primeval universal\nDivine Thought) is neither the Unknown unmanifested One, since\nit abounds in both sexes (is male and female), nor yet the Christian\nFather, as the latter is a male and not an androgyne. The fact\nis that the *Father, Son, and Man *are hopelessly mixed\nup in the translations of Pymander.\n\n* The allegory of the fire of Prometheus is another version of\nthe rebellion of the proud Lucifer, who was *hurled down to\nthe bottomless pit, *or simply unto our Earth, to live as\nman. The Hindu Lucifer, the *Mahasura, *is also said to\nhave become envious of the Creator's resplendent light, and, at\nthe head of inferior Asuras (not gods, but spirits), to have rebelled\nagainst Brahma; for which Siva hurled him down to Patala. But,\nas philosophy goes hand in hand with allegorical fiction in Hindu\nmyths, the *devil* is made to repent, and is afforded the\nopportunity to progress: he is a sinful man *esoterically,\n*and can by *yoga *devotion, and adeptship, reach his\nstatus of *one with the deity, *once more. Hercules, the\nSun-god, descends to Hades (the cave of Initiation) to deliver\nthe victims from their tortures, etc., etc. The Christian Church\nalone creates *eternal *torment for the devil and the damned,\nthat she has invented.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 238 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nbelievers in the Pope's infallibility, but will hardly satisfy\nthe philosophical mind. Yet the truth, although known to most\nof the higher Kabalists, has never been told by any of their number.\nOne and all, Kabalists and symbologists, showed an extraordinary\nreluctance to confess the primitive meaning of the Fall of the\nAngels. In a Christian such silence is only natural. Neither alchemist\nnor philosopher could, during the Mediaeval Ages, utter that*\nwhich in the sight of orthodox theology was a terrible blasphemy,\nfor it would have led them directly through the \"Holy\"\noffice of the Inquisition, to stake and rack. But for our modern\nKabalists and Freethinkers the case is different. With the latter,\nwe fear, it is merely human pride, vanity based on a loudly rejected\nand as ineradicable superstition. Since the Church, in her struggle\nwith Manichaeism, invented the devil, and by placing\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Why should, for instance, Eliphas Levi, the very *fearless\n*and outspoken Kabalist, have hesitated to divulge the mystery\nof the *Fallen* Angels so-called? That he knew the fact\nand real meaning of the allegory -- both in its religious and\nmystical, as well as in its physiological sense -- is proved by\nhis voluminous writings and frequent allusions and hints. Yet\nEliphas, after having alluded to it a hundred times in his previous\nworks, says in his latest \"*Histoire de la Magie,*\"*\n*p. 220 . . . \"We protest with all our might against\nthe sovereignty and the ubiquity of Satan. We *pretend neither\nto deny nor affirm here the tradition on the Fall of the Angels\n*. . . but if so, then the prince of the Angelic Rebels can\nbe at best the last and the most powerless among the condemned\n-- now that he is separated from deity -- which is the principle\nof every power. . . .\" This is hazy and evasive enough; but\nsee what Hargrave Jennings writes in his weird, *staccato-like\n*style: --\n\n\"Both Saint Michael and Saint George are types. They are\nsainted personages, or dignified heroes, or powers apotheosized.\nThey are each represented with their appropriate faculties and\nattributes. These are reproduced and stand multiplied -- distinguished\nby different names in all the mythologies . . . (including the\nChristian). . . .\n\nThe idea regarding each is a general one. This idea and representative\nnotion is that of the all-powerful champion -- child-like in his\n'Virgin innocence' -- so powerful that this god-filled innocence\n(the Seraphim 'Know most,' the Cherubim 'love most') can shatter\nthe world (articulated, so to use the word -- in the magic of\nLucifer, but condemned) in opposition to the artful constructions\n(this 'side-life') of the magnificent apostate, the mighty rebel,\nbut yet at the same time the 'Light-bringer,' the Lucifer, the\n'Morning Star,' the 'Son of the morning' -- the very highest title\n'out of heaven, 'for in heaven it cannot be, but out of heaven\nit is everything. In an apparently incredible side of his character\n-- qualities are of no sex -- this archangel, St. Michael, is\nthe *invincible, sexless, celestial *'Energy' -- to dignify\nhim by his grand characteristics -- the invisible 'Virgin Combatant,'\nclothed . . . and at the same time armed, in the denying mail\nof the Gnostic 'refusal to create.' This is another . . . 'myth\nwithin myths' . . . a stupendous 'mystery of mysteries,' because\nit is so impossible and contradictory. Unexplainable as the Apocalypse.\nUnrevealable as the 'Revelation' \"(*p*. 213).\n\nNevertheless, this *unexplainable and unrevealable *mystery\nwill now be explained and revealed by the doctrines of the East.\nBut as the very erudite, but still more puzzling author of \"Phallicism\"\ngives it, of course, no uninitiated mortal would ever understand\nthe real drift of his remarks.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 239 THEOLOGICAL SNUFFERS.\n\na theological extinguisher on the radiant star-god, *Lucifer,\n*the \"Son of the Morning,\" thus created the most\ngigantic of all her paradoxes -- *a black and tenebrous light\n-- *the myth has struck its roots too deep in the soil of\nblind faith to permit, in our age, even those, who do not acquiesce\nin her dogmas and laugh at her horned and cloven-footed Satan,\nto come out bravely and confess the antiquity of the oldest of\nall traditions. In a few brief words it is this. *Semi-exoterically,\n*the \"First-born\" of the Almighty -- *Fiat Lux,\n*-- or the angels of primordial light, were commanded *to\ncreate*;* *one third of them rebelled *and refused*;*\n*while those who \"obeyed as Fetahil did *-- failed*\"*\n*most signally.\n\nTo realise the refusal and failure in their correct physical meaning,\none must study and *understand *Eastern philosophy; one\nhas to be acquainted with the fundamental mystical tenets of the\nVedantins, with regard to the utter fallacy of attributing functional\nactivity to the infinite and absolute deity. Esoteric philosophy\nmaintains that during* *the *Sandhyas, *the \"Central\nSun\" emits *creative light -*- passively so to say.\n*Causality *is latent. It is only during the active periods\nof being that it gives rise to a stream of ceaseless energy, whose\nvibrating currents acquire more activity and potency with every\nrung of the hebdomadic ladder of Being which they descend. Hence\nit becomes comprehensible how the process of *creating, *or\nrather of fashioning, the organic Universe, with all its units\nof the seven kingdoms, necessitated intelligent beings -- who\nbecame collectively a Being or creative God -- differentiated\nalready from the one absolute Unity, unrelated as the latter is\nto conditioned creation.*\n\nNow the Vatican **MSS.** of the Kabala -- a single\ncopy of which (in Europe) is said to have been in the possession\nof Count St. Germain -- contains the most complete exposition\nof the doctrine, including the peculiar version accepted by the\nLuciferians** and other Gnostics; and in that parchment the *Seven\nSuns of Life *are given in the order they are found in the\n*Saptasurya. *Only four of these, however, are mentioned\nin the editions of the Kabala which are procurable in the public\nlibraries, and that even in a more or less veiled phraseology.\nNevertheless even this reduced number is amply sufficient to show\nan identical origin, as it refers to the quaternary group of the\nDhyan-Chohans, and proves the speculation to have had its origin\nin the Secret Doctrines of the Aryans.\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* \"Creation\" -- out of pre-existent eternal substance,\nor matter, of course, which substance, according to our teachings,\nis boundless, ever-existing space.\n\n** The Luciferians -- the sect of the fourth century who are alleged\nto have taught that the Soul was a *carnal *body transmitted\nto the child by its father; -- and that other religious and still\nearlier sect of the second century **A.D**., the\nLucianists, who taught all this, and further, that the *animal\n*Soul was not immortal, were philosophizing on the grounds\nof the real Kabalistic and Occult teachings.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 240 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nAs is well known, the Kabala never originated with the Jews, who\ngot their ideas from the Chaldeans and the Egyptians.\n\nThus even the now *exoteric *Kabalistic teachings speak\nof a *Central *Sun, and of three secondary suns in each\nsolar system -- our own included. As shown in that able though\ntoo materialistic work, \"*New Aspects of Life and Religion,*\"*\n*which is a *synopsis of the views *of the Kabalists\nin an aspect deeply thought out and assimilated: --\n\n\"The *Central Sun *. . . *was to them *(as\nmuch as to the Aryans) *the centre of Rest*;* *the\ncentre to which all motion was to be ultimately referred. Round\nthis central sun . . . 'the first of three systemic suns . . .\nrevolved on a polar plane . . . the second, on an equatorial plane'\n. . . and the third only was our visible sun. These four solar\nbodies were '*the organs on whose action what man calls the\ncreation, the evolution of life on the planet, earth, depends.*'*\n*The channels through which the influence of these bodies\nwas conveyed to the earth they (the Kabalists) held to be electrical\"\n(*p*. 287). . . . \"The radiant energy flowing from\nthe central sun* called the Earth into being as a watery globe,\"\nwhose tendency, \"as the nucleus of a planetary body, was\nto rush to the (central) Sun . . . . within the sphere of whose\nattraction it had been created,\" \"but the radiant energy,\nsimilarly electrifying both, withheld the one from the other,\nand so changed motion towards into motion round the centre of\nattraction, which the revolving planet (earth) thus sought to\nreach.\n\n\"In the organic cell the *visible sun *found its own\nproper matrix, and produced through this the animal (while maturing\nthe vegetable) Kingdom, finally placing man at its head, in whom,\nthrough the animating action of that Kingdom, it originated the\npsychic cell. But the man so placed at the head of the animal\nkingdom, at the head of the creation, was the animal, the *soul-less,\nthe perishable man*. . . . Hence man, although apparently\nits crown, would, by his advent have marked the close of creation;\nsince creation, culminating in him, would at his death have entered\non its decline\" . . . (*p*. 289).\n\nThis Kabalistic view is here quoted, to show its perfect identity\nin spirit with the Eastern doctrine. Explain, or complete the\nteaching of the seven Suns with the seven systems of *planes\nof being, *of which the \"Suns\" are the central bodies,\nand you have the seven angelic planes,\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* This \"central sun\" of the Occultists, which even Science\nis obliged to accept astronomically, for it cannot deny the presence\nin Sidereal Space of a central body in the milky way, a point\nunseen and mysterious, the ever-hidden centre of attraction of\nour Sun and system -- this \"Sun\" is viewed differently\nby the Occultists of the East. While the Western and Jewish Kabalists\n(and even some pious modern astronomers) claim that in this sun\nthe God-head is specially present -- referring to it the volitional\nacts of God -- the Eastern Initiates maintain that, as the *supradivine\n*Essence of the Unknown Absolute is equally in every domain\nand place, the \"Central Sun\" is simply the centre of\nUniversal life-Electricity; the reservoir within which that divine\nradiance, already differentiated at the beginning of every *creation,\n*is focussed. Though still in a *laya, *or neutral\ncondition, it is, nevertheless, the one attracting, as also the\never-emitting, life Centre.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 241 \"PRINCIPLES\" EXPLAINED.\n\nwhose \"Host\" are gods thereof, collectively. (*See\nComm. to Stanza VII Book I*.)* *They are the Head-group\ndivided into four classes from the *incorporeal *down to\nthe semi-corporeal, which classes are directly connected -- though\nin very different ways as regards voluntary connection and functions\n-- with our mankind. They are three, synthesized by the fourth\n(the first and highest), which is called the \"Central Sun\"\nin the Kabalistic doctrine just quoted. This is the great difference\nbetween the Semitic and the Aryan Cosmogony; one materializing,\nhumanizes the mysteries of nature; the other spiritualizes matter,\nand its physiology is always made subservient to metaphysics.\nThus, though the seventh principle reaches man through all the\nphases of being, pure as an indiscrete element and an impersonal\nunity, it passes through (the Kabala teaches *from*) the\nCentral Spiritual Sun and Group the second (the *polar *Sun),\nwhich two radiate on man his Atma. Group *Three *(the equatorial\nSun) cement the Buddhi to Atman and the higher attributes of *Manas,\n*while group Four (the spirit of our visible sun) endows him\nwith his Manas and its vehicle -- the *Kama rupa, *or body\nof passions and desires, the two elements of *Ahamkara *which\nevolve *individualized consciousness -- *the personal *ego.\n*Finally, it is the spirit of the Earth in its triple unity\nthat builds the physical body, attracting to it the Spirits of\nLife and forming his *Linga Sarira.*\n\nNow, as everything proceeds cyclically, the evolution of man like\neverything else, the order in which he is generated is described\nfully in the Eastern teachings, whereas it is only hinted at in\nthe Kabala. Says *the Book of Dzyan *with regard to primeval\nman when first projected by the \"Boneless,\" the incorporeal\nCreator: \"*First, the Breath, then Buddhi, and the Shadow-Son\n*(the Body)* were *'CREATED.' *But where was the\npivot *(the middle principle, Manas)? *Man is doomed. When\nalone, the indiscrete *(undifferentiated Element) *and\nthe Vahan *(Buddhi) -- *the cause of the causeless -- break\nasunder from manifested life*\"* -- *\"*unless\ncemented and held together by the middle principle, the vehicle\nof the personal consciousness of ***J**IVA\";\nexplains the Commentary. In other words, the two higher principles\n*can have no individuality on Earth, *cannot be *man,\n*unless there is (*a*)* *the Mind, the *Manas-Ego,\nto *cognize itself, and (*b*) the terrestrial *false\n*personality, or the body of egotistical desires and personal\nWill, to cement the whole, as if round a pivot (which it is, truly),\nto the physical form of man. Incarnate the Spiritual Monad of a Newton grafted on\nthat of the greatest saint on earth -- in a physical body the\nmost perfect you can think of -- *i.e.*, in a two or even\na three-principled body composed of its *Sthula Sarira, *prana\n(life principle), and *linga sarira -- *and, if it lacks\nits middle and fifth principles, you will have created *an\nidiot -- *at best a beautiful, soul-less, empty and unconscious\nappearance. \"*Cogito -- ergo sum*\"* -- *can\nfind no room in the brain of such a creature, not on this plane,\nat any rate.\n\nThere are students, however, who have long ago understood the\nphilosophical meaning underlying the allegory -- so tortured and\ndisfigured by the Roman Church -- of the *Fallen *Angels.\n\"The Kingdom of Spirits and spiritual action which flows\nfrom and is the product of Spirit Volition, is outside and contrasted\nwith and in contradiction to the Kingdom of (divine) Souls and\ndivine action.\"* As said in the text: --\n\n\"*Like produces like and no more at the genesis of being,\nand evolution with its limited conditioned laws comes later. The\nSelf-Existentt are called ***C***REATIONS,\nfor they appear in the Spirit Ray, manifested through the potency\ninherent in its UNBORN Nature, which is beyond time and *(limited\nor conditioned) *Space. Terrene products, animate and inanimate,\nincluding mankind, are falsely called creation and creatures:\nthey are the development *(*evolution*)* of the\ndiscrete elements.*\"* *(Com. xiv.) Again: --\n\n\"*The Heavenly rupa *(Dhyan Chohan) *creates*\n(*man*)* in his own form*;* it is a spiritual\nideation consequent on the first differentiation and awakening\nof the universal *(*manifested*)* Substance*;*\nthat form is the ideal shadow of Itself: and this is *THE\nMAN OF THE FIRST RACE.\"\n\nTo express it in still clearer form, limiting the explanation\nto this earth only, it was the duty of the first \"differentiated\nEgos\" -- the Church calls them Archangels -- to imbue primordial\nmatter with the evolutionary impulse and guide its formative powers\nin the fashioning of its productions. This it is which is referred\nto in the sentences both in the Eastern and Western tradition\n--\"the Angels were *commanded to create.*\"*\n*After the Earth had been made ready by the *lower *and\nmore material powers, and its three Kingdoms fairly started on\ntheir way to be \"fruitful and multiply,\" the higher\npowers, the Archangels or Dhyanis, were compelled by the evolutionary\nLaw to descend on Earth, in order to construct the crown of its\nevolution -- MAN. But, agreeably to esoteric\ninterpretation, it was a self-sacrifice for the benefit of mankind.\nThe \"Rebels\" would not create will-less irresponsible\nmen, as the \"obedient\" angels did; nor could they endow\nhuman beings with only the temporary reflections of their own\nattributes; for even the latter, belonging to another and a so-much\nhigher plane of consciousness, would leave man still irresponsible,\nhence interfere with any possibility of a higher progress. No\nspiritual and psychic evolution is possible on earth -- the lowest\nand most material plane -- for one who on that plane, at all events,\nis inherently *perfect *and cannot accumulate either merit\nor demerit. Man remaining the pale shadow of the inert, immutable,\nand motionless perfection, the one negative and passive attribute\nof the real *I am that I am, *would have been doomed to\npass through life on earth as in a heavy dreamless sleep; hence\na failure on this plane. The Beings, or the Being, collectively\ncalled Elohim, who first (if ever) pronounced the cruel words,\n\"Behold, the man is become *as one of us, *to know\ngood and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also\nof the tree of life and eat and live for ever . . . \" must\nhave been indeed the Ilda-baoth, the *Demiurge *of the\nNazarenes, filled with rage and envy against his own creature,\nwhose reflection created *Ophiomorphos. *In this case it\nis but natural -- even from the dead letter standpoint -- to view\n*Satan, *the Serpent of Genesis, as the real creator and\nbenefactor, the Father of Spiritual mankind. For it is he who\nwas the \"Harbinger of Light,\" bright radiant Lucifer,\nwho opened the eyes of the automaton *created *by Jehovah,\nas alleged; and he who was the first to whisper: \"in the\nday ye eat thereof ye shall be as Elohim, knowing good and evil\"\n-- can only be regarded in the light of a Saviour. An \"adversary\"\nto Jehovah the \"*personating *spirit,\" he still\nremains in esoteric truth the ever-loving \"Messenger\"\n(the angel), the Seraphim and Cherubim who both *knew *well,\nand *loved *still more, and who conferred on us spiritual,\ninstead of physical immortality -- the latter a kind *of static\n*immortality that would have transformed man into an undying\n\"Wandering Jew.\"\n\nAs narrated in King's \"Gnostics,\" \"Ilda-Baoth,\nwhom several sects regarded as the God of Moses, was not a pure\nspirit, he was ambitious and proud, and rejecting the spiritual\nlight of the middle space offered him by his mother Sophia-Achamoth,\nhe set himself to create a world of his own. Aided by his sons,\nthe six planetary genii, he fabricated man,\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 244 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nbut this one proved a failure. It was a monster, soulless, ignorant,\nand crawling on all fours on the ground like a material beast.\nIlda-Baoth was forced to implore the help of his spiritual mother.\nShe communicated to him a ray of her divine light, and so animated\nman and endowed him with a soul. And now began the animosity of\nIlda-Baoth toward his own creature. Following the impulse of the\ndivine light, man soared higher and higher in his aspirations;\nvery soon he began presenting not the image of his creator Ilda-Baoth\nbut rather that of the Supreme Being, the 'primitive man,' Ennoia.\nThen the Demiurgos was filled with rage and envy; and fixing his\njealous eye on the abyss of matter, his looks envenomed with passion\nwere suddenly reflected as in a mirror; the reflection became\nanimate, and there arose out of the abyss Satan, serpent, Ophiomorphos\n-- 'the embodiment of envy and cunning. He is the union of all\nthat is most base in matter, with the hate, envy, and craft of\na spiritual intelligence.' \" This is the exoteric rendering\nof the Gnostics, and the allegory, though a *sectarian *version,\nis suggestive, and seems true to life. It is the natural deduction\nfrom the dead letter text of chapter iii. of Genesis.\n\nHence the allegory of Prometheus, who steals the divine fire so\nas to allow men to proceed consciously on the path of spiritual\nevolution, thus transforming the most perfect of *animals *on\nearth into a potential god, and making him free to \"take\nthe kingdom of heaven by violence.\" Hence also, the *curse\n*pronounced by Zeus against Prometheus, and by Jehovah-Il-da-Baoth\nagainst his \"rebellious son,\" Satan. The cold, pure\nsnows of the Caucasian mountain and the never-dying, singeing\nfire and flames of an extinguishable hell. Two poles, yet the\nsame idea; the dual aspect of a refined torture: a *fire producer\n-- *the personified emblem of [[*Phosphoros*]] of the\nastral fire and light in the *anima mundi -- *(that element\nof which the German materialist philosopher Moleschott said: \"ohne\n*phosphor *kein gedanke,\" *i.e.*, without phosphorus\nno thought), burning in the fierce flames of his terrestrial passions;\nthe conflagration fired by his *Thought, *discerning as\nit now does good from evil, and yet a slave to the passions of\nits earthly Adam; feeling the vulture of doubt and full consciousness\ngnawing at its heart -- a* Prometheus indeed, because a conscious,\n*hence a *responsible *entity.* The curse of *life\n*is great, yet how few are those men, outside some Hindu and\nSufi mystics, who would exchange all the tortures of conscious\nlife, all the evils of a responsible existence, for the unconscious\nperfection of a passive (objectively) *in*cor*poreal\n*being, or even the universal static Inertia personified in\nBrahma during his \"night's\" rest. Jules Baissac calls it, the 'Centrifugal Energy of the Universe'\nin a cosmic sense. He is Fire, Light, Life, Struggle, Effort,\nThought, Consciousness, Progress, Civilization, Liberty, Independence.\nAt the same time he is pain, which is the Re-action of the *pleasure\n*of action, and *death -*- which is the revolution\nof *life *-- Satan, burning in his own hell, produced by\nthe fury of his own momentum -- the expansive disintegration of\nthe nebulae which is to concentrate into new worlds. And fitly\nis he again and again baffled by the eternal *Inertia *of\nthe *passive *energy of the Kosmos -- the inexorable '*I\nAM*'* -- *the flint from which the sparks are beaten\nout. Fitly is he . . . and his adherents . . . consigned to the\n'sea of fire,' because it is the *Sun *(in one sense only\nin the Cosmic allegory), the fount of life in *our system,\n*where they are purified (disintegrated) and churned up to\nre-arrange them for another life (the resurrection); that *Sun*\nwhich, as the origin of the active principle of our Earth, is\nat once the *Home *and the *Source *of the Mundane\nSatan. . . .\" To demonstrate furthermore the accuracy of\nBaissac's general theory (in *Le Diable et Satan*)*\n*cold is known to have a 'Centripetal' effect. \"Under\nthe influence of cold everything contracts. . . . Under it *life\nhybernates, *or dies out, thought congeals, and fire is extinguished.\nSatan is immortal in his own Fire-Sea -- it is only in the 'Nifl-heim'\n(the cold Hell of the Scandinavian *Eddas*) of the '*I\nAM*'* *that he cannot exist. But for all that there\nis a kind of *Immortal Existence *in the Nifl-heim, and\nthat existence must be *painless and peaceful, *because\nit is *Unconscious and Inactive. *In the Kingdom of *Jehovah\n*(if this God were all that the Jews and Christians claim\nfor him) there is no Misery, no War, no marrying and giving in\nmarriage, no change, no *Individual Consciousness.***\n*All is absorbed in the spirit of the most Powerful. *It\nis emphatically a kingdom of Peace and loyal Submission as that\nof the *'*Arch-Rebel*'* is one of War and Revolution*.\n. . . . Furnished with all\nthe esoteric data to write his \"War in Heaven,\" he made\na semi-political article out of it, mixing Malthus with Satan,\nand Darwin with the astral light. Peace be to his *-- Shell.\n*He is a warning to the chelas who fail. We have quoted from\nthis article to show where it dissents from theosophic teachings;\notherwise it would be quoted some day against us, as everything\npublished in the *Theosophist *generally is.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 246 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nformer) is in fact what Theosophy calls *Nirvana. *But\nthen Theosophy teaches that separation from the *Primal Source\nhaving once occurred, *Re-union can only be achieved *by\nWill -- Effort *-- which is distinctly *Satanic *in\nthe sense of this essay.\"\n\n*It is *\"Satanic\" from the standpoint of orthodox\nRomanism, for it is owing to the prototype of that which became\nin time the Christian Devil -- to the Radiant Archangels, Dhyans-Chohans,\nwho refused to create, because they wanted Man *to become his\nown creator *and an immortal god -- that men can reach *Nirvana\n*and the haven of heavenly divine Peace.\n\nTo close this rather lengthy comment, the Secret Doctrine teaches\nthat the Fire-Devas, the Rudras, and the Kumaras, the \"Virgin-Angels,\"\n(to whom Michael and Gabriel, the Archangels, both belong), the\ndivine \"Rebels\" -- called by the *all-materializing\n*and positive Jews, the *Nahash *or \"Deprived\"\n-- preferred the *curse of incarnation *and the long cycles\nof terrestrial existence and rebirths, to seeing the misery (even\nif *unconscious*)* *of the beings (evolved as shadows\nout of their Brethren) through the semi-passive energy of their\n*too spiritual *Creators. If \"man's uses of life should\nbe such as neither to animalize nor to spiritualize, but to *humanize\n*Self,\"* before he can do so, he must be born *human\n*not angelic. Hence, tradition shows the celestial *Yogis\n*offering themselves as voluntary victims in order to redeem\nHumanity -- created god-like and perfect at first -- and to endow\nhim with human affections and aspirations. To do this they had\nto give up their natural status and, descending on our globe,\ntake up their abode on it for the whole cycle of the Mahayuga,\nthus exchanging their impersonal individualities for individual\npersonalities -- the bliss of sidereal existence for the curse\nof terrestrial life. This voluntary sacrifice of the Fiery Angels,\nwhose nature was *Knowledge and Love, *was construed by\nthe exoteric theologies into a statement that shows \"the\nrebel angels hurled down from heaven into the darkness of Hell\"\n-- our Earth. Hindu philosophy hints at the truth by teaching\nthat the *Asuras *hurled down by Siva, are only in an *intermediate\nstate *in which they prepare for higher degrees of purification\nand redemption from their\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Explaining the Kabala, Dr. H. Pratt says, \"Spirit was to\nman (to the Jewish Rabbin, rather?) a bodiless, disembodied, or\ndeprived, and degraded being, and hence was termed by the ideograph\n*Nahash *'Deprived;' represented as appearing to and seducing\nthe human race -- men through the Woman. . . . Symbol for\nsymbol there are those who would prefer that of the serpent --\nthe symbol of wisdom and eternity, deprived of limbs as it is\n-- to the Jod ( ) -- the\npoetical ideograph of Jehovah in the Kabala -- the god of the\nmale symbol of generation.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 247 THE CURSE OF VASISHTA.\n\nwretched condition; but Christian theology, claiming to be based\non the rock of divine love, charity, and justice of him it appeals\nto as its Saviour -- has invented, to enforce that claim paradoxically,\nthe dreary dogma of hell, that Archimedean lever of Roman Catholic\nphilosophy.\n\nAs to Rabbinical Wisdom -- than which there is none more positive,\nmaterialistic, or grossly terrestrial, as it brings everything\ndown to physiological mysteries -- it calls these Beings, the\n\"Evil One;\" and the Kabalists *-- Nahash, *\"Deprived,\"\nas just said, and the *Souls, *that have thrown themselves,\n*after having been alienated in Heaven from the Holy One*,\ninto an abyss at the dawn of their very existence, and have anticipated\nthe time when they are to descend on earth. (*Zohar *iii.,\n61, *C.*)\n\nAnd let me explain at once that our quarrel is not with the *Zohar\n*and the Kabala in their right interpretation -- for the latter\nis ours -- but only with the gross, *pseudo*-esoteric explanations\nof the later, and especially those of the Christian Kabalists.\n\n\"*Our earth and man,*\"* *says the Commentary,\n\"*being the products of the three Fires*\"*\n-- *whose three names answer, in Sanskrit, to \"*the\nelectric fire, the Solar fire, and the fire produced by friction,*\"*\n-- *these three fires, explained on the Cosmic and human planes,\nare Spirit, Soul, and Body, the three great Root groups, with\ntheir four additional divisions. These vary with the Schools,\nand become -- according to their applications -- the* upadhis\n*and the *vehicles, *or the *noumena *of these.\nIn the exoteric accounts, they are personified by the \"three\nsons of surpassing brilliancy and splendour\" of Agni Abhimanin,\nthe eldest son of Brahma, the *Cosmic ***L**OGOS,\nby *Swaha, *one of Daksha's* daughters. In the metaphysical\nsense the \"Fire of friction\" means the Union between\n*Buddhi, *the sixth, and *Manas, *the fifth, principles,\nwhich thus are united or cemented together; the fifth merging\npartially into and becoming part of the *monad*;* *in\nthe physical, it relates to the *creative spark, *or germ,\nwhich fructifies and generates the human being. The three Fires,\nit is said (whose names are Pavaka, Pavamana and Suchi) were condemned\nby a curse of Vasishta, the great sage, \"*to be born over\nand over again.*\"* *(Bhagavata-Purana iv. 24,\n4.) This is clear enough.\n\nTherefore, the *FLAMES, *whose functions are confused in\nthe exoteric books, and who are called indifferently Prajapati,\nPitris, Manus, Asuras,\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Daksha, the \"intelligent, the competent.\" \"This\nname generally carries with it the idea of *creative power.*\"*\n*He is a son of Brahma, and of Aditi, and agreeably to other\nversions, a self-born power, which, like Minerva, sprang from\nhis father's body. He is the chief of the *Prajapati* --\nthe Lords or Creators of Being. In Vishnu Purana, *Parasara\n*says of him, \"in every Kalpa (or manvantara) Daksha\nand the rest are born and are again destroyed.\" And the Rig-Veda\nsays that \"Daksha sprang from Aditi and Aditi from Daksha,\"\na reference to the eternal cyclic re-birth of the same divine\nEssence.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 248 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nRishis, Kumaras,* etc. etc., are said to incarnate personally\nin the Third Root-Race and thus find themselves \"reborn over\nand over again.\" In the Esoteric doctrine they are generally\nnamed the Asuras, or the *Asu-ra Devata *or *Pitar-devata\n*(gods) for, as said, they were first Gods -- and the highest\n-- before they became \"*no*-gods,\" and had from\nSpirits of Heaven fallen into Spirits of the Earth** *-- exoterically,\n*note well, in orthodox dogma.\n\nNo Theologian, any more than an Orientalist, can ever understand\nthe genealogies of the Prajapati, the Manus, and the Rishis, nor\nthe direct connection of these -- or their correlation rather\n-- with the Gods, unless he has the key to the old primitive Cosmogony\nand Theogony, which all the Nations originally had in common.\nAll these gods and demi-gods are found reborn on earth, in various\nKalpas and in as various characters; each, moreover, *having\nhis Karma distinctly traced, and every effect assigned to its\ncause.*\n\nBefore other Stanzas could be explained, it was, as seen, absolutely\nnecessary to show that the sons of \"Dark Wisdom,\" though\nidentical with the Archangels which Theology has chosen to call\nthe \"Fallen,\" are as divine and as pure and more so\nthan all the Michaels and Gabriels so glorified in the churches.\nThe \"old Book\" goes into various details of Astral life,\nwhich at this juncture would be quite incomprehensible to the\nreader. It may, therefore, be left for later explanations, and\nthe First and Second Races can now only receive bare notice. Not\nso for the Third Race -- the Root-Race which separated into sexes,\nand which was the first to be endowed with reason. Men evolving\n*pari passu *with the globe, and the latter having \"incrustated\"\nmore than a hundred million of years before -- the first human\nsub-race had already begun to materialize or solidify, so to say.\nBut, as the *Stanza *has it: \"*the inner man *(the\nconscious Entity) *was not.*\"* *This \"Conscious\nEntity\" Occultism says, comes from, nay, in many cases *is,\n*the very entire essence and *esse *of the high Intelligences\ncondemned, by the undeviating law of Karmic evolution, to reincarnate\nin this manvantara.\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* No one of these orders is distinct from the Pitris or Progenitors,\nas says Manu (iii. 284). \"The wise call our fathers Vasus;\nour paternal grandfathers, Rudras; our paternal great grandfathers,\nAdityas; agreeably to a text of the Vedas,\" or \"this\nis an everlasting Vedic text\" in another translation.\n\n** As now discovered by the late G. Smith in the Babylonian cylinder\nliterature, it was the same in Chaldean theogony. Below these again various classes of Spirits and \"Genii\"\ncalled Sadu, Vadukku, Ekimu, Gallu -- of which some were good,\nsome evil. (See \"*Babylonian Mythology.*\")\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 249 SCIENTIFIC ANTHROPOLOGY IN THE PURANAS.\n\n(*b*) This verse (thirty-ninth) relates exclusively to\nthe racial divisions. Strictly speaking, esoteric philosophy teaches\na modified polygenesis. For, while it assigns to humanity a oneness\nof origin, in so far that its forefathers or \"Creators\"\nwere all divine beings -- though of different classes or degrees\nof perfection in their hierarchy -- men were nevertheless born\non seven different centres of the continent of that period. Though\nall of one common origin, yet for reasons given their potentialities\nand mental capabilities, outward or physical forms, and future\ncharacteristics, were very different.* As to their complexions,\nthere is a suggestive allegory told in *Linga Purana. *The\n*Kumdra* -- the Rudra gods, so called (*see* *further*),*\n*are described as incarnations of Siva, the *destroyer\n*(of* outward forms*), named also Vamadeva. The latter,\nas a *Kumara, *the \"Eternal Celibate,\" the chaste\nVirgin youth, springs from Brahma in each great Manvantara, and\n\"again becomes four\"; a reference to the *four great\ndivisions of *the human races, as regards complexion and type\n-- and three chief variations of these. For, it is only at that period that the last transformation\ntook place, which brought forth man as he is now, only on a magnified\nscale. This Race gave birth to the Fourth Race; \"Siva\"\ngradually transforming that portion of Humanity which became \"black\nwith sin\" into *red-yellow *(the red Indians and the\nMongolians being the descendants of these) and finally into Brown-white\nraces -- which now, together with the yellow Races, form the great\nbulk of Humanity. The allegory in *Linga Purana *is curious,\nas showing the great ethnological knowledge of the ancients.\n\nWhen reading of \"the last transformation,\" let the reader\nconsider at this juncture, if that took place 18,000,000 years\nago, how many millions more it must have required to reach that\nfinal stage? And if man, in his gradual consolidation, developed\n*pari passu *with the earth, how many millions of years\nmust have elapsed during the *First, Second, *and the first\nhalf of the *Third *Race? For the Earth was in a comparatively\nethereal condition before it reached its last consolidated state;\nthe archaic teachings, moreover, telling us that, during the middle\nperiod of the Lemuro-Atlantean Race, three and a half Races after\nthe Genesis of man, the Earth, man, and everything on the Globe\nwas of a still grosser and more material nature, while such things\nas corals and some shells were still in a semi-gelatinous, astral\nstate. The cycles that intervened since then, have already carried\nus onward, on the opposite ascending arc, some steps toward our\n*dematerialization, *as the spiritualists would say. The\nEarth, ourselves, and all things have softened since then -- aye,\neven our brains. But it has been objected by some theosophists\nthat an ethereal Earth even some 15, or 20,000,000 years ago,\n*does not square with Geology, *which teaches us that winds\nblew, rains fell, waves broke on the shore, sands shifted and\naccumulated,\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* It must be remembered that the \"last remnants\" here\nspoken of, refer to those portions of the \"great continent\"\nwhich still remained, and not to any of the numerous islands which\nexisted contemporaneously with the continent. An occult \"tradition\"\nteaches that such submersions occur whenever there is an eclipse\nof the \"spiritual sun.\"\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 251 ANSWERS TO OBJECTIONS.\n\netc., etc., that, in short, all natural causes now in operation\nwere then in force, \"*in the very earliest ages of geological\ntime, *aye, that of the oldest palaeozoic rocks.\" To\nthis the following answers are given. *Firstly, *what is\nthe date assigned by geology to those \"oldest palaezoic rocks\"?\nAnd* secondly, *why could not the winds blow, rain fall,\nand waves (of *carbonic acid *apparently, as science seems\nto imply) break on the shore, on an Earth semi-astral, *i.e*.,\nviscid? The word \"astral\" does not necessarily mean\nas thin as smoke, in occult phraseology, but rather \"starry,\"\nshining or pellucid, in various and numerous degrees, from a quite\nfilmy to a viscid state, as just observed. But it is further objected:\nHow could an astral *Earth *have affected the other planets\nin this system? Would not the whole process get out of gear now\nif the attraction of one planet was suddenly removed? The objection\nis evidently invalid, since our system is composed of older and\nyounger planets, some dead (like the moon), others in process\nof formation, for all astronomy knows to the contrary. Nor has\nthe latter ever affirmed, so far as we know, that all the bodies\nof our system have sprung into existence and developed simultaneously.\nThe Cis-Himalayan secret teachings differ from those of India\nin this respect. Hindu Occultism teaches that the Vaivasvata Manu\nHumanity is eighteen million and odd years old.
