Blavatsky -- Vol.\n2\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 307 THE SEVEN AND FOURTEEN MANUS.\n\n**T**HE **P**RIMEVAL **M**ANUS\nOF **H**UMANITY.\n\nThose who are aware that the \"great Flood,\" which was\nconnected with the sinking of an entire continent -- save what\nbecame a few islands -- could not have happened so far back as\n18,000,000 years ago; and that Vaivasvata Manu is the Indian Noah\nconnected with the *Matsya *(or the fish) Avatar of Vishnu\n-- may feel perplexed at this discrepancy between facts stated\nand the chronology previously given. But there is no discrepancy\nin truth. The reader is asked to turn to the *Theosophist*\nof July, 1883, and after studying the article therein, \"The\nSeptenary Principle in Esotericism,\" the whole question can\nbe explained to him. It is in this explanation, I believe, that\nthe Occultists differ from the Brahmins.\n\nFor the benefit of those, however, who may not have \"The\nTheosophist\" of that month and year to hand, a passage or\ntwo may now be quoted from it:\n\n\"Who was Manu, the son of Swayambhuva? The secret doctrine\ntells us that *this *Manu was no man, but the representation\nof the first human races evolved with the help of the Dhyan-Chohans\n(*Devas*) at the beginning of the first round. But we are\ntold in his Laws (*Book I. *80) that there are fourteen Manus\nfor every Kalpa -- or interval from creation to creation (read\ninterval from one *minor* 'Pralaya' to another*) -- and that\nin the present divine age, there have been as yet *seven *Manus.\nThose who know that there are seven rounds, of which we have passed\nthree, and are now in the fourth; and who are\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* *Pralaya* -- a word already explained -- is not a term\nthat applies *only *to every \"Night of Brahma,\"\nor the world's dissolution following every Manvantara, equal to\n71 Maha-yugas. It applies also to each \"obscuration\"\nas well, and even to every Cataclysm that puts an end, by Fire\nor by Water in turn, to each Root-Race. *Pralaya* is a\nterm like that of \"Manu\" -- the generic name for the\n*Sishtas, *who, under the appellation of \"King,\"\nare shown in *the Puranas *as preserved \"with the\nseed of all things in an ark from the waters of that flood\"\n(or the fires of a general volcanic conflagration, the commencement\nof which we already see for our Fifth-Race in the terrible earthquakes\nand eruptions of these late years, and especially in the present\none) . . . . which in the season of a pralaya overspreads the\nworld\" (the Earth). (*See Preface,* *p. lxxxi.*,\nto Wilson's \"*Vishnu Purana.*\") Time is only\na form of \"Vishnu\" -- truly, as Parasara says in that\nPurana. In the Hindu Yuga Kalpa, we have the regular descending\nseries 4, 3, 2, with ciphers multiplied as occasion requires for\nesoteric purposes, but not, as Wilson and other Orientalists thought,\nfor \"sectarian embellishments.\" A Kalpa may be an age,\na \"Day\" of Brahma, or a sidereal Kalpa, astronomical\nand earthly. Those calculations are found in all the Puranas,\nbut some differ -- as for instance, \"the year of the seven\nRishis, 3,030 mortal years, and the year of Dhruva, 9,090 in the\nLinga Purana,\" which are again esoteric, and which *do*\nrepresent actual (secret) chronology. As said in the *Brahma\nVaivarta: *\"Chronologers compute a Kalpa by the life\nof Brahma. *Minor *Kalpas, as Samvarta and the rest, are\nnumerous.\" \"*Minor* Kalpas\" denote here\nevery period of destruction, as was well understood by Wilson\nhimself, who explains the latter as \"those in which the Samvarta\nwind or other destructive agents operate\" (*Vishnu Purana,\np. *54*, vol. I*.).\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 308 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\ntaught that there are seven dawns and seven twilights or fourteen*\nManvantaras; *that at the beginning of every Round and at the\nend, and on, and between the planets there is an awakening to\n*illusive *life, and an awakening to *real *life; and\nthat, moreover, there are root-Manus, and what we have to clumsily\ntranslate as the seed-Manus -- *the* *seeds for the human\nraces of* *the forthcoming *Round (or the *Sishtas --\n*the* *surviving fittest*; a mystery divulged only to\nthose who have passed their third degree in initiation) -- those\nwho have learned all that will be better prepared to understand\nthe meaning of the following. We are told in the Sacred Hindu\nscriptures that the first Manu produced *six* other Manus\n(*seven* primary Manus in all), and these produced in their\nturn each seven other Manus** (*Bhrigu I, *61-63) -- the\nproduction of the latter standing in the occult treatises as 7\nx 7. Thus it becomes clear that Manu -- the last one, the progenitor\nof our Fourth Round Humanity -- must be the *seventh, *since\nwe are on our fourth Round,*** and there is a *root*-Manu\nat globe A and a *seed *Manu at globe G. Just as each planetary\nRound commences with the appearance of a 'Root Manu' (Dhyan Chohan)\nand closes with a 'Seed-Manu,' so a *Root *and a *Seed\n*Manu appear respectively at the beginning and the termination\nof the human period on any particular planet.**** It will be easily\nseen from the foregoing statement that a* Manu-antaric *period\nmeans, as the term implies, the time *between *the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* An intuition and a presentiment of the Sishtas may be found\nin Mr. Sinnett's \"Esoteric Buddhism, \"Fifth Edition.\nSee in it *Annotations* -- the \"Noah's Ark Theory\"\npp. 146, 147.\n\n** The fact that Manu himself is made to declare that he was created\nby Viraj, and that he then produced the ten Prajapatis, who again\nproduced seven Manus, who in their turn gave birth to seven other\nManus (*Manu, I, *33-36) relates to other still earlier\nmysteries, and is at the same time a *blind* with regard\nto the doctrine of the Septenary chain, and the simultaneous evolution\nof seven humanities, or **M**EN. However, the present\nwork is written on the records of Cis-Himalayan Secret Teachings,\nand Brahmanical esoteric philosophy may now differ in form as\nthe Kabala does. But they were identical in hoary antiquity.\n\n*** There is another *esoteric *reason besides this one\nfor it. A Vaivasvata is the *seventh *Manu, because this\nour Round, although the Fourth, is in the *preseptenary*\nManvantara, and the Round itself is in its *seventh *stage\nof materiality or physicality. The close of its middle racial\npoint occurred during the Fourth Root Race, when man and all nature\nreached their lowest state of gross matter. From that time, *i.e.*,\nfrom the end of the three and a half races, humanity and nature\nentered on the ascending arc of their racial cycle.\n\n**** The interval that precedes each Yuga is called a *Sandhya,\n*composed of as many hundreds of years as there are thousands\nin the yuga; and that which follows the latter is named *Sandhyamsa,\n*and is of similar duration, we are told in *Vishnu Purana.\n*\"The interval between the Sandhya and the Sandhyamsa\nis the yuga denominated Krita, Treta, etc., etc. The (four) Krita,\nTreta, Dwapara, and Kali constitute a great age, or aggregate\nof four ages: a 1000 such aggregates are a Day of Brahma; and\n14 *Manus* *reign within that term*.\" Now had\nwe to accept this literally then there would be only one Manu\nfor every 4,320,000,000 of years. As we are taught that it took\n300,000,000 of years for the two lower kingdoms to evolve, and\nthat our humanity is just 18 and some odd millions old -- where\nwere the other Manus spoken of, unless the allegory means what\nthe esoteric doctrine teaches us about the 14 being each multiplied\nby 49.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 309 THE BLINDS OF EXOTERICISM.\n\nappearance of two Manus or Dhyan Chohans; and hence a minor *Manvantara*\nis the duration of the *seven *races on any particular planet,\nand a major manvantara is the period of one human round along\nthe Planetary chain. Moreover, that, as it is said that each of\nthe seven Manus *creates *7 x 7 Manus, and that there are\n49 root-races on the seven planets during each Round, then every\nroot-race has its Manu. The present seventh Manu is called 'Vaivasvata'\nand stands in the exoteric texts for that Manu who represents\nin India the Babylonian Xisuthrus and the Jewish Noah. But in\nthe esoteric books we are told that Manu Vaivasvata, the progenitor\nof our *Fifth *race -- who saved it from the flood that nearly\nexterminated the Fourth (Atlantis) -- is not the seventh Manu,\nmentioned in the nomenclature of the Root, or primitive-Manus,\nbut one of the 49 Manus emanated from this Root-Manu.\n\n\"For clearer comprehension we here give the names of the\n14 Manus in their respective order and relation to each Round:\n--\n\n\"Vaivasvata, thus, though seventh in the order given, is\nthe primitive Root-Manu of our fourth Human Wave (the reader must\nalways remember that Manu is not a man but collective humanity),\nwhile* our* Vaivasvata was but one of the seven *Minor\n*Manus, who are made to preside over the seven races of this\nour planet. Each of these has to become the witness of one of\nthe periodical and ever-recurring cataclysms (by fire and water)\nthat close the cycle of every Root-race. And it is this Vaivasvata\n-- the Hindu ideal embodiment, called respectively Xisuthrus,\nDeukalion, Noah and by other names -- who is the allegorical man\nwho rescued our race, when nearly the whole population of one\nhemisphere perished by water, while the other hemisphere was awakening\nfrom its temporary obscuration.\"*\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The words \"creation,\" \"dissolution,\" etc.,\ndo not render correctly the right meaning of either Manvantara\nor Pralaya. The *Vishnu Purana *enumerates several: The\ndissolution of all things is of four kinds, Parasara is made to\n*say: -- Naimittika* (occasional), when Brahma slumbers\n(his night, when, \"At the end of this day occurs a re-coalescence\n*of the Universe, *called Brahma's contingent re-coalescence,\"\nbecause Brahma *is* this universe itself); \"*Prakritika*\n(elemental), when the return of this universe to its original\nnature is partial and physical; *Atyantika* (absolute),\nidentification of *the embodied *with the incorporeal Supreme\nspirit -- Mahatmic state, whether temporary or until the following\n*Maha Kalpa: *also absolute obscuration -- as of a whole\n[[Footnote continued on next page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 310 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nThus it is shown that there is no real discrepancy in speaking\nof the Vaivasvata Manvantara (*Manu-antara, *lit. \"between\ntwo Manus\") 18,000,000 odd years ago, when physical, or the\ntruly human man first appeared in his Fourth Round on this earth;\nand of the other Vaivasvatas, *e.g., *the Manu of the Great\nCosmic or sidereal Flood (a mystery), or again the Manu Vaivasvata\nof the submerged Atlantis, when the *racial* Vaivasvata\nsaved the elect of Humanity, the Fifth Race, from utter destruction.\nAs the several (and quite different) events are purposely blended\nin the *Vishnu *and other Puranas in one narrative, there\nmay yet be a great deal of perplexity left in the profane reader's\nmind. Therefore, as constant elucidation is needed, we must be\nforgiven unavoidable repetitions. The blinds which conceal the\nreal mysteries of Esoteric philosophy are great and puzzling,\nand even now the last word cannot be given. The veil, however,\nmay be a little more removed and some explanations, hitherto denied,\nmay now be offered to the earnest student.\n\nAs somebody -- Colonel Vans Kennedy, if we do not mistake -- remarked,\n\"the first principle in Hindu religious philosophy is *Unity\nin* *diversity.*\"* *If all those Manus\nand Rishis are called by one generic name, this is due to the\nfact that they are one and all the manifested Energies of one\nand the same **L**OGOS, the celestial, as well as\nthe terrestrial messengers and permutations of that Principle\nwhich is ever in a state of activity; conscious during the period\nof Cosmic evolution, unconscious (from our point of view) during\nCosmic rest, as the Logos sleepeth in the bosom of THAT which\n\"sleepeth not,\" nor is it ever awake -- for it is SAT\nor *Be-ness, *not a Being. It is from IT that issues the\ngreat unseen Logos, who evolves all the other *logoi, *the\nprimeval **M**ANU who gives being to the other Manus,\nwho emanate the universe and all in it collectively, and who represent\nin their aggregate the *manifested *Logos.* Hence we learn\nin the \"Commentaries\" that while no Dhyan Chohan, not\neven the highest, can realise completely \"the condition of\nthe preceding Cosmic evolution,\" \"the Manus retain a\nknowledge of their experiences of all the Cosmic evolutions throughout\nEternity.\" This is very plain: the first Manu is called *Swayambhuva,*\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] planetary chain, etc.;\nand *Nitya *(perpetual) *Mahapralaya *for the Universe,\n*death -- *for man, *nitya* is the extinction of\nlife, like the extinction of a lamp,\" also \"in sleep\nat night.\" *Nitya Sarga *is \"constant or perpetual\ncreation,\" as *Nitya pralaya *is \"constant or\nperpetual destruction of all that is born.\" \"That which\nensues after a minor dissolution is called ephemeral creation.\n. . . This is Samyama\" (production, existence, and dissolution)\n(*Vishnu Purana, Book I., ch. vii.*) The subject is so\ndifficult that we are obliged to repeat our statements.\n\n* But see the superb definitions of Parabrahmam and the Logos\nin Mr. Subba Row's Lectures on the *Bhagavat Gita *in the\nearly numbers of the Theosophist of 1887, Feb., March, April,\nand May.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 311 THE FOUR EARLIER RACES.\n\n\"the Self-manifested,\" the Son of the *unmanifested\n***F**ATHER. The Manus are the creators of the\ncreators of our First Race -- the Spirit of mankind -- which does\nnot prevent the *seven *Manus from having been the first\n\"pre-Adamic\" men on Earth.\n\nManu declares himself created by Viraj,* or Vaiswanara, (the Spirit\nof Humanity),** which means that his Monad emanates from the never\nresting Principle in the beginning of every new Cosmic activity:\nthat *Logos *or **U**NIVERSAL **M**ONAD\n(collective Elohim) that radiates *from* *within himself\nall *those Cosmic Monads that become the centres of activity\n-- progenitors of the numberless Solar systems as well as of the\nyet undifferentiated *human* monads of planetary chains\nas well as of every being thereon. Each Cosmic Monad is \"Swayambhuva,\"\nthe SELF-BORN, *which becomes the Centre of Force, from within\nwhich* *emerges a planetary chain *(of which chains\nthere are seven in our system), and whose radiations become again\nso many Manus Swayambhuva (a generic name, mysterious and meaning\nfar more than appears), each of these becoming, as a *Host,\n*the Creator of his own Humanity. (*See *\"*The\nManus and the Manvantaras Explained by a Western Mystic* *and\nMathematician.*\")\n\nAs to the question of the four distinct races of mankind that\npreceded our Fifth Race, there is nothing mystical in it, except\nthe ethereal bodies of the first races; and it is a matter of\nlegendary, nevertheless, very correct history. That legend is\nuniversal. And if the Western *savant *pleases to see in\nit only a myth, it does not make the slightest difference. The\nMexicans had, and still have, the tradition of the fourfold destruction\nof the world by fire and water, just as the Egyptians had, and\nthe Hindus have, to this day.\n\nTrying to account for the community of legends in the remote antiquity\n-- held by Chinese, Chaldean, Egyptians, Indians and Greeks --\nand for the absence of any certain vestige of civilization more\nancient than 5,000 years, the author of \"*Mythical Monsters,*\"*\n*remarks, that \"we must not be surprised if we do not\nimmediately discover the vestiges of the people of ten, fifteen,\nor twenty thousand years ago. With an ephemeral architecture (as\nin China), the sites of vast cities may have become entirely lost\nto recollection in a few thousands of years from natural decay\n. . . and how much more . . . if . . . minor cataclysms have intervened,\nsuch as local inundations, earthquakes, deposition of volcanic\nashes, the spread of sandy deserts, destruction of life by\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* See preceding foot-note.\n\n*** See Manu I., *32, 33. Vaiswanara is, in another sense,\nthe living magnetic fire that pervades the manifested solar system.\nIt is the most objective (to us the reverse) and ever present\naspect of the ONE LIFE, for it is the Vital Principle. (*See\nTheosophist,* *July, *1883, *p*. 249). It is\nalso a name of *Agni.*\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 312 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\ndeadly pestilence, by miasma, or by the outpour of sulphurous\nfumes.\" (\"*Mythical Monsters,*\"* *by\nCh. Gould, p. 134.)\n\nAnd how many of such cataclysms have changed the whole surface\nof the earth may be inferred from this *Stanza:*\n\n\"*During the first seven *crores *of the Kalpa\n*(70,000,000 years) *the* *Earth and its two Kingdoms\n*(mineral and vegetable), *one already having* *achieved\nits seventh circle, the other, hardly nascent, are luminous and*\n*semi-ethereal, cold, lifeless, and translucid. In the eleventh\ncrore* the* *mother* (Earth) *grows opaque, and\nin the *FOURTEENTH** *the throes of* *adolescence\ntake place. These convulsions of nature *(geological changes)\n*last till her twentieth crore of years, uninterruptedly, after\nwhich they* *become periodical, and at long intervals.*\"\n\n*The last change took place nearly twelve crores of years ago\n*(*120,000,000*)*. But the Earth with everything\non her face had become cool,* *hard and settled ages earlier.\n*(*Commentary, xxii.*)\n\nThus, if we are to believe esoteric teaching, there have been\nno more *universal *geological disturbances and changes\nfor the last 120 millions of years, and the Earth was, even before\nthat time, ready to receive her human stock. The appearance of\nthe latter, however, in its full physical development, as already\nstated, took place only about eighteen millions of years ago,\nafter the first great failure of nature to create beings alone,\nwithout the help of the divine \"Fashioners,\" had been\nfollowed by the successive evolution of the first three races\n(*See* *above Stanzas III. et seq*.).* *The\nactual duration of the first two and a-half Races is withheld\nfrom all but the higher Initiates. The History of the Races begins\nat the separation of the Sexes, when the preceding egg-bearing\nandrogynous race perished rapidly, and the subsequent sub-races\nof the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* This -- in the period of *Secondary *creation, so called.\nOf the *Primary, *when Earth is in possession of the three*\nElemental* Kingdoms, we cannot speak for several reasons,\none of which is, that, unless one is a great seer, or naturally\nintuitional, he will be unable to realise that which can never\nbe expressed in any existing terms.\n\n** Hippocrates said that number seven \"By its occult virtues\ntended to the accomplishment of all things, to be the dispenser\nof life and fountain of all its changes.\" The life of man\nhe divided into seven ages (Shakespeare), for \"As the moon\nchanges her phases every seven days, this number influences all\nsublunary beings,\" and even the Earth, as we know. With the\nchild, it is the teeth that appear in the seventh month and he\nsheds them at seven years; at twice seven puberty begins, at three\ntimes seven all our mental and vital powers are developed, at\nfour times seven he is in his full strength, at five times seven\nhis passions are most developed, etc., etc. Thus for the Earth.\nIt is now in its middle age, yet very little wiser for it. The\n*Tetragrammaton,* the four-lettered sacred name of the\nDeity, can be resolved on Earth only by becoming Septenary through\nthe manifest triangle proceeding from the concealed *Tetraktis*.\nTherefore, the number seven has to be adopted on this plane. As\nwritten in the Kabala \"The greater Holy Assembly\" v.\n1161: -- \"For assuredly there is no stability in those six,\nsave (what they derive) from *the seventh. *For *all\nthings depend from the *SEVENTH.\"\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 313 THE ESOTERIC MEANING OF \"FISH.\"\n\nThird Root-Race appeared as an entirely new race *physiologically.\nIt* is this \"destruction\" which is called allegorically\nthe great \"Vaivasvata Manu Deluge,\" when the account\nshows Vaivasvata Manu (or \"Humanity\") remaining alone\non Earth in the Ark of Salvation towed by Vishnu in the shape\nof a monstrous fish, and the Seven Rishis \"with him.\"\nThe allegory is very plain: --\n\nIn the Symbolism of every nation, the \"Deluge\" stands\nfor Chaotic unsettled matter -- Chaos itself: and the Water for\nthe feminine principle -- the \"Great Deep.\" As the Greek\nLexicon of Parkhurst gives it -- \"*Arche* (ark) answers\nto the Hebrew *rasit, *or Wisdom . . . . and (at the same\ntime) to the emblem of the female generative power, the *Arg*\nor *Arca, *in which the germ of nature (and of mankind)\nfloats or broods on the great Abyss of the waters, during the\ninterval which takes place after every mundane (or racial) cycle.\"\nArk is also the mystic name of the divine spirit of *life*\nwhich broods over chaos. Now Vishnu *is *the divine Spirit,\nas an abstract principle, and also as the *Preserver* and\n*Generator, *or *Giver of life *-- the third person\nof the Trimurti (composed of Brahma, the Creator, Siva, the Destroyer,\nand Vishnu, the Preserver). Vishnu is shown in the allegory as\nguiding, under the form of a *fish, *the Ark of Vaivasvata\nManu clean across the waters of the Flood. There is no use in\nexpatiating upon the esoteric meaning of the word *fish.*\n(*See Payne Knight, Inman, Gerald Massey, etc.*) Its theological\nmeanings is phallic, but the metaphysical, *divine*. Jesus\nis called the \"Fish,\" and so were Vishnu and Bacchus:\n[[*Ies*]], the \"Saviour\" of mankind, being but\nthe monogram of the god Bacchus called [[*Ichthus*]], the\nfish.* As to the Seven Rishis in the Ark, they symbolised the\nseven principles, which became complete in man only after he had\nseparated, and become a *human, *and no longer a divine\ncreature. (*See for further* *details, *\"*The\nSeventh Manu.*\")\n\nNor have we many details about the submersion of the continent\ninhabited by the Second Root Race. But the history of the Third,\n\"Lemuria,\" is given, as is that of Atlantis, the others\nbeing only alluded to. Tradition, taking into no account\nthe difference between sidereal and geological phenomena, calls\nboth indifferently \"deluges.\" Yet there is a great difference.\nThe cataclysm which destroyed the huge continent of which Australia\nis the largest relic, was due to a series of subterranean convulsions\nand the breaking asunder of the ocean floors. That which put an\nend to its successor -- the fourth continent -- was brought on\nby successive disturbances in the axial rotation. It began during\nthe earliest tertiary periods, and, continuing for long ages,\ncarried away successively the last vestige of Atlantis, with the\nexception, perhaps, of Ceylon and a small portion of what is now\nAfrica. It changed the face of the globe, and no memory of its\nflourishing continents and isles, of its civilizations and sciences,\nremained in the annals of history, save in the Sacred records\nof the East.\n\nHence, Modern Science denies Atlantis and its existence. It even\ndenies any violent shiftings of the Earth's axis, and would attribute\nthe reason for the change of climates to other causes. But this\nquestion is still an open one. If Dr. Croll will have it that\nall such alterations can be accounted for by the effects of nutation\nand the precession of the equinoxes, there are other men of Science,\nsuch as Sir H. James (*Athenaeum, Aug. *25, 1860), and\nSir John Lubbock (*ibid*), who feel more inclined to accept\nthe idea that they are due to a change in the position of the\naxis of rotation. Against this the majority of the astronomers\nare again arrayed. But then, what have they not denied before\nnow, and what have they not denounced -- only to accept it later\non whenever the hypothesis became undeniable fact?\n\nHow far our figures agree, or rather disagree with modern Science\nwill be seen further in the *Addenda *to this Book, where\nthe geology and anthropology of our modern day are carefully compared\nwith the same in Archaic Science. At any rate, the period assigned\nin the Secret Doctrine for the sinking of Atlantis, does not seem\nto disagree\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* This event, the destruction of the famous island of *Ruta\n*and the smaller one *Daitya, *which occurred 850,000\nyears ago in the later Pliocene times, must not be confounded\nwith the submersion of the main continent of Atlantis during the\nMiocene period. With regard to the pre-human period, all\nthat can be said, at present, is, that even up to the appearance\nof the \"Mindless\" First Race, the Earth was not without\nits inhabitants. More may be said: that which Science -- recognizing\n*only physical man -- *has a right to regard as the *prehuman\n*period, may be conceded to have extended from the First Race\ndown to the first half of the Atlantean race, since it is only\nthen that man became the \"complete *organic *being\nhe is now.\" And this would make *Adamic *man no older\nthan a few million of years.*\n\nThe author of the Qabbalah remarks truly that \"Man to-day,\nas an individual, is only a concatenation of the being-hood of\nprecedent human life,\" or *lives, *rather. \"According\nto the Qabbalah, the soul sparks contained in Adam (Rishoun),\nwent into three principal classes corresponding to his three *sons,\n*viz.: Hesed, Habel, Ge-boor-ah, Qai-yin and *Ra*'*hmin*\nSeth. These three were divided into 70 species, called: the principal\nroots of the human race.\" (p. 422.)\n\n\"Said Rabbi Jehudah: 'How many garments (of the incorporeal\nman) are these which are crowned' (from the day man was 'created')?\nSaid R.
