Blavatsky -- Vol. 2\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 475 NATURE, A STONE-COLD MOTHER.\n\n#### § XVIII.\n\n##### ON THE MYTH OF THE \"FALLEN ANGEL,\"\nIN ITS VARIOUS ASPECTS.\n\n-------\n\n**A**.\n\n**T**HE **E**VIL **S**PIRIT:\n**W**HO, AND **W**HAT?\n\n**O**UR present quarrel is exclusively with theology.\nThe Church enforces belief in a personal god and a personal devil,\nwhile Occultism shows the fallacy of such a belief. And though\nfor the Pantheists and Occultists, as much as for the Pessimists,\nNature is no better than \"a comely mother, but stone cold\"\n-- this is true only so far as regards *external *physical\nnature. They both agree that, to the superficial observer, she\nis no better than an immense slaughter-house wherein butchers\nbecome victims, and victims executioners in their turn. It is\nquite natural that the pessimistically inclined profane, once\nconvinced of Nature's numerous shortcomings and failures, and\nespecially of her autophagous propensities, should imagine this\nto be the best evidence that there is no deity *in abscondito\n*within Nature, nor anything divine in her. Nor is it less\nnatural that the materialist and the physicist should imagine\nthat everything is due to blind force and chance, and to the survival\nof the *strongest, *even more often than of the *fittest.\n*But the Occultists, who regard physical nature as a bundle\nof most varied illusions on the plane of deceptive perceptions;\nwho recognise in every pain and suffering but the necessary pangs\nof incessant procreation: a series of stages toward an ever-growing\nperfectibility, which is visible in the silent influence of never-erring\nKarma, or *abstract *nature -- the Occultists, we say,\nview the great Mother otherwise. Woe to those who live without\nsuffering. Stagnation and death is the future of all that vegetates\nwithout a change. And how can there be any change for the better\nwithout proportionate suffering during the preceding stage? Is\nit not those only who have learnt the deceptive value of earthly\nhopes and the illusive allurements of external nature who are\ndestined to solve the great problems of life, pain, and death?\n\nIf our modern philosophers -- preceded by the medieval scholars\n-- have helped themselves to more than one fundamental idea of\nantiquity, theologians have built their God and his Archangels,\ntheir Satan and his Angels, along with the Logos and his staff,\nentirely out of the *dramatis personae *of the old heathen\nPantheons. They would have been\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 476 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nwelcome to these, had they not cunningly distorted the original\ncharacters, perverted the philosophical meaning, and taking advantage\nof the ignorance of Christendom -- the result of long ages of\nmental sleep, during which humanity was permitted to think only\nby proxy -- tossed every symbol into the most inextricable confusion.\nOne of their most sinful achievements in this direction, was the\ntransformation of the divine *alter ego *into the grotesque\nSatan of their theology.\n\nAs the whole philosophy of the problem of evil hangs upon the\ncorrect comprehension of the constitution of the *inner*\nbeing of nature and man, of the divine within the animal, and\nhence also the correctness of the whole system as given in these\npages, with regard to the crown piece of evolution -- **M**AN\n-- we cannot take sufficient precautions against theological subterfuges.\nWhen the good St. Augustine and the fiery Tertullian called the\nDevil \"the monkey of God,\" this could be attributed\nto the ignorance of the age they lived in. It is more difficult\nto excuse our modern writers on the same ground. The translation\nof Mazdean literature has afforded to the Roman Catholic writers\nthe pretext for proving their point in the same direction once\nmore. They have taken advantage of the dual nature of Ahura Mazda\nin the Zend Avesta and the Vendidad, and of his Amshaspends, to\nemphasize still further their wild theories. *Satan is the\nplagiarist and the copyist* *by anticipation *of the\nreligion which came ages later. This was one of the master strokes\nof the Latin Church, its best trump-card after the appearance\nof Spiritualism in Europe. Though only a *succes d'estime,*\nin general, even among those who are not interested in either\nTheosophy or Spiritualism, yet the weapon is often used by the\nChristian (Roman Catholic) Kabalists against the Eastern Occultists.\n\nNow even the Materialists are quite harmless, and may be regarded\nas the friends of Theosophy, when compared to some fanatical \"Christian\"\n(as they call themselves, \"Sectarian\" as we call them)\nKabalists, on the Continent. These read the *Zohar, *not\nto find in it ancient Wisdom, but to discover in its verses, by\nmangling the texts and meaning, Christian dogmas, where none could\never have been meant; and, having fished them out with the collective\nhelp of jesuitical casuistry and learning, the supposed \"Kabalists\"\nproceed to write books and to mislead less far-sighted students\nof the Kabala.*\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Such a *pseudo*-Kabalist was the Marquis de Mirville\nin France, who, having studied the *Zohar *and other old\nremnants of Jewish Wisdom under the \"Chevalier\" Drach,\nan ancient Rabbi Kabalist converted to the Romish Church -- wrote\nwith his help half a dozen volumes full of slander and calumnies\nagainst every prominent Spiritualist and Kabalist. From 1848 up\nto 1860 he persecuted unrelentingly the old Count d'Ourches, one\nof the earliest Eastern Occultists in France, a man the scope\nof whose occult knowledge will never be appreciated correctly\nby his survivors, because he screened his real beliefs and knowledge\nunder the mask of Spiritism.\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 477 THE GENESIS OF THE DEVIL.\n\nMay we not then be permitted to drag the deep rivers of the Past,\nand thus bring to the surface the root idea that led to the transformation\nof the Wisdom-God, who had first been regarded as the creator\nof everything that exists, into an Angel of Evil -- a ridiculous\nhorned biped, half goat and half monkey, with hoofs and a tail?\nWe need not go out of the way to compare the pagan demons of either\nEgypt, India, or Chaldea with the devil of Christianity, for no\nsuch comparison is possible. But we may stop to glance at the\nbiography of the Christian Devil, a piratical reprint from the\nChaldeo-Judaean mythology: --\n\nThe primitive origin of this personification rests upon the Akkadian\nconception of the cosmic powers -- the Heavens and the Earth --\nin eternal feud and struggle with Chaos. Their Silik-Muludag,\n\"the God amongst all the Gods,\" the \"merciful guardian\nof men on Earth,\" was the Son of Hea (or Ea) the great God\nof Wisdom, called by the Babylonians Nebu. With both peoples --\nas in the case of the Hindu gods -- their deities were both beneficent\nand maleficent. As Evil and punishment are the agents of Karma,\nin an absolutely just retributive sense, so Evil was the servant\nof the good (Hibbert Lect. 1887, pp. 101-115). The reading of\nthe Chaldeo-Assyrian tiles has now demonstrated it beyond a shadow\nof doubt. We find the same idea in the Zohar. Satan was a Son,\nand an Angel of God. With all the Semitic nations, the Spirit\nof the Earth was as much the Creator in his own realm as the Spirit\nof the Heavens. They were twin brothers and interchangeable in\ntheir functions, when not two in one. Nothing of that which we\nfind in Genesis is absent from the Chaldeo-Assyrian religious\nbeliefs, even in the little that has hitherto been deciphered.\nThe great \"Face of the Deep\" of Genesis is traced in\nthe *Tohu-bohu,* \"Deep,\" \"Primeval Space,\"\nor Chaos of the Babylonians. Wisdom (the Great Unseen God) --\ncalled in *Genesis *chap. i. the \"Spirit of God\"\n-- lived, for the older Babylonians as for the Akkadians, in the\n*Sea of Space. *Toward the days described by Berosus, this\nsea became the visible waters *on the face of the Earth*\n-- the* *crystalline abode of the great mother, the mother\nof Ea and all the gods, which became, still later, the great Dragon\nTiamat, the Sea Serpent. Its last stage of development was the\ngreat struggle of Bel with the Dragon -- the Devil!\n\nWhence the Christian idea that God cursed the Devil? The God of\nthe Jews, whomsoever he was, forbids cursing Satan. Philo Judaeus\nand Josephus both state that the Law (the Pentateuch and the Talmud)\nundeviatingly forbid one to curse the adversary, as also the gods\nof the gentiles. \"Thou shalt not revile the gods,\" quoth\nthe god of Moses (Exodus xxii. 28), for it is God who \"hath\ndivided (them) unto all nations\" (Deut. iv. 19); and those\nwho speak evil of\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 478 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\n\"Dignities\" (gods) are called \"*filthy*\ndreamers\" by Jude (8). For even Michael the Archangel durst\nnot bring against him (the devil) a railing accusation, but said:\n\"The Lord rebuke thee\" (*ibid *9). Finally the\nsame is repeated in the Talmud.* \"Satan appeared one day\nto a man who used to curse him daily, and said to him: 'Why dost\nthou this?' Consider that *God himself *would not curse\nme, but merely said: 'The Lord rebuke thee, Satan.' \"**\n\nThis bit of Talmudic information shows plainly two things: (*a*)\nthat St. Michael is called \"God\" in the Talmud, and\nsomebody else \"the Lord\"; and (*b*) that Satan\nis *a God, *of whom even the \"Lord\" is in fear.\nAll we read in the Zohar and other Kabalistic works on Satan shows\nplainly that this \"personage\" is simply the personification\nof the abstract evil, which is the weapon of Karmic law and **K**ARMA.\nIt is our human nature and man himself, as it is said that \"Satan\nis always near and inextricably interwoven with man.\" It\nis only a question of that Power being latent or active in us.\n\nIt is a well-known fact -- to learned Symbologists at all events\n-- that in every great religion of antiquity, it is the Logos\nDemiurge (the second logos), or the first emanation from the mind\n(Mahat), who is made to strike, so* *to say, the key-note\nof that which may be called the correlation of individuality and\npersonality in the subsequent scheme of evolution. The Logos it\nis, who is shown in the mystic symbolism of cosmogony, theogony,\nand anthropogony, playing two parts in the drama of Creation and\nBeing, *i.e*., that of the purely human personality and\nthe divine impersonality of the so-called Avatars, or divine incarnations,\nand of the universal Spirit, called Christos by the Gnostics,\nand the Farvarshi (or *Ferouer) *of Ahura Mazda in the\nMazdean philosophy. On the lower rungs of theogony the celestial\nBeings of lower Hierarchies had each a *Farvarshi, *or\na celestial \"Double.\" It is the same, only a still more\nmystic, reassertion of the Kabalistic axiom, *\"Deus est\nDemon inversus\"; *the word \"demon,\" however,\nas in the case of Socrates, and in the spirit of the meaning given\nto it by the whole of antiquity, standing for the guardian Spirit,\nan \"Angel,\" not a devil of Satanic descent, as theology\nwill have it. The Roman Catholic Church shows its usual logic\nand consistency by accepting, as the *ferouer *of Christ,\nSt. Michael, who was \"his Angel Guardian,\" as *proved\n*by St. Thomas,*** while he calls the prototypes of Michael\nand his synonyms, such as Mercury, for example, devils\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n** Vide Isis Unveiled, *Vol. **II**., 487,\n*et seq.*\n\n** Treat. *Kiddusheem, *81. But see the Qabbala by Mr.\nI. Myer, pp. 92, 94, and the Zohar, quoted in his Volume.\n\n*** In the work of Marangone \"Delle grandezze del Archangelo\nSancto Mikaele,\" the author exclaims: \"O Star, the greatest\nof those that follow the Sun who is Christ! . . . [[continued\non following page]]\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 479 GOD AND DEVIL, BOTH METATRONS.\n\nThe Church accepts positively the tenet that Christ has his *Ferouer*\nas any other god or mortal has. Writes de Mirville: \"Here\nwe have the two heroes of the Old Testament, the *Verbum*\n(?),* *or the *second* Jehovah, and his *face\n*('Presence,' as the Protestants translate) forming both but\none, and yet being two, a mystery which seemed to us unsolvable\nbefore we had studied the doctrine of the Mazdean *ferouers,*\nand learnt that the *ferouer *was the spiritual potency,\nat once *image,* *face, *and the *guardian *of\nthe Soul which finally assimilates the *ferouer.\"**\n*(*Memoires a l'Academie, *Vol. v., p. 516.) This is\n*almost *correct.\n\nAmong other absurdities, the Kabalists maintain that the word\n*metatron *being divided into [[*meta*, *thronon*]],\nmeans *near the throne. *It means quite the reverse, as\nmeta means \"beyond\" and not \"near.\" This is\nof great importance in our argument. St. Michael, then, the *quis\nut* *Deus, *is the translator, so to speak, of the\ninvisible world into the visible and the objective.\n\nThey maintain, furthermore, along with the Roman Catholic Church,\nthat in the Biblical and Christian theology there does not exist\na \"higher celestial personality, after the Trinity, than\nthat of the Archangel or the Seraphim, *Michael*.\"\nAccording to them, the conqueror of the Dragon is \"the archisatrap\nof the sacred militia, the guardian of the planets, the King of\nthe Stars, the slayer of Satan and the most powerful Rector.\"\nIn the mystic astronomy of these gentlemen, he is \"the conqueror\nof Ahriman, who having upset the sidereal throne of the usurper,\nbathes in his stead in the solar fires\"; and, defender of\nthe Christ-Sun, he approaches so near his Master, \"that he\nseems to become one with him . . . . Owing to this fusion with\nthe **W**ORD (*Verbum*)* *the Protestants,\nand among them Calvin, ended by losing sight entirely of the duality,\nand saw no Michael but only his Master,\" writes the Abbe\nCaron. The Roman Catholics, and especially their Kabalists, know\nbetter; and it is they who explain to the world this duality,\nwhich affords to them the means of glorifying the chosen ones\nof the Church, and of rejecting and anathematizing all those Gods\nwho may be in the way of their dogmas.\n\nThus the same titles and the same names are given in turn to God\nand the Archangel. Both are called *Metatron, *\"both\nhave the name of Jehovah applied to them when they speak *one\nin the other\" (sic) *as, according to the *Zohar,\n*the term signifies equally \"the Master and the Ambassador.\"\nBoth are the *Angel of the Face, *because, as we are informed,\nif, on the one hand, the \"Word\" is called \"the\nface (or the Presence) and the image of the substance of God,\"\non the other, \"when\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Footnote continued from previous page]] O living image of Divinity!\nO great thaumaturgist of the old Testament! O invisible Vicar\nof Christ within his Church! . . .\" etc., etc. The work is\nin great honour in the Latin Church.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 480 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nspeaking of the *Saviour *to the Israelites, Isaiah (?)\ntells them that \"the angel of his presence saved them in\ntheir affliction\" -- \"so he was their Saviour.\"*\nElsewhere he (Michael) is called very plainly \"the Prince\nof the *Faces *of the Lord, the *glory *of the Lord.\"\nBoth (Jehovah and Michael) are \"the *guides *of Israel**\n. . . chiefs of the *armies *of the Lord, *Supreme Judges\n*of the souls and even Seraphs.\"***\n\nThe whole of the above is given on the authority of various works\nby Roman Catholics, and must, therefore, be orthodox. Some expressions\nare translated to show what subtle theologians and casuists mean\nby the term Ferouer,**** a word borrowed by some French writers\nfrom the *Zend Avesta, *as said, and utilized in Roman\nCatholicism for a purpose Zoroaster was very far from anticipating.\nIn Fargard **XIX**. of the *Vendidad *it is\nsaid (verse 14), \"Invoke, O Zarathustra! my Farvarshi, who\nam Ahura Mazda, the greatest, the best, the fairest of all beings,\nthe most solid, the most intelligent, . . . . and whose soul is\nthe Holy Word\" (Mathra Spenta). The French Orientalists translate\n*Farvarshi* by* \"Ferouer.\"*\n\nNow what is a Ferouer, or Farvarshi? In some Mazdean works (*e.g*.,\nOrmazd Ahriman, §§ 112, 113), it is plainly implied\nthat Farvarshi is the *inner*, immortal man (or that *Ego\n*which reincarnates); that it existed before its physical\nbody and survives all such it happens to be clothed in. \"Not\nonly man was endowed with the Farvarshi, *but gods* *too,\n*and the sky, fire, waters, and plants.\" (Introduction\nto the *Vendidad, *by J. Darmesteter). This shows as plainly\nas can be shown that the* ferouer *is the \"spiritual\ncounterpart\" of whether god, animal, plant, or even element,\n*i.e*., the refined and the *purer* part of the grosser\ncreation, the soul of the body, whatever the body may happen to\nbe. Therefore does Ahura Mazda recommend Zarathustra to invoke\nhis *Farvarshi *and not himself (Ahura-Mazda); that is\nto say, the impersonal and *true *Essence of Deity, *one\nwith Zoroaster's own Atman *(or Christos), not the *false\n*and personal appearance. This is quite clear.\n\nNow it is on this divine and ethereal prototype that the Roman\nCatholics seized so as to build up the supposed difference between\ntheir god and angels, and the deity and its aspects, or the gods\nof the old religions. Thus, while calling Mercury, Venus, Jupiter\n(whether as gods or planets) **D**EVILS, they yet\nmake of the same Mercury the *ferouer* of their Christ.\nThis fact is undeniable. Vossius (*De Idol., ***II**.,\n373)\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Isaiah, lxiii. 8-9.\n\n** Metator and [[*hegemon*]]*.*\n\n*** \"La Face et le Representant du Verbe,\" p. 18, de\nMirville.\n\n**** That which is called in the *Vendidad* \"Farvarshi,\"\nthe immortal part of an individual, that which outlives *man*\n-- the Higher Ego, say the Occultists, or the divine Double.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 481 FRAUDULENT TRANSLATION OF THE BIBLE.\n\nproves that Michael is the Mercury of the *pagans, *and\nMaury and other French writers corroborate him, and add that \"according\nto great theologians *Mercury and the Sun are one,\" *(?)\nand no wonder, they think, since \"Mercury being so near the\nWisdom of the *Verbum *(the Sun), must be absorbed by and\nconfounded with him.\"\n\nThis \"pagan\" view was accepted from the first century\nof our era, as shown in the ORIGINAL *Acts of the Apostles\n*(the English translation being worthless). So much is Michael\nthe Mercury of the Greeks and other nations, that when the inhabitants\nof Lystra mistook Paul and Barnabas for Mercury and Jupiter --\n\"the gods have come down to us in the likeness of men,\"\n-- verse 12 (xiv.) adds: \"And they called Barnabas Zeus,\nand Paul, Hermes (or Mercury), because he was the *leader of\nthe *WORD* (Verbum),*\"* *and not \"the\nchief speaker,\" as erroneously translated in the authorised,\nand repeated even in the revised, English Bible. Michael is the\nangel in the Vision, the Son of God, \"who was like unto a\nSon of Man.\" It is the Hermes-Christos of the Gnostics, the\nAnubis-Syrius of the Egyptians, the Counsellor of Osiris in *Amenti,\n*the Michael *leontoid *[[*ophiomorphos*]] of\nthe Ophites, who wears on certain Gnostic jewels a lion *head,\n*like his father Ildabaoth. (See King's* Gnostics*.)\n\nNow to all this the Roman Catholic Church consents tacitly, many\nof her writers avowing it publicly. And, unable to deny the flagrant\n\"borrowing\" of their Church, who \"spoilt\"\nthe symbols of her seniors, as the Jews had \"spoilt\"\nthe Egyptians of their jewels of silver and gold, they explain\nthe fact quite coolly and as seriously. Thus the writers who were\nhitherto *timid* enough to see, in this repetition by Christian\ndogmas of old Pagan ideas, \"a *legendary plagiarism *perpetrated\nby man,\" are gravely assured that, far from such a simple\nsolution of the almost perfect resemblance, it has to be attributed\nto quite another cause: \"to a *prehistorical *plagiarism,\nof a *superhuman *origin.\"\n\nIf the reader would know how, he must kindly turn to the same\nfifth volume of de Mirville's work. Please note that this author\nwas the *official and recognised defender *of the Roman\nChurch, and was helped by the learning of all the Jesuits. On\npage 518 we read: --\n\n\"We have pointed out several demi-gods, and also very historical\nheroes of the pagans, who were predestined from the moment of\ntheir birth, *to ape while dishonouring it, *the nativity\nof the hero, *who was quite* *God, *before whom\nthe whole earth had to bow; we traced them being born as *he\n*was, from an immaculate mother; we saw them strangling serpents\nin their cradles, fighting against demons, performing miracles,\ndying as martyrs, descending to the nether world and rising again\nfrom the dead. And we have bitterly deplored that timid and shy\nChristians should feel compelled to explain all such identities\non the ground of\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 482 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\ncoincidence of myth and symbol. They forgot apparently these words\nof the Saviour: '**A**LL THAT CAME BEFORE ME ARE\nTHIEVES AND ROBBERS,' a word which explains all without any absurd\nnegation and which I commented in these words 'The Evangel is\na sublime drama, *parodied* *and played before its appointed\ntime by ruffians.*' \"\n\nThe \"ruffians\" (*les droles*)*, *are of\ncourse *demons *whose manager is Satan. Now this is the\neasiest and the most sublime and simple way of getting out of\nthe difficulty! The Rev. Dr. Lundy, a Protestant de Mirville,\nfollowed the happy suggestion in his \"Monumental Christianity,\"\nand so did Dr. Sepp of Munich in his works written to prove the\ndivinity of Jesus and the Satanic origin of all other Saviours.\nSo much greater the pity that a systematic and collective plagiarism,\nwhich went on for several centuries on the most gigantic scale,\nshould be explained by another plagiarism, this time in the fourth\nGospel. For the sentence quoted from it, \"All that ever came\nbefore me, etc.,\" is a *verbatim *repetition of words\nwritten in the \"Book of Enoch\" lxxxix. In the *Introduction\n*to Archbishop Lawrence's translation of it from an Ethiopic\n**MS**. in the Bodleian Library, the editor, author\nof the \"Evolution of Christianity,\" remarks: --\n\n\"In revising the proof-sheets of the Book of Enoch . . .\n. . the parable of the sheep, rescued by the good Shepherd from\nhireling guardians and ferocious wolves, *is obviously borrowed\nby the fourth* *Evangelist *from Enoch, lxxxix., in\nwhich the author depicts the shepherds as killing . . . the sheep\nbefore the advent of their Lord, and thus discloses the true meaning\nof that hitherto mysterious passage in the Johannine parable --\n'All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers' -- language\nin which we now detect an obvious reference to the allegorical\nshepherds of Enoch.\"\n\nIt is too late in the day to claim that it is Enoch who borrowed\nfrom the New Testament, instead of *vice versa. *Jude (14-15)\nquotes *verbatim* from Enoch a long passage about the coming\nof the Lord with his 10,000 saints, and naming specifically the\nprophet, *acknowledges* the source. This \"parallelism\nbetween prophet and apostle, have placed beyond controversy that,\n*in the eyes of the author of an Epistle accepted* *as\ndivine revelation, *the Book of Enoch *was the inspired\nproduction of an* *antediluvian patriarch . *. . \"\nand further \" . . . the cumulative coincidence of language\nand ideas in Enoch and the authors of **N.T**. Scripture,\n. . . clearly indicates that the work of the Semitic Milton was\nthe inexhaustible source from which Evangelists and Apostles,\nor the men who wrote in their names, borrowed their conceptions\nof the resurrection, judgment, immortality, perdition, and of\nthe universal reign of righteousness under the eternal dominion\nof the Son of Man. This *Evangelical* *plagiarism *culminates\nin the Revelation of John, which adapts the visions\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 483 VEDAS, ONCE UNIVERSAL.\n\nof Enoch to Christianity, with modifications in which we miss\nthe sublime simplicity of the great Master of apocalyptic *prediction**,*\nwho prophesied in the name of the antediluvian Patriarch.\"\n(**I**NT. xxxv.)\n\n\"Antediluvian,\" truly; but if the phraseology of the\ntext dates hardly a few centuries or even millenniums before the\nhistorical era, then it is no more the original *prediction\n*of the events to come, but, in its turn, a copy of some scripture\nof a prehistoric religion. . . . . \"In the Krita age, Vishnu,\nin the form of Kapila and other (inspired sages) . . . imparts\nto the world true wisdom as Enoch did. In the Treta age he restrains\nthe wicked, in the form of a universal monarch (the Chakravartin\nor the 'Everlasting King' of Enoch*) and protects the three worlds\n(or races). In the Dwapara age, in the person of Veda-Vyasa, he\ndivides the one Veda into four, and distributes it into hundreds\n(*Sata*) of branches.\" Truly so; the *Veda *of\nthe earliest Aryans, before it was written, went forth into every\nnation of the Atlanto-Lemurians, and sowed the first seeds of\nall the now existing old religions. The off-shoots of the never\ndying tree of wisdom have scattered their dead leaves even on\nJudaeo-Christianity. And at the end of the Kali, our present age,\nVishnu, or the \"Everlasting King\" will appear as Kalki,\nand re-establish righteousness upon earth. The minds of those\nwho live at that time shall be awakened, and become as pellucid\nas crystal. \"The men who are thus changed by virtue of that\npeculiar time (the sixth race) *shall be as the seeds *of\nother human beings, and shall give birth to a race who shall follow\nthe laws of the Krita age of purity\"; *i.e*., it shall\nbe the seventh race, the race of \"Buddhas,\" the \"Sons\nof God,\" born of *immaculate *parents.\n\n-------\n\n**B**.\n\n**T**HE **G**ODS OF **L**IGHT\nPROCEED FROM THE **G**ODS OF **D**ARKNESS.\n\nThus it is pretty well established that Christ, the Logos, or\nthe God in Space and the Saviour on Earth, is but one of the echoes\nof the same antediluvian and sorely misunderstood Wisdom. The\nhistory begins by the descent on Earth of the \"Gods\"\nwho incarnate in mankind, and this is the **F**ALL.\nWhether Brahma hurled down on Earth in the allegory by Bhagavant,\nor Jupiter by Kronos, all are the symbols of the human races.\nOnce landed on, and having touched this planet of dense matter,\nno snow-white wings of the highest angel can remain immaculate,\nor the *Avatar *(or incarnation) be perfect, as every such\nAvatar is\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Saith Uriel (chap. xxvi. v. 3), in the \"Book of Enoch\"\n\"all those who have received mercy shall for ever bless God\n*the everlasting King,*\"* *who will reign over\nthem.\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 484 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nthe fall of a God into generation. Nowhere is the metaphysical\ntruth more clear, when explained esoterically, or more hidden\nfrom the average comprehension of those who instead of appreciating\nthe sublimity of the idea can only degrade, than in the *Upanishads,\n*the esoteric glossaries of the Vedas. The Rig-Veda, as Guignault\ncharacterized it, \"is the most sublime conception of the\ngreat highways of Humanity.\" The Vedas are, and will remain\nfor ever, in the esotericism of the Vedanta and the Upanishads,\n\"the mirror of the eternal Wisdom.\"\n\nFor over sixteen centuries the new masks, forced on the faces\nof the old gods, have screened them from public curiosity, but\nthey have finally proved a misfit. Yet the metaphorical **F**ALL,\nand as metaphorical atonement and crucifixion, led Western Humanity\nthrough roads knee-deep in blood. Worse than all, they led it\nto believe in the dogma of the evil spirit distinct from the spirit\nof all good, whereas the former lives in all matter and pre-eminently\nin man. Finally it created the God-slandering dogma of Hell and\neternal perdition; it spread a thick film between the higher intuitions\nof man and divine verities; and, most pernicious result of all,\nit made people remain ignorant of the fact that there were no\nfiends, no dark demons in the Universe before man's own appearance\non this, and probably on other earths. Henceforth the people were\nled to accept, as the problematical consolation for this world's\nsorrows, the thought of original sin.\n\nThe philosophy of that law in Nature, which implants in man as\nwell as in every beast a passionate, inherent, and instinctive\ndesire for freedom and self-guidance, pertains to psychology and\ncannot be touched on now. To show the feeling in higher Intelligences,\nto analyse and give a natural reason for it, would necessitate,\nmoreover, an endless philosophical explanation for which there\nis no room here. Perhaps, the best synthesis of this feeling is\nfound in three lines of Milton's* Paradise Lost. *Says\nthe \"Fallen One\": --\n\n\"Here we may reign secure; and in my choice,\n\nTo reign is worth ambition, though in hell!\n\nBetter to reign in hell than serve in heaven . . . .\"\n\nBetter be man, the crown of terrestrial production and king over\nits* opus operatum, *than be lost among the will-less spiritual\nHosts in Heaven.\n\nWe have said elsewhere that the dogma of the first *Fall *rested\non a few verses in *Revelation; *these verses being now\nshown a plagiarism from Enoch by some scholars. These grew into\nendless theories and speculations, which gradually acquired the\nimportance of dogma and inspired tradition. Every one wanted to\nexplain the verse about the seven-headed dragon with his ten horns\nand seven crowns, whose tail\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 485 THE SONS OF ETERNITY.\n\n\"drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast\nthem to the earth,\" and whose place, with that of his angels,\n\"was found no more in heaven.\" What the seven heads\nof the Dragon (cycle) mean, and its *five *wicked kings also,\nmay be learned in the *Addenda *which close Part **III**.\nof this Volume.\n\nFrom Newton to Bossuet speculations were incessantly evolved in\nChristian brains with regard to these obscure verses. . . . .\n\"The star that falls, is the heresiarch Theodosius\"\n. . . . explains Bossuet. \"The clouds of smoke, are the heresies\nof the Montanists. . . . . The third part of the stars, are the\nmartyrs, and especially the doctors of divinity. . . . .\"\n\nBossuet ought to have known, however, that the events described\nin *Revelation *were not original, and may, as shown, be\nfound in other and pagan traditions. There were no scholastics\nnor Montanists during Vedic times, nor yet far later in China.\nBut Christian *theology *had to be *protected and saved.*\n\nThis was only natural. But why should truth be sacrificed in order\nto protect from destruction the lucubrations of Christian theologians?\n\nThe* princeps aeris hujus, *the \"prince of the air\"\nof St. Paul, is not the devil, but the effects of the astral light,\nas Eliphas Levi correctly explains. The Devil is not \"the\nGod *of this period,\" *as he says, for it is the deity\nof every age and period, since man appeared on earth, and matter,\nin its countless forms and states, had to fight for its evanescent\nexistence against other disintegrating Forces.\n\nThe \"Dragon\" is simply the symbol of the cycle and of\nthe \"Sons of Manvantaric Eternity,\" who had descended\non earth during a certain epoch of its formative period. The \"clouds\nof smoke\" are a geological phenomenon. The \"third part\nof the stars of heaven\" cast down to the earth -- refers\nto the divine Monads, (the Spirits of the Stars in Astrology)\nthat circumambulate our globe; *i.e.*, the* human *Egos\ndestined to perform the whole cycle of incarnations. This sentence,\n*qui* *circumambulat terram*, however, is again\nreferred to the **D**EVIL in theology, the mythical\nfather of Evil being said to \"fall like lightning.\"\nUnfortunately for this interpretation, the \"Son of Man,\"\nor Christ, is expected, on the personal testimony of Jesus, to\ndescend on earth likewise, \"As the lightning cometh out of\nthe East,\"* just in the same shape and under the same symbol\nas Satan, who is seen \"as lightning to fall from heaven.\"**\nAll these metaphors and figures of speech, pre-eminently Oriental\nin their character, must have their origin searched for in the\nEast. In all the ancient cosmogonies *light *comes from *darkness.\n*In Egypt, as elsewhere, *darkness *was \"the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Matthew xxiv. 27.\n\n** Luke x. 18.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 486 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nprinciple of all things.\" Hence Pymander, the \"Thought\n*divine*,\" issues as *light *from DARKNESS.\n*Behemoth* *is the principle of Darkness, or *Satan,\n*in Roman Catholic Theology, and yet Job says of him that\n\"Behemoth is the chief (principle) of the ways of God\"\n(xl. 19) -- *\"Principium viarum Domini Behemoth!\"**\n*\n\nConsistency does not seem to be a favourite virtue in any portion\nof divine Revelation, so-called -- not as interpreted by theologians,\nat any rate.\n\nThe Egyptians and the Chaldeans referred the birth of their *divine*\n*Dynasties *to that period when creative Earth was in her\nlast final throes, in giving birth to her prehistoric mountain\nranges, which have since disappeared, her seas and her continents.\nHer face was covered with \"deep Darkness and in that (Secondary)\nChaos was the principle of all things\" that developed on\nthe globe later on. And our geologists have ascertained that there\nwas such a terrestrial conflagration in the early geological periods,\nseveral hundred millions of years ago.** As to the tradition itself,\nevery country and nation had it, each under its respective national\nform.\n\nIt is not alone Egypt, Greece, Scandinavia or Mexico, that had\ntheir Typhon, Python, Loki and its \"falling\" Demon,\nbut China, also. The Celestials have a whole literature upon the\nsubject. In *King, *it is said that in consequence of a\nrebellion against *Ti* of a proud Spirit who said he was\n*Ti* himself, seven choirs of celestial spirits were exiled\nupon earth, which *\"brought a change in all nature, *heaven\nitself *bending* down and uniting with earth.\"\n\nAnd in the \"Y-King,\" one reads: \"The flying Dragon,\nsuperb and rebellious, suffers now, and his pride is punished;\nhe thought he would reign in heaven, he reigns only on the earth.\"\n\nAgain, the *Tchoon-Tsieoo *says allegorically: \"one\nnight the stars ceased shining in darkness, and deserted it, falling\ndown like rain upon the earth, *where they are now hidden.\"\n*These stars are the Monads.\n\nChinese cosmogonies have their \"Lord of the Flame\" and\ntheir \"Celestial Virgin,\" with little \"Spirits\nto help and minister to her; and big Spirits to fight those who\nare the enemies of other gods.\" But all this does not prove\nthat the said allegories are *presentments *or *prophetic\n*writings which all refer to Christian theology.\n\nThe best proof one can offer to Christian Theologians that the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* The Protestant Bible defines Behemoth *innocently* --\n\"The *elephant *as some think\" (See marginal\nnote in Job xl. 19) in the authorised versions.\n\n** Astronomy, however, knows nothing of stars that have *disappeared\n*unless from visibility, never from existence, since the Science\nof Astronomy became known. Temporary stars are only *variable*\nstars, and it is believed even that the *new* stars of\nKepler and Tycho Brahe may still be seen.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 487 THE SHADOWS OF THE SHADOWS.\n\nesoteric meaning in the Bible -- in both Testaments -- was the\nassertion of the same idea as in our Archaic teachings -- to wit,\nthat the \"Fall of the Angels\" referred simply to the\nincarnation of angels \"who had broken through the Seven Circles\"\n-- is found in the *Zohar. *Now the Kabala of Simeon Ben\nIochai is the soul and essence of its allegory, as the later *Christian*\nKabala* *is the \"dark cloaked\" Mosaic Pentateuch.\nAnd it says (in the Agrippa **MSS**.):\n\n\"The wisdom of the Kabala rests in the science of the equilibrium\nand Harmony.\"\n\n\"Forces that manifest without having been first equilibrized\nperish in space\" (\"equilibrized\" meaning differentiated).\n\n\"Thus perished the first Kings (the Divine Dynasties) of\nthe ancient world, the *self-produced *Princes of giants.\nThey fell like rootless trees, and were seen no more: for *they\nwere the Shadow of the Shadow*\"*; *to wit, the\n*chhaya *of the Shadowy Pitris. (*Vide* about the\n\"Kings of Edom.\")\n\n\"But those that came after them, who shooting down like falling\nstars were enshrined in the shadows -- prevailed and to this day\":\nDhyanis, who by incarnating in those \"empty shadows,\"\ninaugurated the era of mankind.\n\nEvery sentence in the ancient cosmogonies, unfolds to him who\ncan read between the lines the identity of the ideas, though under\ndifferent garbs.\n\nThe first lesson taught in Esoteric philosophy is, that the incognizable\nCause does not put forth evolution, whether consciously or unconsciously,\nbut only exhibits periodically *different aspects of itself*\nto the perception of *finite *Minds. Now the collective\nMind -- the Universal -- composed of various and numberless Hosts\nof Creative Powers, however infinite in manifested Time, is still\nfinite when contrasted with the unborn and undecaying Space in\nits supreme essential aspect. That which is finite cannot be perfect.\nTherefore there are inferior Beings among those Hosts, but there\nnever were any *devils *or \"disobedient Angels,\"\nfor the simple reason that they are all governed by Law. The*\nAsuras *who incarnated (call them by any other name), followed\nin this a law as implacable as any other. They had manifested\nprior to the Pitris, and as time (in Space) proceeds in Cycles,\ntheir turn had come -- hence the numerous allegories *(Vide\n\"Demon est Deus inversus,\"* Part **II**.,\nVol. I.). The name of *Asura *was first given by the Brahmans\nindiscriminately to those who opposed their mummeries and sacrifices,\nas the great *Asura *called \"Asurendra\" did.\nIt is to those ages, probably, that the origin of the idea of\nthe demon, as opposer and adversary, has to be traced.\n\nThe Hebrew Elohim, called in the translations \"God,\"\nand who create \"light,\" are identical with the Aryan\nAsuras. They are also\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 488 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nreferred to as the \"Sons of Darkness\" as a philosophical\nand logical contrast to light immutable and eternal. The earliest\nZoroastrians did not believe in Evil or Darkness being *co-eternal\n*with Good or Light, and they give the same interpretation.\nAhriman is the manifested *shadow* of **A**HURA-MAZDA\n*(Asura-mazda), *himself issued from *Zeruana Akerne*\n\"boundless (circle of) Time\" or the Unknown Cause. \"Its\nglory,\" they say of the latter, \"is too exalted, its\nlight too resplendent for either human intellect or mortal eye\nto grasp and see.\" Its primal emanation *is eternal light,\nwhich, from having been previously concealed in ***D**ARKNESS*\nwas called to manifest itself and thus was formed Ormazd, the*\n*\"King of Life.\" *He is the \"first-born\"\nin BOUNDLESS TIME, but, like his own antitype (pre-existing Spiritual\nidea), *has lived within darkness from* *all eternity.\n*The six Amshaspends (seven with himself, chief of all), the\n*primitive Spiritual Angels and Men *are *collectively\nhis Logos. *The Zoroastrian Amshaspends create the world in\nsix days or periods also, and rest on the Seventh; whereas that\n*Seventh *is the *first *period or \"day,\"\nin esoteric philosophy, (*Primary *creation in the Aryan\ncosmogony). It is that intermediate AEon which is the *Prologue\n*to creation, and which stands on the borderland between the\nuncreated eternal Causation and the produced finite effects; a\nstate of *nascent *activity and energy as the first aspect\nof the eternal immutable Quiescence. In *Genesis, *on which\nno metaphysical energy has been spent, but only an extraordinary\nacuteness and ingenuity to veil the esoteric Truth, \"Creation\"\nbegins at the third stage of manifestation. \"God\" or\nthe *Elohim *are the \"Seven Regents\" of Pymander.\nThey are identical with all the other Creators.\n\nBut even in Genesis that *period *is hinted at by the abruptness\nof the picture, and the *\"darkness\" *that was\non the face of the deep. The *Alahim *are shown to \"create\"\n-- that is to say, to build or to produce the two or \"double\nheaven\" (*not* Heaven and Earth); which means, in\nso many words, that they separated the upper manifested (angelic)\nheaven, or plane of consciousness, from the lower or terrestrial\nplane; the (to us) eternal and immutable *AEons* from those\nperiods that are in space, time and duration; Heaven from Earth,\nthe unknown from the KNOWN -- to the profane. Such is the meaning\nof the sentence in Pymander, which says that: \"**T**HOUGHT,\nthe divine, which is **L**IGHT and **L**IFE\n(Zeruana Akerne) produced through its **W**ORD, or\nfirst aspect,\" the *other, operating ***T**HOUGHT,\nwhich being the god of Spirit and Fire, constructed *seven\nRegents *enclosing within their circle the world of Senses,\nnamed \"fatal destiny.\" The latter refers to Karma; the\n\"seven circles\" are the seven planets and planes, as\nalso the seven invisible Spirits, in the angelic spheres, whose\nvisible symbols are the seven planets,* the\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* Another proof, if any were needed, that the ancient Initiates\nknew of more than seven planets is to be found in the Vishnu Purana,\nBook **II**., ch. xii., where, describing [[continued\non following page]]\n\n[[Vol. 2, Page]] 489 THE ONE PASSIVE DEITY.\n\nseven *Rishis *of the great Bear and other glyphs. As said\nof the Adityas by Roth: \"they are neither sun, nor moon,\nnor stars, nor dawn, but the eternal sustainers of this luminous\nlife which exists as it were behind all these phenomena.\"\n\nIt is they -- the \"Seven Hosts\" -- who, having \"considered\nin their Father (*divine* Thought) the plan of the operator,\"\nas says Pyrnander, *desired *to operate (or build the world\nwith its creatures) likewise; for, having been born *\"within\n*the sphere of operation\" -- the manifesting Universe\n-- such is the Manvantaric **L**AW. And now comes\nthe second portion of the passage, or rather of two passages merged\ninto one to conceal the full meaning. Those who were born within\nthe sphere of operation were \"the brothers who loved him\nwell.\" The latter -- the \"him\" -- were the primordial\nangels: the Asuras, the Ahriman, the Elohim -- or \"Sons of\nGod,\" of whom *Satan *was one -- all those spiritual\nbeings who were called the \"Angels of Darkness,\" because\nthat darkness is *absolute *light, a fact now neglected\nif not entirely forgotten in theology. Nevertheless, the spirituality\nof those much abused \"Sons of Light\" which is Darkness,\nmust be evidently as great in comparison with that of the Angels\nnext in order, as the ethereality of the latter would be, when\ncontrasted with the density of the human body. The former are\nthe \"First-born\"; therefore so near to the confines\nof pure quiescent Spirit as to be merely the \"PRIVATIONS\"\n-- in the Aristotelian sense -- the *ferouers *or the ideal\ntypes of those who followed. They could not create material, *corporeal*\n*things; *and, therefore, were said in process of time\nto *have refused to* create, as *commanded by *\"*God*\"\n-- otherwise, TO HAVE REBELLED.\n\nPerchance, this is justified on that principle of the *Scientific\n*theory which teaches us about light and sound and the effect\nof two waves of equal length meeting. \"If the two sounds\nbe of the same intensity, their coincidence produces a sound four\ntimes the intensity of either, while their interference produces\n*absolute silence.\"** *\n\nExplaining some of the \"heresies\" of his day, Justin\nMartyr shows the identity of all the world religions at their\nstarting points. The first *beginning *opens invariably\nwith the *unknown *and PASSIVE deity, from which emanates\na certain active power or virtue, the Mystery that is sometimes\ncalled **W**ISDOM, sometimes the **S**ON,\nvery often God, Angel, Lord, and** L**OGOS.* The\nlatter is sometimes applied to the very first emanation, but in\nseveral systems it proceeds from the first androgyne or double\nray produced at the beginning by the unseen. Philo depicts this\nwisdom as male and female. But though its first manifestation\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n[[Continued from preceding page]] the chariots attached to Dhruva\n(the pole star), Parasara speaks of \"the chariots of the\nNINE planets,\" which are attached by aerial cords.\n\n* Justin: \"Cum. Trypho,\" p. 284.\n\n####### [[Vol. 2, Page]] 490 THE SECRET DOCTRINE.\n\nhad a beginning, for it proceeded from *Oulom* *(Aion,\ntime), the highest of the AEons when emitted from the Father,\nit had remained with him *before all creations, *for it\nis part of him.** Therefore, Philo Judaeus calls Adam Kadmon *\"mind\"\n*(the Ennoia of *Bythos *in the Gnostic system). \"The\nmind, let it be named Adam.***\n\nAs the old Magian books explain it, the whole *event* becomes\nclear. A thing can only exist through its opposite -- Hegel teaches\nus, and only a little philosophy and spirituality are needed to\ncomprehend the origin of the later dogma, which is so truly satanic\nand infernal in its cold and cruel wickedness. The Magians accounted\nfor the origin of evil in their exoteric teachings in this way.\n\"Light can produce nothing but light, and can never be the\norigin of evil\"; how then was the evil produced, since there\nwas nothing co-equal or like the Light in its production? Light,\nsay they, produced several Beings, all of them spiritual, luminous,\nand powerful. But a **G**REAT ONE (the \"Great\nAsura,\" Ahriman, Lucifer, etc., etc.) had an *evil thought,\n*contrary to the Light. He doubted, and by that doubt he became\ndark.\n\nThis is a little nearer to the truth, but still wide of the mark.\nThere was no \"EVIL thought\" that originated the opposing\nPower, but simply THOUGHT *per se; *something which, being\ncogitative, and containing design and purpose, is therefore finite,\nand must thus find itself naturally in opposition to pure quiescence,\nthe as natural state of absolute Spirituality and Perfection.\nIt was simply the law of Evolution that asserted itself; the progress\nof mental unfolding, differentiated from spirit, involved and\nentangled already with matter, into which it is irresistibly drawn.\nIdeas, in their very nature and essence, as conceptions bearing\nrelation to objects, whether true or imaginary, are opposed to\nabsolute THOUGHT, that unknowable ALL of whose mysterious operations\nMr. Spencer predicates that nothing can be said, but that \"it\nhas no kinship of nature with Evolution\" (*Principles\nof Psychology,****** *474) -- which it certainly has\nnot.\n\nThe *Zohar *gives it very suggestively. When the \"Holy\nOne\" (the Logos) desired to create man, he called the *highest\n*host of Angels and said to them what he wanted, but they\n*doubted *the wisdom of this desire and answered: \"Man\nwill not continue one night in his glory\" -- for\n\n####### [[Footnote(s)]] -------------------------------------------------\n\n* A division indicative of time.\n\n** Sanchoniathon calls time the oldest AEon, *Protogonos,*\nthe* \"first-born.\"** *\n\n*** Philo Judaeus: \"Cain and his Birth,\" p. xvii.\n\n**** It is suggestive of that spirit of paradoxical negation so\nconspicuous in our day, that while the evolution hypothesis has\nwon its rights of citizenship in science as taught by Darwin and\nHaeckel, yet both the eternity of the Universe and the pre-existence\nof a *universal consciousness, *are rejected by the modern\npsychologists. \"Should the Idealist be right, the doctrine\nof evolution is a dream,\" says Mr. Herbert Spencer. This is quite plain. No mention is made in *Genesis\n*of these \"Sons of God\" (chap. vi.) having been\n*punished *for it. The only reference to it in the Bible\nis in Jude (6). \"And the angels which kept not their first\nestate but left their habitation, he hath reserved in *everlasting\nchains under darkness* *unto the judgment of the great\nday.\" *And this means simply that the \"Angels,\"\ndoomed to incarnation, *are in the chains *of flesh and\nmatter, under the *darkness of ignorance, *till the \"Great\nDay,\" which will come as always after the seventh round,\nafter the expiration of the \"Week,\" on the **S**EVENTH\n**S**ABBATH, or in the post-Manvantaric Nirvana.\n\nHow truly esoteric and consonant with the Secret Doctrine is \"**P**YMANDER\nthe Thought Divine\" of Hermes, may be inferred from its original\nand primitive translations in Latin and Greek only. On the other\nhand how disfigured it has been later on by Christians in Europe,\nis seen from the remarks and unconscious *confessions *made\nby de St. Marc, in his *Preface *and letter to the Bishop\nof Ayre, in 1578. Therein, the whole cycle of transformations\nfrom a Pantheistic and Egyptian into a mystic Roman Catholic treatise\nis given, and we see how **P**YMANDER has become\nwhat it is now.
