133. Announcement for the Year 1899
With this issue, the " Magazin für Literatur" begins its 68th year. Of a journal that accompanied the intellectual life of the educated world from the year of Goethe's death until near the turn of the century, it may well be said that it is perceived by many as a necessity. This journal has always tried to solve the tasks of a truly modern review through two characteristics: versatility and unbiasedness.
It has endeavored to achieve its versatility by not limiting itself to the treatment of fiction, but by including the entirety of modern intellectual life in the circle of its observations. The development of the individual sciences, the social currents of the present, in the latter period also the modern women's movement, art and theater life were duly followed.
The unbiasedness came to the fore in that the management of the magazine never constricted itself into one-sided school opinions, which so often lead to the misjudgment of newly emerging trends, but always sought to maintain an open, free mind for every intellectual current that emerged on the horizon of life. The director of the magazine wants to be an attentive observer and follow with a scrutinizing eye what is happening in all areas of cultural life.
The "Magazin für Literatur" will continue to pursue its goals in both directions and endeavor to do ever more justice to the task set by expanding the circle of its contributors.
