37. “Literarische Gesellschaft” in Leipzig

On [December 19], I spoke at the Leipzig "Literarische Gesellschaft" on the subject of "Goethe's world view and the present". It was important to me to show which of the driving ideas of our time were already alive in Goethe's imagination and what the relationship was between Goethe's views and those of his contemporaries.

After my lecture, Otto Julius Bierbaum read his own poems: Poems and a chapter from his latest novel ["Stilpe"]. He received a well-deserved, rich round of applause. A detailed report on this evening of the society, whose leaders contribute so much to the intellectual development of Leipzig with energy and insight, must be saved for the next issue of this journal.
