I am reproducing this essay from No. 2 [1897] of the monthly magazine “Literature”, which was newly founded by the “Times”, mainly because it shows how different the English way of expressing oneself on questions such as those dealt with above is from the German. Many of the sentences in the essay would never be written by a German writer.
