1. To the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects

Honorable Administrative Council of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects [text breaks off]

Source: Original (1 page, 1 sheet), RSA 066 On the dating: The draft is on one of two sheets of office paper that were later folded and reused for study notes on organic chemistry. The notes contain formulas and comments on various carbohydrates and cyanide compounds. Rudolf Steiner attended the corresponding course, General Chemistry, Part II: Organic Chemistry, in the summer semester of 1880.

About this fragment: In honor and memory of Carl Ritter von Ghega (1802-1860), railway engineer and builder of the Semmering Railway, the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects established the Ghega Foundation in 1869. The scholarships awarded were intended for “worthy and needy regular students of the Imperial and Royal Technical University, regardless of nationality, religion, or the department in which they are pursuing their studies. The sons of civil servants and employees of Austrian railway companies, as well as of the Imperial and Royal Private Theiss Railway Company, have the next claim.” (Program of the Imperial and Royal Technical University in Vienna for the academic year 1879/80, Vienna 1879, p. 55) Rudolf Steiner received the Ghega scholarship of 300 florins per year from May 1880 (see Wochenschrift des österr. Ingeniewr- u. Architektenvereins, May 29, 1880) until 1883. The draft letter is presumably related to scholarship matters.
