In the depths of existence, I stand with you,
Who unite my essence with yours.
I know you lift me above myself
And lead me to the sources of world creation.
But never can your presence
Reveal itself completely pure, even for a moment.
In your midst stands John always,
As he once was in his youth,
But with a gaze that is always hostile to me.
And when I look into his rigid face,
It is as if he said bitterly to me,
You may well force meaningful community upon the spirits
Meaningful fellowship with the spirits,
But the past remains effective when abandoned
Yet not defeated, it still lives in existence.
I should still work in you, demanding action;
But you have banished me from your being,
So now I must walk as a spirit being,
until your power brings me salvation.

JOHN:
O show me sublime spiritual worlds,
How I may escape this soul being,
Which I am, even though I have fled from it.

MARY:
John, listen to your friend's voice
In the spirit being, whose deceptive powers
Want to confuse your soul.

JOHN:
Mary, you are able to banish the good beings
From my circles,
When you speak humanly to my soul.
But you compel that spirit which torments me
To do nothing other than turn its activity
From the outside
To my inner being.

JOHN:
Mary, as you now stand before me,
You see me in harmony with yourself.
I may receive from you what you
Can give me at your spiritual level.
But there lives within me a being that is quite different
That once wanted to demand eagerly from you,
And this being suppressed, struggling
The desires that it only drowned out.
They may no longer live in my soul,
But they lead a dead existence within me.
I carry within me a part of my own being,
Which I should have brought into existence within me
For my full spiritual development.
The memory of a predestined fate,
From which I have escaped, remains within me.
I should have loved you, Mary,
In a human way, fulfilling my desires.
Love that sees itself rejected,
May strike the soul as terrible suffering.

JOHN:
Before me stands a world in spiritual splendor,
It has taken possession of the powers,
Which I have been allowed to develop
In the growth of my soul since my youth.
It has shown me the greatness of man
And revealed to me how he must fight with good
And also with evil elemental forces
And only by fighting can he achieve himself.
Those who experience this know no doubts,
Which often drag people into the murky depths of the soul
Those who seriously seek knowledge
And vainly direct the wings of the spirit.
I can be satisfied with the treasures of the spirit I have acquired
And know that I am alive
In the vast fields of true spiritual activity.
But when I grasp myself in this way in spirit,
I always feel, through everything that I am,
That I have been expelled from the realm of time,
And before me stands Thomasius, rejuvenated,
As he once approached Mary,
Still untouched by all spiritual striving.

Guardian of the Threshold = She cannot be released to the realm of the senses because she is bound in the spiritual to Johannes' higher self. She must find her way there.—

Now Benedictus comes — the failure on Thomasius and Capesius' side — Capesius wants to withdraw — Benedictus — Felix Balde.

HILARIUS: I see before my eyes the images of many ancient times. I must compare them with the new forces in human progress. Thoughts now mean something different than they once did. Once, peoples faced each other in armies. Today, people face each other in thoughts. And thoughts will prevail through their inner strength. But something different is unleashed by the battles of thought than was once unleashed by physical opposites.
