What this work carries
Besant's treatise compiles the modern Theosophical synthesis of pre-Christian mystery teaching: the sevenfold constitution of the human being, reincarnation and karma, the planes of nature, and the post-mortem path. It transmits, in late-Victorian English prose, the older Indian and Egyptian initiatory doctrines that Blavatsky had brought into Western circulation.
Language frame
Written in 1897 in English as a systematic exposition for the educated theosophical public, the work substitutes Sanskrit technical vocabulary (manas, kama, devachan) for the older mystery silence. The form is the modern doctrinal handbook, claiming clairvoyant verification alongside textual tradition.
Steiner’s engagement
- GA 89, 1904-05-26Steiner notes that Blavatsky obtained her teachings from a source still holding great treasures of ancient literature, but that the most important parts of this wisdom had been kept protected — situating the Theosophical transmission to which Besant belongs.
- GA 105, 1908-08-05Steiner contrasts the Theosophical recovery of ancient wisdom with the task of the present age, which must bring forth not merely an ancient wisdom but a new wisdom working prophetically and apocalyptically toward the future.
- GA 251, 1921-12-11Steiner affirms that the peoples before the Mystery of Golgotha possessed a primal wisdom that took on very different forms among the various peoples — the heritage that Theosophical works such as Besant's attempt to reconstruct.
- GA 209, 1921-12-25Steiner describes how the ancient wisdom gradually darkened, with the fourth century as a decisive turning, explaining why a modern restatement like Besant's must be supplemented by Christ-centered spiritual science.
- GA 53, 1905-02-23Steiner speaks of the secret teaching as a treasure of humanity preserved under strict secrecy and accessible only to the prepared — the context within which Besant's public exposition stands as an unusual disclosure.
Cross-tradition congruence
- Blavatsky's Secret DoctrineBesant systematizes and simplifies Blavatsky's cosmogenesis and anthropogenesis for a broader readership, with the same sevenfold human constitution and rounds-and-races scheme.
- Vedanta and SamkhyaThe sheaths (koshas) and the discrimination of subtle bodies in Indian philosophy supply the underlying structural model for Besant's account of the human principles.
