Cross-tradition

  • Jewish Kabbalah — Chokhmah / hidden wisdomKabbalistic tradition locates inexhaustible divine wisdom (Chokhmah) as hidden at the apex of the Sephirothic tree, accessible only to the initiate, structurally parallel to the Elect One's concealed wisdom in this chapter.
  • Platonic philosophy — the Forms as eternal and self-sufficientPlato's account of the Good as source of all knowing yet itself beyond knowing offers cross-tradition congruence with the Similitudes' depiction of the Elect One's wisdom as inexhaustible and not subject to worldly exhaustion.
  • Vedanta — Brahman as self-luminous and inexhaustibleAdvaita Vedanta characterises Brahman as self-luminous knowledge (svayam-prakāśa) that cannot be depleted by use, presenting cross-tradition congruence with the Elect One's inexhaustible wisdom in Chapter XLIX.

Chapter XLIX

XLIX. The Power and Wisdom of the Elect One.

CHAPTER XLIX.

l. For wisdom is poured out like water,

And glory faileth not before him for evermore.

2For he is mighty in all the secrets of righteousness,
And unrighteousness shall disappear as a shadow, And have no continuance; Because the Elect One standeth before the Lord of Spirits, And his glory is for ever and ever, And his might unto all generations. p. 68

3And in him dwells the spirit of wisdom,
And the spirit which gives insight, And the spirit of understanding and of might, And the spirit of those who have fallen asleep in righteousness.

4And he shall judge the secret things,
And none shall be able to utter a lying word before him; For he is the Elect One before the Lord of Spirits according to His good pleasure.
