Core Spiritual Science

Core Spiritual Science comprises Rudolf Steiner's foundational systematic works, in which he articulates the structure of the human being, the nature of higher worlds, the methods by which those worlds may be investigated, and the evolutionary history of humanity and the cosmos. These texts form the theoretical and practical backbone of Anthroposophy as a discipline. Central volumes include GA 9 (Theosophy), GA 10 (Knowledge of the Higher Worlds), and GA 13 (Occult Science – An Outline), each of which approaches the subject from a distinct angle: the constitution of the human being, the path of inner development, and the broad sweep of cosmic and earthly evolution respectively. Together they establish the vocabulary — etheric body, astral body, ego, Imagination, Inspiration, Intuition, Akasha Chronicle — that recurs throughout Steiner's entire output.

Recommended Reading Order

1
GA 9: Theosophy

Begin here for Steiner's systematic account of the human being's threefold and sevenfold constitution and the nature of the soul and spirit, which provides the conceptual framework for all subsequent volumes.

2
GA 10: How to Know Higher Worlds (The Way of Initiation)

Read second for the practical counterpart to GA 9: a step-by-step description of the esoteric path — preparation, enlightenment, and initiation — through which the faculties for perceiving higher worlds are developed.

3
GA 12: The Stages of Higher Knowledge

Read alongside or immediately after GA 10 for a more precise account of the four stages of higher knowledge — material, Imaginative, Inspirational, and Intuitive — and the specific inner exercises associated with each.

4
GA 13: An Outline of Esoteric Science (Occult Science)

Read next for Steiner's most comprehensive single work, covering the nature of sleep and dream, the evolution of the cosmos through the planetary stages of Saturn, Sun, Moon, and Earth, and the spiritual hierarchies guiding that process.

5
GA 11: Cosmic Memory (From the Akasha Chronicle)

Read after GA 13 as a detailed supplement on pre-Atlantean and Atlantean epochs drawn from clairvoyant research into the Akasha Chronicle, filling in the historical dimensions of the evolutionary picture outlined in GA 13.
