Wenn man solch Handgreifliches heute fühlen könnte, so würde man es schon finden. Schillers früher Tod rührte von nichts anderem her als davon, daß sein Organismus verbrannt wurde durch seine mächtige seelische Lebenskraft. Handgreiflich ist es. Ist es doch bekannt, daß, als Schiller gestorben war, man fand, daß sein Herz wie ausgedörrt in seinem Innern war. Nur durch seine mächtige Seelenkraft hielt er sich eben, solange es ging, aber diese mächtige Seelenkraft verzehrte zugleich das leibliche Leben. Bei Goethe war diese Seelenkraft noch stärker, und doch erreichte Goethe ein hohes Alter.
