Wenn der Mensch den Mond betrachtet mit den Mitteln, die ihm die Astronomie an die Hand gibt, dann weiß er: in der Zeit von Neumond zu Vollmond und von Vollmond zu Neumond sind es gewisse Gleichgewichtskonstellationen, die so walten, daß man den Mond einmal eine viertel, dann einmal eine halbe und dann eine ganze Fläche beleuchtet sieht. Was der Mensch nicht mehr fühlt, ist, daß, wenn die Konstellationen völlig andere wären, wenn der Mond nur um ein geringes seinen Standpunkt verändern würde, überhaupt solche Lebewesen wie die Menschen in ihrem physischen Körper gar nicht mehr existieren könnten. Denn vom Monde fluten die Fortpflanzungskräfte. Wenn der Mensch den Merkur anschaut, so gibt ihm sein Anstarren und Anglotzen nicht mehr die Fähigkeit, zu erkennen, daß ohne Merkur keine Verbindung zwischen Sonnen- und Mondenkräften, zwischen den Ich- und den Generationskräften stattfände. Das ist aber gegenüber der Natur, den Elementen z.B. der Fall. Der Mensch müßte aus Luft, Feuer, Wasser, Erde herausfühlen, daß sie dazu da sind, einen strafenden Ausgleich zu schaffen für die menschlichen Sünden; daß in ihnen, den Elementarkräften, «Erkränke-Kraft», «Kränkungskraft», lebt, die wir an uns müssen und sollen auswirken lassen, um uns zu läutern. Dieselben Worte sind wahr und falsch, je nachdem sie aus dem oder jenem Munde kommen. Im Munde Luzifers ist das Wort «Natur ist Sünde — Geist ist Teufel» ein Spottwort; in dem eben entwickelten Sinne, daß die materielle Natur uns um der Sünde willen strafen soll und wir den Geist in der Natur empfinden sollen als etwas uns Krankmachendes, uns Leidbringendes, ist es wahr. Denn die Schmerzen, das Leid ist das gottgegebene Mittel, den Egoismus zu erkennen und zu überwinden. Im Munde Luzifers ist das Wort «Ihr werdet sein wie Gott» eine Lüge; richtig verstanden ist es wahr. Der Christus spricht «ihr seid Götter» — Söhne der Gottheit. When humans observe the moon with the means provided by astronomy, they know that between the new moon and the full moon, certain constellations of equilibrium prevail, so that the moon appears illuminated first by a quarter, then by half, and then by its entire surface. What humans no longer feel is that if the constellations were completely different, if the moon were to change its position even slightly, living beings such as humans would no longer be able to exist in their physical bodies. For the reproductive forces flow from the moon. When humans look at Mercury, their staring and gazing no longer gives them the ability to recognize that without Mercury there would be no connection between the forces of the sun and the moon, between the forces of the ego and the forces of generation. This is necessary for the development of the individual toward freedom and independence. However, it must not be allowed to go so far that humans become insensitive to morality. This is the case, for example, in relation to nature and the elements. Human beings must feel from air, fire, water, and earth that they are there to create a punitive balance for human sins; that in them, the elemental forces, there lives a “force of sickness” and a “force of offense” which we must and should allow to affect us in order to purify ourselves. The same words are true and false, depending on whether they come from this mouth or that. In Lucifer's mouth, the words “nature is sin — spirit is devil” are a mockery; in the sense just developed, that material nature is supposed to punish us for sin and we are supposed to feel the spirit in nature as something that makes us sick and causes us suffering, they are true. For pain and suffering are the God-given means of recognizing and overcoming egoism. In Lucifer's mouth, the words “You will be like God” are a lie; correctly understood, they are true. Christ says, “You are gods” — sons of the Godhead.
