For this reason alone the path to the higher stages of knowledge and power is beset with obstacles. A firearm should not be used until sufficient experience has been gained to avoid disaster, caused by its use. A person initiated today without further ado would lack the experience which he will gain during his future incarnations before he can attain to higher knowledge in the normal course of his development. At the portal of initiation, therefore, this experience must be supplied in some other way. Thus the first instructions given to the candidate for initiation serve as a substitute for these future experiences. These are the so-called *trials*, which he has to undergo, and which constitute a normal course of inner development resulting from due application to such exercises as are described in the preceding chapters.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Initiation","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":153,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/10/c02-4/p003","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:structural_identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":null,"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["HR1960","MAC1909","RSPC1947"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/10/l03/p003","locus":"GA 10/l03/p003","anchor_mapped":true,"anchor_method":"curated","anchor_confidence":"high"},{"lang":"en","edition":"RSPC1947","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/10/c02-4/p003","paragraph_aligned":true},{"lang":"en","edition":"HR1960","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":false,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/10/l06/p003?edition=HR1960","locus":"GA 10/l06/p003","anchor_mapped":true,"anchor_method":"curated","anchor_confidence":"high"}],"german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"l03","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 10/l03/p003","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/10/l03/p003"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false,"length_check":{"de_words":147,"en_words":153,"ratio":1.04,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
