Imagine a person who never had a headache. He can say: I am not aware of the fact that I have a brain, for I have never felt it. Let us now imagine that such a headache is not produced by influences from outside, but by a certain stage of Christian Initiation which is called “the crown of thorns”. It is meant to give man the feeling: Through pain and suffering and many hindrances approach me, seeking to undermine what is most important to me, my mission—I will stand upright, though I stand alone! If someone practises these feelings for months, indeed for years, he will finally experience this feeling of headache, as if sharp points or thorns were prickling his head.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Concerning the Nature of Pain, Suffering, Joy, and Bliss","site_heading":null,"date":"1908-10-27","location":null,"word_count":153,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/107/1908-10-27/p024","alignment_confidence":"low","alignment_reason":"count_diverges","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"not_established","translator":null,"identified_edition":"Singles","book_title":"Concerning the Nature of Pain, Suffering, Joy, and Bliss","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA107/English/Singles/19081027v01.html","evidence":null,"reason":"source_says_translator_unknown","note":"The source page itself says the translator is unknown.
