It is suffering and deprivation, and it is painful when we see all that we have caused ourselves loaded onto our own soul; but we experience it in such a way that we are glad to be able to experience it, because only through it can we absorb that strength that enables us to remove those obstacles from our path. And so all these impulses that we absorb during the time of purification add up, and when we go back to the beginning of our last life, there is a mighty sum that lives in us as a tremendous urge to make up for everything in a new life, in the following stages of existence, that needs to be made up for in the sense described. Thus, at the end of the time of purification, we are endowed with the strength to develop our will in the future in such a way that compensation is made for everything wrong, ugly, and bad that we have done. This is a power of which man can get some idea if, through wise self-knowledge, he familiarizes himself with the pangs of conscience it causes him when he thinks back to what he has done to this or that person. But all this remains merely a thought in life. It becomes a mighty creative urge during the time of purification between death and a new birth. And equipped with this creative urge, the human being now enters into a new life: the actual spiritual life.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"The Human Being's Journey Through the World of the Senses, Soul and Spirit","site_heading":null,"date":"1910-03-21","location":null,"word_count":265,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/119/1910-03-21/p023","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"Singles","book_title":null,"publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA119/English/Singles/19100321p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line"},"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["English"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/119/1910-03-21/p023"},{"lang":"en","edition":"English","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/119/1910-03-21/p023","paragraph_aligned":true}],"record":{"record_type":"unknown","scope":"volume","note":"How this text was taken down (shorthand transcript, listeners' notes or manuscript) is not on record here.
