We have first of all a movement which, although in later life man scarcely performs it any more has once been carried out by him with all his might, otherwise he would remain a fourfooted creature, obliged to crawl on the ground for the rest of his life. Man has to perform the movement which changes him from a crawling to an upright child. For man is not merely an upright being in his form, he is a being who during his life *lifts himself upright*. So that the first inner movement man performs—for it is an inner movement—is the movement of lifting himself into the upright position.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture IX","site_heading":"Lucifer, Venus, and the Planetary Spirits in Initiation","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator.
