We see the Buddha gathering around him his faithful pupils. What do we perceive in the souls of these disciples? What will they eventually come to believe? That all the striving of the human soul must be directed toward becoming free from the yearning for rebirth, free from the inclination toward sense existence, free to seek the perfecting of the self by freeing it from everything that binds it to sense existence, and connecting it with all that links it to its divine spiritual origin. Such were the feelings that lived in the disciples of the Buddha. They sought to free themselves from all the temptations of life and let their only link with the world be the perception of the soul shining into the spiritual that is experienced in compassion; to become absorbed in striving for spiritual perfection, free from all earthly wants, with the aim of having as little as possible to do with what binds the external man to earthly existence. In this mood the pupils of the Buddha wandered through the world, and it was in this manner that they glimpsed the aims and objectives of Buddhist discipleship.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture IV","site_heading":"Buddha and Socrates: Polar Streams of Human Evolution","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. So wandelten diese Buddha-Schüler durch die Welt, so erblickten sie den Zweck und das Ziel ihrer Buddha-Schülerschaft.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":187,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/139/1912-09-18/p007"}],"english":["GA 139/1912-09-18/p006"],"method":"length","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":187,"en_words":221,"ratio":1.18,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":1.11,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":7140,"original_word_count":6430,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Conrad Mainzer","identified_edition":"AP1986","book_title":"The Gospel of St. Mark","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA139/English/AP1986/19120918p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
