At the end of that span of time a child becomes capable of linking its impressions of the outer world to the ideas of its ego. It is true that this coherent ego- conception can only be reckoned as existing as far back as memory extends. Yet we must say that virtually memory extends to the beginning of the fourth year, only it is too weak at the beginning of distinct ego-consciousness to be perceptible. It may be granted that those higher powers which dispose of a human being in the early years of childhood can be operative for three years; therefore man, during the present middle period of the earth, is so organized that he can receive these forces for *only* three years.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture I","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":166,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/15/l01/p022?edition=ASGB1921","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:length","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":null,"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["AP1992","ASGB1921"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/15/l01/p022"},{"lang":"en","edition":"AP1992","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/15/l01/p022","paragraph_aligned":true},{"lang":"en","edition":"ASGB1921","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":false,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/15/l01/p022?edition=ASGB1921","paragraph_aligned":true}],"german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"l01","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 15/l01/p016","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/15/l01/p016"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false,"length_check":{"de_words":147,"en_words":166,"ratio":1.13,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
