The impetus, the inclination to incarnate here or there, in this or that family, in this or that people, at this or that time, depends on how the person was organically connected with the cosmos before birth. In former times, in that territory where the German tongue was spoken, a specially apt expression was used to indicate a person's entrance into the world through birth. When a person was born, people said that in such and such a place he had “become young” ( *junggeworden*). Therein lies an unconscious reference to the fact that man in the time between death and a new birth continues at first to be subject to the powers which had made him old in a previous incarnation, but that before birth there come iii their place such forces as again make him “young.” Thus Goethe in “Faust” still uses the expression “to become young in Nebelland.”—Nebelland being the old name for mediaeval Germany.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture III","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":194,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/15/l03/p012?edition=ASGB1921","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:length","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":null,"edition_coverage":{"de":["original"],"en":["AP1992","ASGB1921"]},"available_versions":[{"lang":"de","edition":"original","edition_basis":null,"is_original":true,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/15/l03/p012"},{"lang":"en","edition":"AP1992","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":true,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/15/l03/p012","paragraph_aligned":true},{"lang":"en","edition":"ASGB1921","edition_basis":null,"is_original":false,"is_default_edition":false,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/15/l03/p012?edition=ASGB1921","paragraph_aligned":true}],"german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"l03","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 15/l03/p014","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/15/l03/p014"},{"locus":"GA 15/l03/p015","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/15/l03/p015"}],"bead_confidence":"high","pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false,"length_check":{"de_words":175,"en_words":194,"ratio":1.11,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
