People new to anthroposophical thinking, feeling, and perception may think we should not worry about the life of the spirit, about the spiritual world, since we enter the spiritual world anyway after death (even a materialist might say this) and will there learn all we need to know about it. Why should we not be satisfied in this life between birth and death simply to do what is necessary for life in the physical world; why is it wrong when we just fulfill our duties in the physical world, and leave matters concerning the spiritual world in the realm of the uncertain and indefinite? One could hear these words often during the time when the tide of materialism engulfed human development, especially in the last third of the nineteenth century. And it was by no means the most morally reprehensible souls who said: While on earth, let us concentrate on our tasks here and leave the rest for the world we enter after death.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"3. Jahrhunderts die Menschen werden wissen müssen über die Natur des Schlafes, damit wollen wir heute beginnen.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":388,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/154/1914-05-05/p005"}],"english":["GA 154/1914-05-05/p004","GA 154/1914-05-05/p005"],"method":"length","confidence":"medium","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":388,"en_words":351,"ratio":0.9,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.85,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":6516,"original_word_count":7668,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Christian von Arnim","identified_edition":"AP1990","book_title":"The Presence of the Dead on the Spiritual Path","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA154/English/AP1990/19140505p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
