As we know, people today are haunted by a fear we can compare with the medieval fear of ghosts. It is the fear of germs. Objectively, both states of fear are the same. Both fit their respective age: People of the Middle Ages held a certain belief in the spiritual world; therefore quite naturally they had a fear of spiritual beings. The modern age has lost this belief in the spiritual world; it believes in material things. It therefore has a fear of material beings, be they ever so small. Objectively speaking, the greatest difference we might find between the two periods is that ghosts are at any rate sizable and respectable. The tiny germs, on the other hand, are nothing much to write home about as far as frightening people is concerned. Now of course I do not mean to imply by this that we should encourage germs, and that it is good to have as many as possible. That is certainly not the implication. Still, germs certainly exist and ghosts existed also, especially as far as those people who held a real belief in the spiritual world are concerned. Thus, they do not even differ in terms of reality.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"3. Für diejenigen, die an die geistige Welt wirklich glauben konnten, ist nicht einmal in bezug auf Realität ein Unterschied in dieser Beziehung.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":236,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/154/1914-05-05/p008"}],"english":["GA 154/1914-05-05/p012"],"method":"length","confidence":"medium","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":236,"en_words":209,"ratio":0.89,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.85,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":6516,"original_word_count":7668,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Christian von Arnim","identified_edition":"AP1990","book_title":"The Presence of the Dead on the Spiritual Path","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA154/English/AP1990/19140505p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
