In the final years of his life, he suffered much. I would like to tell here, parenthetically as it were, a wonderful story from his last years as his wife told it to me.[^3] During his great suffering, our friend fought not against admitting to himself that he had to suffer, but against saying that he was ill. He was not ill, he said. He suffered, yes, but he was not ill, and he was adamant that such a statement should not be taken as quibbling but as something meaningful. This definition, “I suffer, but I am not ill,” arose from his awareness that what he carried within him as spiritual science, what supported and carried him inwardly, defeated all attacks of illness. He was aware that he suffered, but the health of his soul is so great that, when he compared it to his physical condition, he could not call himself ill. This definition is very important and well-suited to permeate our soul as a feeling.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"3. Es ist etwas ungeheuer Bedeutungsvolles, etwas, was so recht geeignet ist, als Empfindung die menschliche Seele zu durchdringen.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":233,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/154/1914-05-05/p020"}],"english":["GA 154/1914-05-05/p025"],"method":"length","confidence":"medium","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":233,"en_words":196,"ratio":0.84,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.85,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":6516,"original_word_count":7668,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Christian von Arnim","identified_edition":"AP1990","book_title":"The Presence of the Dead on the Spiritual Path","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA154/English/AP1990/19140505p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
