What we call the I of the human being really merges into the astral body, just as the red nuance of the color spectrum merges into the orange nuance. We must only realize once and for all what we are actually talking about when we speak of the human ego. We speak of the human ego, and we must of course be quite clear about the fact that the actual essence of the ego is outside of everything that can be observed as the physical human body. The ego experiences itself only in inner experiences. As is well known, the etheric body and the astral body are not experienced directly at all. Rather, the physical body is experienced through external observation, through external perception, and the I in its manifold experiences is experienced in an internal way. This is absolutely the case for experiences on the physical plane. Between the physical body and the I within stand the astral body and the etheric body; both belong to such facts of the event, we can say, that are not directly experienced by the human being on the physical plane. Neither can the etheric body be directly observed externally without prior esoteric training, nor can the astral body be experienced. It contains everything that is often called the sum of subconscious or unconscious mental experience.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Second Lecture","site_heading":"The Four Members and Cosmic-Astral Correspondences","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. Er enthält alles dasjenige, was man oftmals auch die Summe des unterbewußten oder unbewußten seelischen Erlebens nennt.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":216,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/156/1914-12-13/p005"}],"english":["GA 156/1914-12-13/p005"],"method":"length","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":216,"en_words":243,"ratio":1.12,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":1.05,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":5971,"original_word_count":5709,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"How Does One Enter the World of Ideas?","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA156/English/SOL2024/19141213p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
