How much of it do we possess so long as we are active solely on the physical plane? If we investigate further, we have, to begin with, nothing of this *I* within the physical world except will, acts of will. All we can do is will. The fact that we are able to will makes us aware of being an *I*. Sleep happens to be a dimming of our will; for reasons we have often discussed we cannot exert our will during sleep. The will is then dimmed. We do not will during sleep. Thus what is expressed in the word *I* is a true act of will, and the mental picture we have of the *I* is a reflection that arises when our will impinges on our body. This impact is just like looking into the mirror and seeing our physical body. Thus we see our own *I* as an expression of will through its effect on the body. This gives us our mental image of the *I*. Therefore, on the physical plane the *I* lives as an act of will.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture V","site_heading":"The I, Will, and Human Evolution's Spiritual Crisis","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. Das Ich lebt also auf dem physischen Plane als ein Willensakt.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":189,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/166/1916-02-08/p007"}],"english":["GA 166/1916-02-08/p007"],"method":"length","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":189,"en_words":188,"ratio":0.99,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.98,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":9740,"original_word_count":9892,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Pauline Wehrle","identified_edition":"AP1988","book_title":"Necessity and Freedom","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA166/English/AP1988/19160208p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
