By the Middle Ages of course these were only the last remnants of an ancient perception. Even in the tenth century, though, people did not look into a person's eyes like we do today when we simply see the physical eyes. When they looked at other people's eyes, they still saw something of the aura, the etheric. They had a way of seeing uprightness or falsehood in the eyes, not through any kind of external judgment but through direct perception of the aura around the eyes. It was also like this with other things.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture V","site_heading":"The I, Will, and Human Evolution's Spiritual Crisis","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. Und so mit anderem.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":243,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/166/1916-02-08/p010"}],"english":["GA 166/1916-02-08/p010","GA 166/1916-02-08/p011"],"method":"length","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":243,"en_words":245,"ratio":1.01,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.98,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":9740,"original_word_count":9892,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Pauline Wehrle","identified_edition":"AP1988","book_title":"Necessity and Freedom","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA166/English/AP1988/19160208p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
