In the last lecture I made it clear that I have the highest regard for Franz Brentano, not least because he did, through his study of Aristotle, develop subtlety of thinking up to a point. As I said he could not accept spiritual science. This was due to many things, but principally it was because he still lacked the necessary mobility of thinking to penetrate to the spiritual aspect of things. One must at least strive to attain it. When people read my *Theosophy* or the second part of *Occult Science*, one can often discover from what emerges just why their thinking stumbles.[^12][^13] The same can be said in regard to Brentano. I would indeed have found it incomprehensible that a sensitive and astute thinker like Brentano should be unable to find the way, had I not succeeded in discovering an exact instance that reveals just where the difficulty lies. There are others, of course, but let me give you an example.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture VI","site_heading":"The I Across Incarnations: Thought, Will, and Hidden Connections","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. Und, man kann ihn an vielen Stellen abfassen, aber ich will eine solche Sache anführen.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":392,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/176/1917-07-10/p032"}],"english":["GA 176/1917-07-10/p040","GA 176/1917-07-10/p041"],"method":"length","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":392,"en_words":377,"ratio":0.96,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.92,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":8241,"original_word_count":8922,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Rita Stebbing","identified_edition":"AP1987","book_title":"Aspects of Human Evolution","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA176/English/AP1987/19170710p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
