Such an individual goes on to say that ordinary consciousness only dreams through its destiny; ordinary consciousness endures its destiny without understanding it, just as one endures a dream. A misfortune may not have its source at all in the previous life. It may arise spontaneously and have its consequences only in the life to follow and also in the life between earthly lives. We can see again and again that out of misfortune, out of pain and suffering, emerges a consciousness of a very different form in the spiritual world, Meaning enters the whole of our life, however, when we learn to understand our destiny, which otherwise we only dream our way through.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":127,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/178/1917-11-15/p057","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"1917-11-15","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 178/1917-11-15/p040","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/178/1917-11-15/p040"}],"bead_confidence":"high","length_check":{"de_words":117,"en_words":127,"ratio":1.09,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German.
