When a developmental process has reached a certain climax, equilibrium sets in. Human beings, for example, develop until the greatest possible harmony between their inner abilities and the external nature has been achieved. However, such a state of equilibrium cannot last; external forces will approach it destructively. Development must be followed by the descending process of dissolution; what has been drawn together expands again; the cosmic becomes chaos once more. The process of development can begin anew. Spencer thus sees a rhythmic interplay of movement in the world process.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"The World as an Illusion","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":93,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/18a/volume_ii_the_world_as_an_illusion/p042","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:length","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"Worldviews in the 19th Century","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Books/GA018a/English/SOL2024/GA018a0204.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
