Man is, of course, aware that he inwardly accompanies with his thinking the life that makes an impression on him from there or from over there. This thinking — one lives in it. But one should also become aware that the greater part of life is filled with the fact that this thinking is permeated by all kinds of dream-like elements. Most people are not aware of how much of their thinking is an involuntary element. All involuntary thinking is basically of a dream-like nature. Try to realize, in a superficial self-knowledge, how far you direct your thoughts from the center of your will in everyday life. Try to realize how far you have the aspiration to direct thoughts inwardly, to shape thoughts yourself. Try to realize to what extent it is the case that the soul lets thoughts come, lets them break in. They give themselves up to it, the thoughts, one weaving itself together with the other, and man comfortably surrenders himself to this involuntary play of thoughts. There is no great difference between this everyday play of thoughts and between the dreams that dawn from sleep.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Seventh Lecture","site_heading":"Overcoming Materialism Through Spiritual Renewal and Cosmic Understanding","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. Es ist kein großer Unterschied zwischen diesem alltäglichen Gedankenspiel und zwischen dem aus dem Schlafe heraus aufdämmernden Träumen.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":210,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/196/1920-01-30/p009"}],"english":["GA 196/1920-01-30/p009"],"method":"identity","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":210,"en_words":204,"ratio":0.97,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"verified","verified":true,"evidence":["length","meaning","audit"]},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":1.02,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":4990,"original_word_count":4879,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"Spiritual and Social Changes in the Development of Humanity","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA196/English/SOL2024/19200130p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
