For us the light is outside, phantomlike. Nor could the Greeks any longer see in the sun the actual source of Life; they felt that the sun was something that pervaded them inwardly. They felt the element in which the sun lives within the human being as the element of Eros—the element of Love. Thus: the sun as the divine source of *Love*. Eros—the sun-nature within the human being—this was what the Greek experienced. Then, from about the fourth century A.D. onwards, came the time when, fundamentally speaking, the sun was no longer regarded as anything but a physical orb in space, when the sun was darkened for man. To the ancient Persians the sun was the actual reflector of the *Light* weaving through space. To the Egyptians and Chaldeans the sun was the *Life* surging and pulsating through the universe. The Greeks felt the sun as that which infused *Love* into the living organism, guiding Eros through the waves of sentient existence.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"The Sun-Mystery in the Course of Human History","site_heading":null,"date":"1921-11-06","location":null,"word_count":182,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/208/1921-11-06/p026","alignment_confidence":"low","alignment_reason":"no_original_to_compare","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"not_established","translator":null,"identified_edition":"Singles","book_title":"Cosmosophy Vol. II","publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA208/English/Singles/19211106p01.html","evidence":null,"reason":"no_translator_named","note":"Neither the lecture's own page nor rsarchive's lecture list names a translator for it.
