In theory the matter seems simple. But in fact the quest for harmony, between seeing the spirit in external nature and guiding the soul upwards to the spiritual world out of which Christ Jesus had descended, was an immense struggle. Christianity came over from Asia and took hold of the Greek and Roman world. In the later centuries of the Middle Ages we see the struggle taking place most strongly in those parts of Europe, which had retained much of their primeval vitality. In ancient Greece the old heathen element was so strong that although Christianity passed through Greek culture and assimilated many Greek expressions on the way, it could not take root there. Only Gnosis, the spiritual view of Christianity, was able to take root in Greece.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Lecture IX","site_heading":"Dead Thoughts and Living Spirit: The Mystery of Golgotha's Answer","site_heading_note":"A heading the site wrote for this unit from a summary of it; not in the edition, and not the words of Rudolf Steiner or of the translator. Nur die Gnosis, die geistige Anschauung vom Christentum, hat in Griechenland noch Wurzel fassen können.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":199,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/210/1922-02-18/p023"}],"english":["GA 210/1922-02-18/p024"],"method":"length","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":199,"en_words":175,"ratio":0.88,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"proposed","verified":false},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":0.99,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":5123,"original_word_count":5160,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Johanna Collis","identified_edition":"RSP1991","book_title":"Old and New Methods of Initiation","publisher":"Rudolf Steiner Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA210/English/RSP1991/19220218p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
