Such questions reached only as far as the Sun and the answers came back from the Moon. When the ancient initiates wished to address questions to Mars, they were obliged to do it by composing aphoristic sayings, recitatives, mantrams, which could also be declaimed. These, sent out into the universe, were the means whereby the Mars-forces were activated in such a way that the answers to the questions, coming back from Venus, were audible to a kind of inner hearing.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":138,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/213/1922-06-30/p020","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"1922-06-30","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 213/1922-06-30/p022","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/213/1922-06-30/p022"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","length_check":{"de_words":293,"en_words":268,"ratio":0.91,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German. Questions addressed to Saturn entailed very special difficulty, for actions lasting over a lengthy period of time were necessary before they could even be put as questions. In the ancient Mysteries this was as a rule arranged in such a way that the teachers in the Mysteries gave their pupils a certain mission to fulfil, a mission in which the life of the pupil was dedicated to some actual achievement. What it was incumbent upon these pupils to accomplish, often extending over a period of many years, constituted the questions put to the Saturn-existence.
