The first philosophical pedant is Aristotle, the great and universal spirit.[^1] It will surprise you that I give him these two appellations, one after the other, but we do not understand Aristotle unless we see in him the first philosophical pedant and at the same time the universal spirit. He is great in a certain aspect but he is in another aspect the first pedant philosopher, for he made *out of words* categories of thought. It would never have occurred to the Greek of an *older* time to take words and force them, as it were, to yield categories of thought; he still felt the words as something that is *inspired into* man, still felt the presence of higher Spirits in speech and language.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"The Recovery of the Living Source of Speech","site_heading":null,"date":"1923-04-13","location":null,"word_count":161,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/224/1923-04-13/p015","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:length","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"not_established","translator":null,"identified_edition":"Singles","book_title":null,"publisher":null,"publisher_inferred":false,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA224/English/Singles/19230413p01.html","evidence":null,"reason":"no_translator_named","note":"Neither the lecture's own page nor rsarchive's lecture list names a translator for it.
