Whether sleeping is long or short when we fall asleep does not matter, because the time relations are completely different for the other state of consciousness. So whether you sleep for a long night or a few minutes, the characteristic I give is the same for both types of sleep. When a person measures the time between falling asleep and waking up, they relive what they experienced in the physical world between the last time they woke up and the time they fell asleep. They relive this in a different form, and they experience it as follows: While in our daytime consciousness we experience life more with physical nuances and with feelings about the physical nuances, the sequence of events from beginning to end, each individual event or circumstance as they follow one another, in physical intellectual nuances, in sleep we experience all this again, but with moral nuances. This is where moral and religious impulses live, where we experience things in such a way that we evaluate each event according to how valuable or worthless it makes us as human beings. We could not indulge in any illusions about this if we were consciously going through it, about what significance it has whether we have accomplished this or that, because we evaluate the events of the day in relation to our humanity.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Our Thought Life in Sleep and Wakefulness and in the Afterlife","site_heading":null,"date":"1923-06-21","location":null,"word_count":242,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/224/1923-06-21/p014","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"The Human Soul in its Connection with Divine-Spiritual Individualities","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA224/English/SOL2024/19230621p01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
