Thoughts such as these can make *only* what is physical and material into the object of their knowledge, for they themselves are only *real* in the physical and material body of man. Materialism did not originate because material beings and processes alone can be perceived in external Nature, but because man had to pass through a stage in his development which led him to a consciousness at first only capable of seeing material manifestations. The one-sided development of this necessity in human evolution resulted in the modern view of Nature.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":120,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/26/l03/p021","german_anchor":{"de_prefix":"l09","de_passages":[{"locus":"GA 26/l09/p023","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/26/l09/p023"},{"locus":"GA 26/l09/p024","url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/26/l09/p024"}],"bead_confidence":"medium","pairing_state":"verified","verified":true,"evidence":["length","reader"],"reader_german":["GA 26/l09/p023","GA 26/l09/p024"],"length_check":{"de_words":106,"en_words":120,"ratio":1.13,"partial":false},"correspondence":"established","note":"English passage numbering is edition-relative, so the same number need not name the same paragraph in the German. At a third stage he experienced the Thoughts in the etheric body; here they manifest only an inner stirring, like an echo of the quality of soul.
