Esoteric Lesson

This passage is not Rudolf Steiner — the editor. This passage is an editor's footnote or endnote ([^n]: marker), NOT lecture text. Any Steiner words inside it are the editor's report of a variant or shorthand and must not be quoted as the lecture.
Record: listeners' notes. Written from listeners' notes, summaries, or memory rather than a shorthand transcript. The wording is the note-taker's as much as Steiner's: weigh a single striking phrase here far more cautiously than the same phrase in a stenographic volume, and do not rest an argument on one word. Evidence: «Gedächtnisaufzeichnungen von Teilnehmern» (Participants' records written from memory). Rudolf Steiner Verlag Gesamtverzeichnis 2022, volume subtitle. The translation is the maintainer's, not a published one.

[^1]: This refers to the evening review of the day's events in reverse order, from back to front. Only in this way can people improve their memory. In the last four to five centuries, memory has declined enormously, and this will be even more so in the future if people do not seize the opportunities now available to improve it. The time is particularly favorable for these opportunities now, and later they will simply no longer be there. Memory will then become something other than merely waiting for things to emerge from a dark background. It will be like groping for the past, like sending out feelers that grasp at the past as if it were something real. The time is now particularly favorable for this development and for esoteric development in general.
