As always, I would like to say a few words before this eurythmic performance, not to explain eurythmy as such — artistic expression must have an immediate effect; it would not be artistic if it needed explanation. But eurythmy involves artistic forms and a mode of artistic expression that are still unfamiliar today and therefore need to be discussed. What is presented here as an attempt at eurythmy should not be confused with the art of dance, nor should it be confused with any kind of mimicry or pantomime. Not that there is anything wrong with these arts, but because eurythmy aims to be something completely different. It offers the audience moving human beings, individual moving human beings or groups of moving human beings. But what appears there as movement, my dear audience, is not arbitrary gestures, it is not merely a sign, a symbol for what is being represented in parallel with it, for the musical or the recitative and declamatory, but eurythmy is in fact also drawn out of the whole human organism, only in a conscious way, just as the vocal or linguistic element in the human being is drawn out of this organism unconsciously.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Eurythmy Performance","site_heading":null,"date":"1923-04-08","location":null,"word_count":201,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/277d/1923-04-08/p004","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2025","book_title":"The Origin and Development of Eurythmy 1923–1925","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA277d/English/SOL2025/19230408e01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
