If we look back to that Saturn development, where man was still without etheric body, astral body and I - insofar as they were independent beings -, we get the best difference of those ancient conditions from today's by referring to the “consciousness”. A state of consciousness is connected with every state of development. There are seven states of consciousness. The present human being is in the fourth; no being can have this state that cannot say “I” to itself. Therefore, the human being developed the form of consciousness that he now has only on earth. The purpose of evolution on Earth is to develop the waking consciousness. On the earlier planetary conditions, there were only imperfect states of consciousness for humans. On Saturn, the human ancestor in his primitive form had a consciousness like that of minerals, or rather: the human physical ancestor is that consciousness. We can hardly find words for it easily; we can only hint at it. Es ist mit jedem Entwickelungszustand ein Bewußtseinszustand verbunden. Es gibt sieben Bewußtseinszustände. Der gegenwärtige Mensch ist im vierten; diesen kann kein Wesen haben, das nicht zu sich «Ich» sagen kann. Daher entwickelte der Mensch die Form des Bewußtseins, die er jetzt hat, erst auf der Erde. Die Erdentwickelung hat den Sinn, das wache Tagbewußtsein zu entwickeln. Auf den früheren Planetenzuständen gab es für den Menschen nur unvollkommene Bewußtseinszustände. Auf dem Saturn hatte der menschliche Vorfahr in seiner primitiven Gestalt ein Bewußtsein, wie es auch die Mineralien haben, oder vielmehr: der menschliche physische Vorfahr ist jenes Bewußtsein. Wir können dafür kaum leicht Worte finden; wir können nur andeuten.
