In distant prehistoric times, the human being on earth did not yet have what is called an individual soul. In those days, what was present in him was what animals, which are still at an earlier stage of human development, still have today: the group soul. When, through imaginative clairvoyance, human group souls are traced on the astral plane in retrospect to prehistoric times, it becomes clear that the various forms of these can be traced back to four basic types. And these are represented in the four apocalyptic animals of the second seal: the lion, the bull, the eagle and that figure which also approaches the individual soul of the present man as the group soul and which is therefore also called: the “human being”. This touches on the truth of what is often so dryly allegorized in the four animals.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Images of Occult Seals and Columns","site_heading":null,"date":"1907-10-21","location":null,"word_count":161,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/284/1907-10-21/p009","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"Images of Occult Seals and Columns","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA284/English/SOL2024/19071021c01.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
