Up there, a few branches remain with a small kerchief, a piece of candy, or maybe a small bottle of wine, and the boys have to climb their way up to that little tree attached to the top of the pole from which the bark has been removed. The victor is the boy who brings it down. That very strongly connects the activity of the will to the nature of the body. We do this same thing artificially with a climbing pole. It is certainly better when the children have to learn how to climb a rope. The pole has a rather limited significance in gymnastics, I would say, but I do not want to completely remove it. With the parallel and high bars, with the horse and so forth, if they are properly used, you can certainly gain something from them.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Forty-Eighth Meeting","site_heading":null,"date":"1923-03-01","location":null,"word_count":179,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/300b/1923-03-01/p021","alignment_confidence":"low","alignment_reason":"count_diverges","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Ruth Pusch and Gertrude Teutsch","identified_edition":"AP1998","book_title":"Faculty Meetings with Rudolf Steiner II","publisher":"Anthroposophic Press","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA300b/English/AP1998/19230301d01.html","evidence":"lecture_list_row","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
