It only means something to the one who accepts a picture of the spiritual. But they were no longer able to do that; so now they argued. Some said: On the altar in the church, the bread really does change into the body of Christ. The others did not believe this, because they could not imagine that the bread, which looked exactly the same afterwards as it did before, had become flesh. They could not understand this. And so those medieval disputes arose, which led to such terrible results. For those who said: It is all the same to us whether people understand the matter or not, we believe that the bread is real flesh – that was the one party that became Roman Catholics. The others said: We cannot believe that, but at most what happens can have the meaning, the symbolic meaning. – Those were the ones from whom Protestantism then arose.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Concepts of Christ in Ancient and Modern Times","site_heading":null,"date":"1924-03-26","location":null,"word_count":213,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/353/1924-03-26/p016","alignment_confidence":"high","alignment_reason":"beads:identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"Human History and the World Views of Civilized Nations","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA353/English/SOL2024/19240326p02.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page. - Das waren diejenigen, aus denen dann das Evangelische geworden ist.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"word_count":215,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/de/ga/353/1924-03-26/p016"}],"english":["GA 353/1924-03-26/p016"],"method":"identity","confidence":"high","correspondence":"established","length_check":{"de_words":215,"en_words":213,"ratio":0.99,"partial":false},"pairing_state":"verified","verified":true,"evidence":["length","meaning","audit"]},"witness_completeness":{"ratio":1.0,"band":"comparable","note":null,"word_count":4564,"original_word_count":4583,"may_be_abridged":false},"witness_quality":{"translator":{"scope":"unit","status":"recorded","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":"Human History and the World Views of Civilized Nations","publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Lectures/GA353/English/SOL2024/19240326p02.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
