Ordinary consciousness confuses this desire with the I itself. One must lift oneself out of the body with a mental jolt in order to satisfy the desire that the body creates in the spirit. The body is inconceivable without the spirit, for it is only the manifestation of the desire for the spirit. — Those who understand the body correctly develop the ability to experience the spirit as a matter of course. Scientific materialism arises from a lack of knowledge of the material world. — A lack of knowledge of the human body leads to the assumption that the body summarizes its experiences in the word “I”; it only summarizes its desire in this word. Understanding of the bodily basis of the “I” transforms itself through itself into understanding of the spiritual nature of the “I”. The sense of self that the body develops is the revelation of selfless devotion to the spiritual world, which reveals the true character of the “I”.","text_trust":"verbatim","quote_safe":true,"title":"Psychological Aphorisms","site_heading":null,"date":null,"location":null,"word_count":185,"url":"https://anthroposophy.ai/v1/steiner/en/ga/36/18_psychological_aphorisms/p004","alignment_confidence":"medium","alignment_reason":"beads:structural_identity","two_voice_volume":false,"translation_credit":{"scope":"unit","status":"established","translator":"Steiner Online Library","identified_edition":"SOL2024","book_title":null,"publisher":"Steiner Online Library","publisher_inferred":true,"match_score":1.0,"source_url":"https://www.rsarchive.org/Articles/GA036/English/SOL2024/18_Psychological_Aphorisms.html","evidence":"lecture_page_line","publisher_note":"The publisher is inferred from the edition code in this lecture's source URL, not stated by the source page.
